Upgrade to Canon D7: Which Lens?

Hi All,
I am currently using a Canon D50 with a Canon 28-135 USM IS lens as a walk-around zoom. I am planning to change from the D50 to D7, though I am not sure whether to use the same lens or change to a 24-70 f2.8 or a Sigma 28-70 f2.8 - or should I continue with the old lens? Need your help on this! Thanks.

Hi Gagan, The 28-135 is a lens of very old design. The 24-70mm is one of the best zooms Canon makes. If the price is in your budget, you will be thrilled with it. The 24-105mm is pretty decent too.
28mm is not very wide angle with the D7. (24mm is wider but still not very wide unless you get the EOS 5D II). That's why most people get a zoom with a shorter focal length too, like the 10-22mm ultrawide.

I don't get this. Surely if you own the camera you must know that it is called a 50D, not a D50 (it's not a Nikon).
And the 7D is not called a D7.

What lens you need depends on what you shoot and want to use it for. Without knowing what you want to use it for it is impossible to give a good recommendation. The 24-70 is excellent but it is a big, heavy and expensive. The 24-105 F4 is probably better as a walkaround lens if that is what you are looking for.

  Gagan,
I use a Canon 40D, with the Canon EF-S 17-85 USM IS as my walkaround lens. If it had been available when I bought, I would have spent a bit more and picked up the Canon 15-85. If you need a larger aperture, the EF-S 17-55 2.8 would give you decent wide angle with short telephoto. If all goes well, I will sell my 17-85 and pick up the 15-85 and a 7D. I think that they would make a great combination for still and video.

Always invest in the best glass you can afford. In this case, I wouldn't worry so much about the camera, but use your cash to get the better Canon lens.

  Guys,

Thanks and sorry for the typing errors on the camera models.
I would want to let you know that the Canon lenses are a bit too expensive in India and I can though get a good deal on the Sigma lenses.
If any one is using a Sigma Lens could you give me a feedback on those OR what is your view of the 24-105 USM L F4 from Canon.

Thanks

Gagan

I use the 24-105mm Canon lens for the majority of my photos...it's perfect for walk-around!

I also use the Canon 24-105 mm f4L (low dispersion glass) lens for my walk around lens, even though I do not have an expensive 7D. I bought it for my 20D because it's lighter weight than the 24-70mm f2.8L lens and always focuses where the photographer (rather than the lens) wants. And, BTW, I started out with the 28-135 mm lens, also. But, the beauty of Canon's sharp images is the lenses, not the camera. I put my limited funds in the best lenses I can afford.
