Hannah, This is subject to local laws and ordinances. Basically, if you charge others for making photographs, you are operating a business and must have all the business and tax permits/licenses, etc. that any other business requires.I've never heard of any "special" license required specifically for photography . . . just the normal business things common to every other business. If you begin operating a studio in your home, you must also be aware of local zoning ordinances which may, or may not, allow operating a business of that type where you live. Again, depending on local laws/ordinances, this may require a "special use permit" if the neighborhood is zoned for residential use. Caveat: This is just some general advice to get you started. It's not intended to be comprehensive. Inquire with your city clerk's office, your county clerk's office and your city, county and state tax offices, and don't forget about your city/county Chamber of Commerce. They are often helpful with more detailed information.
