Photography Question
Manish Issar

type of lens

i am a newbie in SLR photography. I want to purchse a second lens. what do you guys suggest as a second lens; a wide angle, macro or a telephoto lens. currently I am using a 28-80mm canon EF lens that came with my Rebel K2. I tend to take close ups more frequently than the landscapes.
please suggest something soon as I need to make a decision soon.
secondly should I go for canon or tamron. is Tamron compatible with canon EF mounts?
thanks with appreciation

This TOTALLY depends on what you like to shoot! Do you like to shoot macros the most? Landscapes? Portraits? A combination of several different subjects? Let us know what you like.

I have the 20D. My favorite all purpose lens (note: I said "favorite" not "best" or "highest quality") is a Tamron 28-300. It's my favorite because it takes nice pictures (not the "best" in all subjects, just all all around nice and sharp photos) and it's LIGHT and serves many purposes. This lens isn't a pro lens, but it is an excellent travel lens suitable for many purposes. Tamron is also releasing an 18-200mm lens that has good preliminary reports. I'll probably purchase that for my "tote around" lens to take shots from landscapes to wildlife. My tamron works flawlessly on my camera--a 20D. I have other lenses that are much more expensive and specialized for specific purposes. It depends on what I'm planning to shoot.

So I guess what I'm saying is it all depends on your needs. Do you want to go pro? Do you just want to be a serious ameteur? What type of photos do you like to take?

Let us know and we'll make recommendations!

Manish Issar   hi karma
i actually want to be a serious amateur. I actually like doing close ups and especially want to learn taking stunning pictures of close ups (especially nature) like people post on this website. right now I dont see myself going to take landscapes and if I have to the noraml 28-80 mm lens wont be too bad. what do u suggest.
i dont want to spend too much on the price ($ 200 modest price).
thanks for the response

Something that I think about when buying lenses and determining lenses isn't just what the normal use might be. A wide angle lens isn't just for landscapes but also interiors or group shots. Say you have a family event and they want a group shot...Also, if you get a longer lens, that can help you get close and fill the frame with something but it will also give a different angle of view to far away things. The lens that you have now is probably pretty good for wide angle though, at 28mm. You might look into a longer zoom lens though, since you like to get "close ups". Maybe something like 75-300mm? Go to a camera shop and ask them if you can try out various zoom lenses and ask them what they think about them.
