Differences in photos between windows/adobe I have been working on a project involving 11 portraits. The shots were taken RAW with Nikon D300 and 70-300 VR lens. They were brought into Lightroom 3 with final touches through Professional Portrait and Elements 9. I sent these to be printed from an online source. They came back horrible. It was not only the white issue involving the monitor, it was also completely different colors. This was from a familiar printing source with no prior problems. I started all over again with monitor calibration as well as the software programs mentioned. This time I was going to take them to a local Wal-Mart as I was running out of time. I noticed the files in windows from my flash drive as being darker, screwed up colors (heavy influence on red), and adjustments made in editing, resaving, and then looking at them in windows did not display the kind of adjustments I had made. What causes a jpg - edited as stated - show so differently in windows? Other photos I have made using this technique did not show this disparity. Monitor is Dell U2410 and calibration is Spyder2Express.

Check the color profile of the jpg images. You should probably use sRGB for outside print services. Windows doesn't recognize other profiles, so it will probably look different than in Lightroom or Photoshop if you don't covert to sRGB. That would be my guess at what's going on.

So, is it possible that an abundance of 'editing' of photos would then show up in Windows with exposure and color issues? The understanding is that all editing would be done in Lightroom and/or Elements.

I find your question confusing. Windows is an operating system. After you finish processing your photos do you put them in a folder that is with other photo folders? If so then all the photos will be seen on your computer with the Elements9 software. Windows only lets Lightroom and any other editing and processing to be able to do their job. Why would you even consider taking your photos to Wally World? They are not exactly known for high quality within their stores and you expect them to do quality work for you? Your All-in One printer will give you better photos. Try Mpix. Follow their guidelines for sending them your images. Being that they are already in sRGB and .jpg you are halfway there. Allow them to enhance your photos as necessary. They may be pricier than WM but you get what you pay for.

Ted, Are you still having trouble with this? The trend to red suggests a problem with the way the srgb is applied to the photos - the rendering intent. Kevin

The confusion has much to do with trying to explain a series of events in a clear and yet concise manner. This all got started when I began to have trouble with color on a calibrated monitor. It turns out the video board was bad and I replaced it. However, I bought a new monitor as well. The lack of calibration caused horrendous colors when I got back - from MPIX by the way - the prints. I began trying to figure out what was wrong. The photos described were fine (after calibration) in PSE9. However, because I was going to take them to Wal-Mart to print I placed them on a flash drive. (I had run out of time and only had a few hours to do this.) I checked the flash drive in Windows to see the files were there. The Windows default viewer showed those files completely askew: color, exposure, brightness, etc. I know there is some difference to be expected - but not this much. I have tried to find out the answer at several venues and it seems the answer is very difficult to determine. One article I read suggests that in processing files the collection of profile information is possible (that is if I understood what I read). (Kevin I think this is at least partially what you are talking about.) I have never had trouble with MPIX before. As this is so complicated and I have assurances of what exactly I need to do in the future, I am going to leave it at that and chalk it up to one of those oddities. I told one person, I am old enough I am getting tired of learning so many new things - especially when it doesn't seem as though there is a good answer.

Ted, Yes, this could well be a one-time event associated with the change of video card and monitor. So follow the assurances you got and see how it comes out. If still a problem, give a try here again. I do suggest a practice run before a deadline looms. Your first sentence gets to the heart of the matter. I think you did a reasonable job of it. In a forum setting though, it may take a couple of rounds of clarifying questions from helpers to get the problem straight in our minds. So the good answers are there but it can take a bit of effort to get at them. Best of luck to you,

In reading Kevin's latest response, I am concerned about coming across impatient with the responses I have received. If that is the case, please accept my apologies. I had no intent on being impatient. In fact, based upon what I have read so far this issue might have been better not to have tried to fix via a forum question. I'm not sure about that.
