Another shot of the Cheltenham Badlands in southern Ontario. “Badlands” is a geologic term for an area of soft rock devoid of vegetation and soil cover that has become molded into a rolling landscape of rounded hills and gullies. Such areas are rare in Ontario and this is one of the best examples. They are formed from Queenston Shale. It is the presence of iron oxide in the shale that accounts for the red colour. The narrow greenish bands that can be seen throughout the shale are due to the change of red iron oxide (iron III) to green iron oxide (iron II) brought on by the circulating groundwater. The relatively soft shale is essentially clay and easily eroded by water.

Thanks Carol, Patrick, and Rony for taking the time to stop by and for those wonderful comments! Have never been to the SD Badlands, Carol, but this area is certainly unusual looking. #8770527Kathy Salerni July 17, 2010
Wow, Rona, I am originally from Western NY and having traveled throughout Ontario, I had never heard of these "badlands" before! Beautiful composition, textures, rich colors and light! Fantastic! #8770669Rona L. Schwarz July 18, 2010
Thanks Kathy! Not surprising, it's a very small area in size probably about an hour or so from Toronto. #8771505Steve M. Harrington July 18, 2010
A fine image, Rona. I just posted one of the area. It does look very much like the SD badlands but on a small scale.Renata Gusciora July 18, 2010
