Which file would you save? Just came back from a weeklong trip and bracketed nearly all photos so I ended up with a mixture of properly exposed shots, as well as some slightly underexposed and some slightly overexposed. Which file is best to keep, the under or overexposed? I would prefer to delete all but one file of each scene. Thanks!

Hi Sharon, Unless you are really hurting on disk space, I would keep them for a while or until you know for sure that you are not going to edit them via HDR imaging. Otherwise, I would just keep the best exposed one of the set and by best exposed, that doesn't necessarily mean what the camera metering says, what does your eyes say. I sometimes prefer a bit under-exposed image as I can recover highlights easier if there are drastic/contrasting light in the image. my .02

I agree. I took two terrific classes, in which one instructor taught masking and another a technique with the gradient tool that allowed me to blend light to dark. What looked to be a throw away, ended up a finalist. I recommend taking Doug Steakley's Basic Masks and Lewis Kemper's Tool Kit #1, as both really helped me.

Thanks, Bunny! I am afraid I can not afford courses so have to muddle along on my own. I am familar with masking and the gradient as well as doing two or more edits of the same RAW file and combining them. I nearly always shoot at least two exposures so I will have a properly exposed sky if the exposure for the landscape causes details in the sky to blow out. Since this trip was important to me I bracketed up to 5 exposures which left me with way too many files. Just trying to keep storage manageable.

Another instructor recommended a second external hard drive on which to increase storage space. Instructor Richard Lynch gave guidance on this issue. Go to:

I 2nd Sharons recommendation for Lewis Kempers Toolbox classes - they are in depth & complete. I also 2nd the idea of getting more hard drives. I have 4 active hard drives (most are 1TB). I have older images on 2 different drives and use 2 drives for my current photos as 1 drive mirrors the other as a backup. I have been using the Iomega 1TB firewire hard drives and have not had a single problem. Here is an older review I posted on Amazon - Iomega 1TB review Cheers, Carlton

Thanks, Carlton! I do have 3 external drives and I am considering backing up to Carbonite as well. Just haven't made the big decision yet.
