Thanks Mary - sent you the article Thanks Bob - I'm actually a trained entomologist so have had the opportunity to photograph a lot of insects. Didn't do much of it last year but hope to do more this spring and summer.

Just opened your file. Amazing that you can put so much time into this text to so openly share with others. Thank you sir! As I am searching the house for the perftect glass/vase, I am wondering how much abstract effect a glass that is cut w/design on the bottom would work. As in a Waterford glass. It is cut like a star on the bottom. Seems like it would be interesting. I also have a ball head for my tripod. Not sure if I can get my camera to go parralel on the tripod. Thank you all for your comments. Mary ... please let me know how your glass works out? I have tried a vase with a "cracked-look" bottom, but did not like the results. I am experimenting now with putting air bubbles inside the oil droplets and will resend my article to everyone after that experiment is done.

Olive oil on water is quite interesting. for one assignment (liquidity) I added some food coloring, just a drop or two at a time and then swirled. The results were amazing, especially when a little olive oil was added. Shine a light on it (even a flashlight) and the possibilities are endless. Bruce

Hi Robert, well this looked like it was going to be much easier than it is. I tried it. I used fabric for bg color. my canon 100mm macro picked up the grain in the fabric. I used an office type spot light on porch with daylite. all I got was a big blur. I will practice again. after trying this I have much more respect for your quality images. I'll keep you posted.

Mary ... due to the textures in some fabrics, you may need to place the fabric further away from the surface of the water. Also, be sure if you are using daylight that you have a fast enough shutter speed to stop any movement in the water. If there is any movement at all, I would highly recommend using a flash.

Hi Robert, I just came in from the porch from trying again. better but not quite there yet. I am using my canon 580 exII flash. I have found that too long of shutter spd when I use f22. I actually put it on auto. (yikes! never shoot auto). but it gave me a fast shutter. not sure what the issue is with the long shutter spd. I was using iso 100. spot metering. I tried the olive oil, then the avon sss. the skin so soft seems to all form in one slick where the olive oil keeps its bubbles. I'm going back to read your settings again.

Mary ... using F22 may be the reason you are seeing all the texture in the fabric. As long as your camera lens is parallel to the surface of the water, you only need F8-F11.

Upon trying your technique many times and not coming up with great results, I decided to go outside the box. This is an image from my oil & water attempts. I added flood filter, then flexify filter along with running it thru many topaz filters. I am partial to abstracts so I kind of like it. Hope the color is coming to you as I see it. reminds me of a sunset/moonset over the gulf. This was kind of like making lemonade out of a lemon. ;). I will keep trying to get good results with just the oil drops. Thanks for inspiring me to do something!
