Digital SLR: Previewing Scene on LCD?

Why can't I preview the scene on the LCD before I press the shutter on a Digital SLR? Sorry, I am new to this. Thanks :)

With an SLR, the sensor is behind both a shutter screen and a mirror that directs the light from the lens to the viewfinder. So there is no live view possible on the LCD screen. You view live through the viewfinder. When you fully press the shutter button, the mirror flips up so that the light is then directed to the sensor. The shutter opens to allow the light to hit the sensor for the amount of time specified by the shutter speed, then closes and the mirror drops back into place.

So, basically, on an SLR, you are looking directly through the lens.

All above are correct.... however an EVF (electronic viewfinder) which only simulates an SLR will give you continuous viewing in your viewfinder.

Most newer digital cameras come with a choice to view through the lens or through the LCD screen. There is a button that you press to go between the two. Look up in your manual to find that button. Otherwise, tell us what kind of camera you have and maybe we can help you further. Cheryl

OOPS. I didn't realize Magda said DSLR as opposed to digital camera. Mia Culpa. First and last time I'll ever post to this site. That's for sure!

Don't let it bother you Cheryl. If I ever make a mistake in a post I will be able to accept it but then I mever nake mistakes. LOL

BTW, I can't preview the scene on either of my cameras - an Olympus OM-2n and a Pentax 645N. Why is that?
