Hanging Out

Description

Corn snake also known as a red rat snake. Corn snakes got their name both from the pattern on their belly, which looks like Indian corn, and from old southern farmers who stored their harvested corn in wooden buildings called cribs. Rats and mice were attracted to the cribs to feed on the corn, and corn snakes were attracted to the cribs to feed on the rodents, much to the delight and appreciation of the farmers. People unfamiliar with snakes sometimes kill these because they resemble a copperhead. See how this snake has round eyes? That is a clue that he is non-poisionous. Poisonous snakes have vertically elliptical pupils (cat's eyes).

LOL Renee, this snake was really tiny and just looks big here because of my macro lens. I had my 70-300mm which will focus as close as 3 ft using manual focus. So I was at least that far away. He had bitten a man earlier and I heard him talking about it so that is how I became aware of him. The man wasn't worried because he said they were tiny little tooth marks. I don't want to get bitten particularly, even if the snake is non-poisionous. But I am not really scared of snakes if I know they are not poisionous. That's the hard part though because I am not that familiar with them.

Thank you both Renee and Michelle for your kind comments! #8872379

Thank you Jeff and Sabrina! Jeff, my mom could never manage her fear enough to photograph one! She doesn't even want me to send her this photo! LOL

I am adding another photo of this snake so you can see the belly, which does have a pattern similar to Indian corn. This was shot with my regular 40-150mm. I wanted to get more detail so I quickly changed lens. #8872904
