This looks like the image was created with creative instincts in mind after the capture, rather than simply a snapped shutter. To me, it looks like much masking took place and darkening to lighten certain wanted areas of the image.

Thanks so much everyone! I have been AWOL from commenting all week because I am recovering from a difficult surgery. I hope to be strong enough to log some computer time soon to look at all of your galleries and comment. the original color of this image won a finalist last September and did not advance further. I converted with Nik Silver Efex Pro and did final tweaking in the targeted adjustment tool in the grayscale tab in Lightoom. I added a touch of Topaz adjust, and masked it out of most of the image. That was the only masking done. I am uploading the color version here. #8745187

Oh, yes, And for those who have asked, This was taken at 85 MM with a 24-105L lens on a 5D MarkII, f/8 at 1/1600 sec and iso 200. The owners of the Triple X ranch, the only working ranch in a National Park, were kind enough to let us photograph when they were driving the trail horses from the ranch to the night pasture. There were big fires going on in Yellowstone, and what looks like dust is actually a mixture of smoke and dust. We were standing in the brush right next to the trail the horses were running on and a woman wrangler was bringing up the rear. I also posted a photo of her with her dog in September and I am uploading it here. #8745197
