Photography Question

Janet Fikar

What Imaging Software to Buy?

Are there any reviews about the various digital image-editing software out there? Is it Photoshop hands down, or are there other software that should be considered? If I purchase Photoshop, do I need the full-blown version? Is there other software that is not quite as expensive? What are the pros and cons for what's available? What's good and what's better?

Janet, for me, Photoshop was a "hands down" decision, and I've never looked back. Sure, there are other photo post-editing softwares available. However, Adobe Photoshop has led the pack since its origination, and is arguably the industry standard. I have used the full version for several years, beginning with 5.5, and now owning CS. At $99, it would be hard to find a better application than Photoshop Elements 3.0. And 3.0 does have most of the photo-editing tools available in CS2. I've always strived for quality products, believing that "quality" is far more economical in the long run. I'm pleased with what I can do in CS, and have the assurance that I can always buy a specialized plug-in if necessary.

I started off buying Elements 2 and found it very intimidating as a "first software program." I switched to Digital Image Pro as a starter and got comfortable with all of it's features. From there I went back to Adobe, but it was at the 7.0 level, have worked my way up and "I believe." Thomas Knoll must be some kind of God -- it is an awesome program and I thank all the Photoshop developers down at Adobe.

A good lower priced alternative is Paint Shop Pro. It was formerly owned by Jasc and now Corel has recently purchased it. It has received good reviews from Popular Photography and Imaging Mag. I had this first before PS and it has a lot of very similar features.

I especially like one of their noise reduction filters called "edge preserving smooth." One key thing it doesn't have is a good levels control that shows the histogram adjustment. It has something similar, but I don't like it as well. I actually still print from this application as I like the page set up feature and it has templates for sizes like 8x10, 2- 5x7 on a page, 8 wallet size on a page, etc. I do all of my editing in PS now but I don't like to print from there.

I think the price is under $150.

google has a free program.. I never used it or seen it but I have heard some say its really good for free. you can try it and see if its for you. I use PS/CS2 and love it but there is a steep learning curve and youll never learn it all.... unless you are really really bored...lol

You can't go past PHOTOSHOP. Buy it, forget the rest. You will not regret it. I have been using it for years and years and years professionally.

Photoshop is the absolute top of the mountain. It is the industry standard in image editing. With that said however, it can be daunting if you're just beginning. I am a graphic artist/photographer so I have been using photoshop for years, but when I first got started I was a little overwhelmed. To buy the totally legit copy of PS it costs a lot of $, if you are just starting buy Photoshop Elements. It is just a watered down version of Photoshop and it has a lot of the same features. You probably won't miss the features that it doens't have because they are more advanced anyway. Good luck!

I am a Graphic Designer and Photographer. Taking away Photoshop would be like cutting of your legs. Nothing else can compare. It is by far the most important thing to happen to digital editing ever. I believe if you are serious about what you do, then buy it. Forget the cost. It's worth every penny. Anything else is a watered down compromise.
