Wedding Photographers: What Do They Charge?

I've heard they charge anywhere from $1000 to $3000 (in their pocket) for a day's shoot. I saw a wedding package the other day for $20,000 (included 50th anniversary shoot).

The amount a wedding photographer charges does not all go in his/her pocket. There is the cost of the film, developing, printing, proof books, albums, etc. - not to mention the cost of the equipment, gas, etc. The charge varies according to the area of the country and the experience and skill of the photographer.

Dear Savy, if I charged $1000 for a day's shoot, assuming printing of proofs and a finished leather album, my profit would be about $100 for 25 hours of work. That 25 hours includes 10-12 hours on the wedding day, time with the bride & groom before the wedding, driving to the lab numerous times for even one wedding, numbering, sorting, putting the proofs in the proof book, dust-spotting, re-touching, designing the album, putting it together, and meeting with the bride & groom before and after the wedding. Would you be willing to spend $10,000 on equipment and years of schooling and training to make $4 an hour? The "more expensive" photographers you mentioned have better equipment, not the cheap stuff I have, and they are highly sought after. That's why they can charge so much.
I didn't realize the costs either until I became a photographer.

Need an efficiency counselor if it's $900 out-cost each time you do a wedding.

Sorry, it isn't $900 cost each time; I just didn't want to write too much. It depends on what kind of package the bride & groom want. I have packages for $550 and $850 also, but these are more limited than my $1300 package, and the albums have fewer pages and are not leather, and the wall-size portrait is smaller. Thanks for allowing me to clarify.
