Tentacle Flower

Uploaded: December 04, 2010

Description

One of the Orbea species. Orbea is a leafless succulent (as can be seen in the background). You do not want to get too close to these flowers as the normal pollinators are flies (we all know what attracts flies). It is really interesting (and a little eery) to watch the hairs on the edge of the flowers (termed vibratile hairs) that move in response to movement in the proximity, presumably it aids in attracting the flies.

Exif: F Number: 5.6, Exposure Bias Value: 0.00, ExposureTime: 1/30 seconds, Flash: did not fire, compulsory flash mode, ISO: 200, White balance: Auto white balance, FocalLength: 73.00 mm, Model: Canon EOS 40D

Oh my gosh, what an unusual flower! Actually quite pretty -- love the red -- most likely the flies do, too. Fabulous detail, Randy! #9080554
