Telephoto Lens for Nikon D1H

I have a Nikon D1H and want to get a telephoto lens. (I have the 24-85mm.) I want to be able to take pictures of figure skaters, so I need one that takes action. Also, they skate indoors, so the lighting is awful and I can't use flashes during the competitions. I don't want one of the huge lenses- the lighter the better. The camera itself is heavy enought! What do you suggest?

With a digital SLR, you get the bonus of a 1.4x factor, giving you more telephoto than the focal length of the lens. You might consider a 70-200 zoom in the widest aperture you can afford. The skater might be close in at times, but on the other side of the rink for other shots. Tokina ATX lenses have a decent reputation. Check keh.com for used ones.

This is a difficult thing to capture. I can offer help by giving you information on my own experience.

I shoot a Cabaret type show every year. With dancers and singers almost constantly moving it is hard to capture. Originally I tried using my 28-80 f3.5-5.6. Out of 300+ pictures, maybe 50 were ok.

I then purchased a 50mm F1.8 lens and shot for the 2 more nights of the show. Almost every shot was a keeper. You need an extremely fast lens and also try upping the ISO as each ISO higher will add 1 increase in speed.

You can see on my site http://www.pbase.com/mkaplan/cabaret_2003 the quality of shots I got with that lens. The first batch were at ISO400 and the last ones were ISO800. With the Canon 10D all came out quite good.

The 50mm x the 16 'multiplication factor' makes it an 80mm and is also a very inexpensive lens as most 50mm lenses are. You can also get something a little longer like maybe a 105mm but try to get as open a lens as possible.

Good luck.

The best lens for you in that situation is an 80-200 f2.8. It might be a little heavy but it will get you the shots. For a fixed lens a 105 f2.5 or an 85 f1.8 will work, you just have to be close to the action. The problem when using telephotos in low light situations is you have to have a shutter speed fast enough to freeze action (125-250 of a second)In low light situations like you described I use 1600 ASA, then I usually have to us levels (NOT BRIGHTNESS) in photoshop to lighten the whole image. I shoot night sports doing exactly as I described.
