The Billings Biter
Uploaded: August 06, 2010
Actually this is a saddleback moth caterpillar. We named it the Billings Biter before we knew what it was. I took this macro shot after my attempts at weeding my garden were interrupted by a burning sting on my hand and then on my knee. Found two of these on my irises. They're about 3rd instar -- about 3/4" long. The spines are hollow and filled with venom which feels much like a bee sting. My pain and irritation is gone but some have reported irritation and pain that lasts for days. I find the creature oddly beautiful -- at a distance!

Thanks again. They really are fascinating. There isn't much info out there on them, though I did read that much isn't known cuz no one wants to handle them! #8810815Sign up for an interactive online photography course to get critiques on your photos.
