Description

A garden spills from the rooftop of City Hall in Chicago. Green roofs are designed to mitigate the 'heat island' effect, manage rainwater run-off and moderate indoor temperatures. This roof, designed by William McDonough, had to be reinforced to handle the added weight even though in some areas the soil is only 4 inches deep.
