Back Breaking Work

Uploaded: August 26, 2010

Description

When we moved to Maine in 1988 we knew nothing about Potato Harvest. Amusing for me now that I am married to a Potato Farmer. I have learned a lot from my husband.
Here is a Golden Oldie taken in 1989.
My daughter, Sarah on the left picking potatoes the old fashioned way. Picking potatoes has nearly disappeared in northern Maine. Only three or four potato farms still pick their crops by hand, out of about 280 total farms, according to the Maine Potato Board; the rest harvest with machines.

I remember your potato harvest series a couple of years back, Roxanne. A fascinating look at the "old-fashioned" type of farming that is rapidly being replaced by modern machinery.
This photo is so eye-catching because of the stretched horizontal composition. Actually, it's a perfect way to display the kids stretching their backs and arms. #1302023

I thought it was hard enough to dig them up in the family garden years ago (and we are talking golden ages ago) LOL. I don't know but what a little of the old fashion way wouldn't be bad, it is heather I think. #8863344

I think none of you want to go back to the "Good old days" when it comes to potato harvesting!! #8863646

Roxanne, I love the tones , clarity & mood of this older photo! I did this every fall growing up. We had a very large family & it was a necessity! Looking bac, it was hard work but we did not think that at the time. I would still love to spend a day doing this! Reminds me of my mom & dad who has since passed. Everything is temporary....love the crop & was captivated by this lovely, lovely image! #8863763
