83 .  Image Protection with Better Photo
I am very upset about this. I have, via my own mother, discovered that my images can be copied and downloaded off of my Deluxe website, without my permission. Granted, they are downloaded at a resolution of 72, but I don't want them downloaded AT ALL! I tried it on another person's website and sure enough, I downloaded their photo. At first, I get this message I can't do it, but I click "ok" and then it gives me the box asking me where I want to download the image. I am NOT happy, and this will be enough for me to leave Better Photo if this problem is not resolved. I just emailed BetterPhoto on this, but I am quite upset right now. Any input/response will be appreciated.

This can happen on any site, Christine. People will always find a way to copy images. The only real solution is not to put your photos on the internet.

9/9/2009 8:12:32 PM

  Hi Christine,
No matter what any site does, you will never be able to stop anyone from doing a screen capture and there are no sites in existence that can stop this. I put my 2009 CW stamp on all my images that are posted online.
Better Photo tries to discourage theft and they are concerned about this as we all are but there are always new software & OS systems that will find ways around it.
As Jessica stated, the ONLY way to ensure you will not have an image stolen is to not post it online.
From what I read the other day, the new Windoze 7 has built saving images into their OS software to make it even easier for image theft.
This has happened before and will always continue to be a problem. What we can do to help each other is to point out when we find someone who has stolen images and post their theft on the forums.
I know this is not what you want to hear but it is the ways things are. Better Photo making right-click disabled is akin to having a lock on a door, it will keep the honest people out but a determined thief will find a way to pick the lock.
Many photographers do not post their images online for this very reason, I choose to just use small images & include my copyright info on the images.
The other alternative is to use password protected galleries which I use for weddings and albums specifically made for a customer but since I want to have most of my images seen and prints bought, I keep my work open/viewable to the public.
Blessings,
Carlton

It used to be that when you clicked OK there was no box asking where to save the image. Has something changed on BP?

I just did a test and found that the box appears if you use Firefox but not with IE8.

So, it's not anything to do with BP but it is a browser issue.

Exactly Marianne. That was what I had liked about BP before is that you could not copy the images. Now you can, as you describe above. I've since pulled several images from my website and if they go back up, it will be with significant watermarks, which isn't exactly attractive.

In doing a LOT of research yesterday, there are websites that prevent downloading. My favorite was when you right clicked on the photo, the only thing that downloaded was their watermark!

Better Photo.....is there anything you can do to fix this problem??

I went to IE8, and had no problem downloading an image from a BetterPhoto gallery. I didn't even get the little box reminding me that the image was copyrighted.

9/11/2009 2:06:20 PM

  Hi Christine,
Which site did you find "when you right clicked on the photo, the only thing that downloaded was their watermark" ?
Thank you,
Carlton

There is a way that's said you can do so that when somebody right clicks an image, all they'll get is the watermark. I have it in an old magazine.
There are other ways to prevent the right click. Flash sites are one, and how you write the code is another that I've heard you can do.
But however the image is shown on a screen, if it's up on the screen, I can get a copy of with screen captures.
So there are hurdles. You can even hide copyright symbols and messages in the html code. But a big watermark is probably still the best thing to do if you're worried about saving and reprinting somewhere. Because if somebody wants to save and only keep it on their computer just to look at, a watermark won't make them not do it. But if somebody wants to copy and put it up someplace else and pass it off as their own, like has been done before, a watermark has a good chance of making them not choose your photos.

  Christine,

I wasn't saying you couldn't download a photo in IE8, just that the option box to do it doesn't appear after you click OK, like it does in Firefox.

Firefox just makes it easier.

Oh, I guess I misread your email.

I think the downloading ability has something to do with Java, not that I understand anything about Java other than I want my morning cup of it each day!

Never mind. It seems that some images can be downloaded and some not. I wonder why some can and some cannot?

9/14/2009 12:26:01 PM

Have you e-mailed Amy and asked her about this ? amy@betterphoto.com
I like my websites here as well and just recently renewed for another 2 years. I am happy with Better Photo and like mentioned earlier, there are NO sites that can stop a screen capture so there are no sites that can completely protect any images from being copied.

I have emailed Amy and got a response similar to what you have said. I have found some photographic websites that prevent copying, other than a screen shot. Hey, if someone wants a screen shot, go for it, as not much can be done with that! To go with a website where photos can't be downloaded, I'd probably have to have a web builder and I'm not sure how much I want to spend to do that. I'm staying with BP for now. I may watermark my images. I did my first art show this summer with huge success and am getting ready to hang art work in some coffee shops and a B&B, so I do feel I need some protection on my photos, especially since I know of someone who was downloading them without my permission.

If you're not worried about a screen capture, why are you worried about a right-click?
They're pretty much the same.

Well, there may be better ways of doing a screen capture than I have, but when I do a screen capture, I get everything on the screen, versus a download, I just get the photo. I of course would prefer they not do either, but anytime I've done a screen capture, it's come out very poor.

Well, I stand corrected. I just did a screen capture of a BP image/page. Yeah...I guess I can still get a decent photo. Perhaps watermarking is the answer.

  Hi Christine,
I know this isn't what you wanted to hear but its way things are in the digital world. What I do is use small images with my copyright info on my BP sites and on my Zenfolio site where I upload very large image sizes because I am able to sell very large & even poster sized images on this site, I use the Zenfolio watermark in my galleries that aren't password protected.
If you know of someone who is copying/stealing your images without your consent, you have legal recourse.
I will try to find a recent article of a person who recently won a lawsuit in Washington State after a business illegally used images for their advertising. If I can find it, I will post it on here :)

Thanks Carlton. I really appreciate your response on this subject. Sorry also on the double posting before. I hit "submit" and nothing happened so I hit it again and got a double post.

Maybe I'm paranoid, but I've worked hard to learn about photography and Photoshop and have also spent a lot of money on this. To find out someone was downloading my photos was very disheartening.

Thank you again, and to everyone who commented on this issue.

In your Administration Center, Click on Image Sales and it will take you to where you can set up your photos for sale.
You will need to set up a PayPal account if you don't already have one.

  85 .  Selling photos
I am looking to try to sell some of my photos, make cards ect. I could really need the money at this time to help me out with the bills!!! Due to my husband having cancer and no longer able to work. Can anyone help me with this?
Carol

8/5/2009 3:53:00 PM

  Hello Carol,
I am not sure I completely understand what you are asking so if I go off in the wrong direction, let me know.
I recently got a Zenfolio account because I like the ease of selling through them. Customers pick what they want and place the order and the prints are shipped directly to them with the profits going into your account. You can set your price lists and they also have frames, etc.. if your customers desire.
Use my Zenfolio Referral Code: KFZ-B24-7PG
Next thing I will mention is networking. I belong to facebook and belong to local & other Yahoo groups that help to get my name & work out there.
Jim Zuckerman also teaches a course about Making Money with your Photography and I have been wanting to take this course for some time and I will when I have the time :) He teaches you how to get published, stock photography sites and much more. Its a bit of an investment to take the class but I think you would make that up in no time as you have some beautiful and very sellable images in your gallery.
I am sorry to hear about your hardships and I will send prayers of healing & prosperity.
I hope this helps,
Blessings, Carlton

86 .  Trouble updating basic BP site
I am unable to move photos (by unclicking the box) from one folder on my BP site to another folder. I have made at least 4 attempts and spent a lot of time trying to do this - but BP will not recognize the changes or else I am doing something wrong (yes, I do click "save" at the bottom of the screen). Is anyone else having this trouble???

Thanks!

When I upload directly to my domain site and check the box for "display" - when I then go to my BP gallery - the "display" box is not checked and I must do it for every pic I have uploaded....anyone else having this trouble????

Thanks!!!

Yes, but that's just the way it is, I think. I've never done any different. If there's a way to make something display on both the website and the gallery, I don't know what it is.

90 .  creating your own slide show
Hi guys, I was just wondering if you allow us to upload our own slide show with our own music to our delux web site? I have another site that I use to upload slide shows that I created, which allows me a little more creativity and I can use my own music, that I've already purchased. I create the slide show my self and then when it's all done I upload. It would be great if we could do that here, then I could stop paying for the other site.
