Raw Photos - Update Your Adobe Software When they buy new cameras, many people find that Photoshop or Elements do not support the new camera's RAW file format. But, Photoshop CS4 .... and Elements 6, 7 and 8 can be easily updated. Then, they do support nearly all cameras' RAW formats. (**Older versions of the Adobe software cannot be updated.**) Here's where you can get the update for Adobe Camera Raw. Hi Peter, I am just disgusted with Adobe right now. I just bought a new Canon 5D Mark II yesterday and CS3 wont open the files. I dont want to upgrade to CS4 and I dont want to pay $200 for the upgrade and it saddens me that after all the years of buying & using Adobe Photoshop along with all the books, classes here at BP and DVDs & money I have spent, I am now looking for another editing software. I think that if Adobe cant support the newer cameras with their products, they should provide the necessary upgrade to accommodate their customers at no cost. I would love to hear some feedback, opinions, options about this. Thank you, Carlton Right now I am using the Canon software to open & edit my raw files.

OK - I apparantly was using the WRONG dmg converter and now have the 5.6 installed and its working... but I am still not a happy camper with Adobe right now. I'm sure I'll get over it eventually but I will also be looking at other options as well :) Carlton

Well Carlton, I have never used the DNG approach but I guess it works. (I have CS4 and Lightroom and Elements 7.) But after testing several RAW converters, I am less and less happy with the quality I get from the Adobe products. I get much better quality with the Nikon software (when using a Nikon camera). The Nikon pro Capture NX2 is also fast and versatile, much more so than Canon Photo Pro OR the free software that Nikon provides (View NX). And overall, my favorite converter is the PhaseOne Capture One 5 but it is far, far more complicated than Adobe. And of course, it is expensive too. I'm new to this so bare with me. I've always been told no question is a stupid question...so here goes. How do I know what my RAW file format is? I have a Canon Rebel Xti; I take most of my pictures in RAW format and I use Elements 7 to process them.

Chris: Your camera can shoot in JPEG format which is suitable for any software. If you set it for RAW capture, the file name suffix will be CR2 A RAW file is just raw data that is not processed until you do so in software that can read the CR2 file. OMG, Carlton thanks for this! Major freakout today with my 5D. Didn't know what was going on. So I've never deone the DNG before. Always worked from the CR2 and converted in Camera Raw. If I convert the CR2 to the DNG I'm not losing quality am I? If I take the DNG to Camera Raw is it the same as taking the CR2 to Camera Raw?

The problem is actually with the camera manufacturers and not Adobe. Seems Nikon and Canon are always playing the game with software, even though they are not in the software business. They refuse to provide Adobe the information to read their own digital RAW formats when they upgrade equipment. Adobe needs to decode and apply it to photoshop and lightroom, or provide the download via the net. I normally upload my Nikon raw files through the Nikon software if I plan to use CNX during editing.

Kimberly, I wish Canon, Nikon, Hasselblad, etc.. would use a standard format like DNG and just do away with CR2, NEF files. There is no degradation of the files converted and they open in ACR like any other raw file. It would make everything simpler & cheaper which is why they wont do this. Hi Thomas, sorry but it is Adobe's problem. If CS4 can read the files, they should know how to create an update for CS3. I agree that Canon could supply the line coding to Adobe for Adobe's upgrades but they already do this when they provide their initial release for a new product. I upgraded to CS5 because I like the recent selections, auto-fill & other enhancements they have made but I am keeping my DNG converter because in another year or 2 I will probably need it again.
