Photography Question

Looking for the right one

I bought a canon G2 and returned the camera when I found out a week later that the G3 was coming. Then I started thinking about a canon D60. The truth is that I don't know anything about photography and I am afraid that spending $2000 plus more on lenses would be too much for a beginner. The problem is that when I started playing with the G2 I couldn't control the camera. I wanted to control the camera manually to get the right focus but was never happy with the results. I want to go all the way with taking photograghs and make the best out of it. But should I spend so much money on the D60 or just get the g3 and try to get the best out of that camera. I was frustated with the lens from the G2 cause it was so limited to take nice pictures. I coudn't get closer enough to faces without using the digital zoom and then it wasn't as sharp as I wanted them to be
thanks
Diamil

As I understand it the G2 has the ability to be controlled manally. Also there are lens adapters available for it to increase it's telephoto, wide angle, and macro capabilities. I know a pro who owns one and really likes it. The D60 is also a fine camera. The advantage of it is that you can use the complete line of Canon lenses. Canon just announced a new DSLR for next year that is 11 megapixels so I would say that D60's may be coming down in price within the next year. Another option is to find a used D30.

Thanks jeff for answering my question. I would like to know in case I buy the canon D60, what lens should be my first option? Due to the fact that I am just a beginer which of the canon lenses would help me cover the basics and be the warrior of a thousand battles before I can save some money to buy other lenses
Thanks

The most versatile lens I own is the 28-70 f2.8 L series lens. It is very sharp and has macro capabilities. With the 1.6 multiplication factor of the D60 it ends up being a 45-110 (approximately) zoom which makes it a nice lens for portraits. With digital it is even more important than with film to make sure you use the best glass you can. That's another reason I suggest the L series Canon lens.

Yes, Canon G2 is a high rated good digital camera. But there is another option for good quality, and better zoom. It is also a Japanese brand but less famous than Canon - Fujifilm Finepix S602, it comes with 6 million pixel, super CCD, 6x optical zoom for only 700 US dollar.

I don't know much about the Fuji, but Raphael C. was mistaken about the resolution. It's a 3.1 megapixel, not 6.

While the Fuji is 3.1 megapixel it's images are interpolated to around 6MP. Is it the same quality as a true 6MP camera? no, but it is close to what you get from 4, 5, and 6MP cameras. At least from what I've read and the studio pictures I've seen posted comparing it with higher MP cameras.

I played around with both the G3 and the D60 in the local camera shop. The D60 feels amazing and the expansion options are quite numerous and I want one BAD. I chose however to buy the G3 for a couple reasons all basically relating to cost.

However if there wasn't a focal multiplier on the D60 I would have bought it over the G3, but I wasn't about to spend $8,000 on the 1Ds or $5,000 on the soon to be released Kodak to have no focal multiplier.

To me the G3 is the best compromise between Manual Control, Build Quality, Image Quality, Expandability, and Cost for the time being. Hopefully in about 2-3 years the technology in the 1Ds and the new Kodak will come down to an affordable level (~$2,500). Until then I'll be satisfied with the G3 for $750.
