Painted Hills of Oregon
Uploaded: August 16, 2010
The Painted Hills created from volcanic ash 30 million years ago and turning into clay has no vegetation growing on it. The clay is so absorbent that water can never penetrate more than a few inches into the clay and the rest of the water just runs off. The surface when dry breaks up into small pieces called claystones.
