I Need Professional-Quality Enlargements I live in Ohio and am trying to start my own photography business, but I need to know where to send my film to get that professional look to it. Wal-Mart and Meijers just don't do it. I've used Clark in the past but they're not that great. Any suggestions on where to send my film would be helpful!

Hello, Brianne. Although I don't live in Ohio I wanted to mention to you not to be afraid when you go to the lab - that if you are not happy with the processing to tell them you want a redo. Be sure that your exposures, etc., are not to blame first. But if you are sure it isn't that, feel free to tell them what you expect. Let them know what you are doing with the prints and normally these places will work with you to obtain a finish you are happy with. You are correct with Wal-Mart-style processing (not that there is anything wrong with them for regular stuff), but you don't go to a builder to get your car fixed - if you know what I mean. I would suggest to go and visit some of the labs and chat with them ... maybe even bring in a sample of the quality you expect, prefer or whatever. Also remember that depending on your film, exposure, lighting, subject and all that good stuff, sometimes a lab can only do so much. (I'm not saying you don't shoot well :-)Hope it helps, and be brave! :-)

I live in Hilliard and I go to Cord Camera. They have professional proofs and whatever you'll need. I have been going there for over a year and never have had a bad print or they have never messed up my order. You can also get a photoclub membership and save everytime you get prints. Costs about 20 dollars but well worth it if you start using them every week or so like me. Hope this helps Candy

I live in Michigan and I use a Lab in Michigan City, Indiana called Customation. I went through the same learning experience that you have with the small labs and they just can't get the good quality. I have had great results with good quality and reasonable rates.Check out their website for more information; www.customationinc.com Good Luck and Keep Taking Pictures! Christina Newfer

Brianne...I completely agree with Debbie F. Buckeye Color Lab in N. Canton Ohio is one of the finest labs in the country. Both film and digital work is suberb. Their customer service dept is outstanding. They will also be happy to give you a tour of their very large facility. Call and ask for Darryl Shinaberry (head of customer service) she can answer all your questions.I have been using Buckeye for years, and have never been disappointed in the quality. Gary Burdette

My wife and I have recently started up a photography studio and we like the Louisville Color Lab (if you happen to be in South West Ohio, they may be close). Even though we are a new studio, the owner and a sales rep sat down with us and spent about half a day outlining their services. They also printed up some of our files on the spot to show us what they can do. If you are interested, check out www.louisvillecolorlab.com for contact information (not much info there). Ask for Tom.

I don't know if your work is digital or film, but if it's digital, you might try an all-digital lab that I found recently - White House Custom Color. They are so eager to show the quality of their work that they will send you up to 5 8x10 size shots of your work, so you can make sure that the calibration of your monitor matches that of their lab. I found their work to be superb, and very reasonably priced. Check out www.whcc.com Light and laughter to you!

Your best answer is a custom lab, where you can actually talk to the person who makes your prints. Check the yellow pages of your phone book. It may not be a custom lab, but if you have a Costco nearby, they do beautiful enlargements (professional quality) inexpensively. It wouldn't hurt to give them a try on one or two prints. Another option is to send your film by mail to a professional lab like Dale Laboratories, or one of many you can find advertised in the finer photo magazines. Good luck with your business.

If you have a Ritz Camera or Wolfe Camera in you area, they do a good job, the prints are numbered on the back, you can join their club and get 2nd sets for free, and if you have the prints done with a matte finish they really look good. Also, if you have any questions, the people that work in the stores all do their own photography too, so they can give you some good tips. The cost is not too bad, and unless it's B&W, the film stays in house. (Less chance for it to get lost)

If you want the very best, use a Lab that uses a Noritsu printer with software from kodak. Alot of new minilabs are having problems with magenta cast, especially with digital. GO WITH BUCKEYE!

Hi Brianne! I don't know where about in Ohio you are, but I would suggest TPI Custom Photo Lab located in Youngstown, Ohio. The quality is excellent and they specialize in weddings, senior portraits and people photography in general. You can send them your work and they can send it back to you, if you do not live around the area. They use all Kodak products and they are folks who actually know what they are doing. You can check out the website at www.tpiphoto.com for more info. Best of luck to you!

Brianne, you have recieved alot of good advise of which I can not add anything except that I would call your local paper, the big one, and ask where there is a professional photography store. While you are there ask them who would they recommend. I hope this works as I have been in strange towns and done this and it has been of help. I hope this helps you and anyone else out. Be safe and keep shooting. Lou Estes

Hi Brianne, I live in Millersport, OH. The Cord in Heath does an ok job with developing of film but I haven't been too impressed with copies or the enlargements I have gotten back. I have since outsourced all of my film work to Dale Laboratories www.dalelabs.com and have yet to be disappointed with their work. If you're going to shoot digital, there are a number of labs that do great work with enlargements 11x14 and greater. If you want more detailed info you can contact me at ttheodore@avolve.net and I'll be happy to give you more info.
