21 .  How to make photos available for download
I need to put a couple of hundred photos from my daughter's high school band up on a page and let people view and then download them...... I'm not charging for this.

Is there a way to easily do this??

As far as I know, none of the BP website/pages allow viewer downloads---and if they did, it would only be the 800 pixel display size... You may need to use an alternative photo-hosting site for this particular task.

I don't know if you can directly upload a photo like you do in your gallery. But you can add an image by using the text that you type in the box on the upload page.
You have to use an image that's already been uploaded to your website. First, right click the image to get the window that pops up with "save image" etc...
Towards the bottom you'll see "image info". Click that and you'll get the window that has the location of the image.
Copy that, and in the text box of your page, type at the end of it. The image will then show up with the text when you upload it to the page.

You type all that together. Then paste the location.
Then at the end, you type

  23 .  copyrights
Hello BP, recently I typed in my name on the internet to see how easily someone could locate my website (in case they forgot the site's name). I found my BetterPhoto website, lasstudio.com , and also found a site that my name was used with one of my gallery images. The site was Jigsaw Planet.com... They "somehow" acquired one of my images from my gallery and are using it for a jigsaw puzzle without my approval... I thought that it was not possible to save our images in any fashion , once on our websites. I have not sent that photo to anyone via email, etc. It's only on my laptop and on my BetterPhoto website....
Would like your input on this... thanks in advance... Linda Sandbo www.lasstudio.com

Quite easy to get a photo off a website. Right click or screen capture is all it takes once it's on the internet.
An extreme abbreviated version of what you do with unauthorized use of your photo is to send a cease and desist letter informing them of your knowledge of them using your photo. For actual legal action, you need to actually file your copyright with U.S. copyright office to start with. That really should be done soon after photos are actually created, which is what professionals do with all their photos.
For amateurs or lower level professionals a simple watermark is sometimes all they do, and may be all that's needed to keep photos from being used. You'll find many old threads talking about the same subject. As well as stories that google can bring up about photos taken from flickr and other places used in ads, etc...

I'd like to hear a follow up from Linda about this issue. Gregory NAILED it. I've had images lifted from my Flickr account and used without permission for advertising.. Won both cases, cash settlement.

Back to Linda's question: For some reason I also thought right click was disabled on BP.

Gregory's right... any photo posted anywhere on the web today, can be "lifted" in a split second, by anyone so inclined.
Right-click is disabled at BP---but screen grab/screen capture functionality is not something BP (or any other website) can prevent. All photos can be lifted from BP---because all photos viewable in a browser anywhere on the web can be lifted. However, a screen grab at BP will only result in an image sized to the actual display size seen when viewing a gallery... ie, 800 pixels long-side.
BP visitors, however, cannot download the actual image file (JPG, TIF) which you uploaded... And since BP doesn't display images larger than 800 pixels on the long side, most BP members I know upload their files already pre-sized down to 800 pixels long---so that they can control/tweak the resizing process, rather than use BP's built-in resizing algorithms.
So even if someone could potentially hack in and reach your original uploaded file on BP's servers, they'd only get that 800 pixel file (same as what they get in screen-grab mode).

Thomas, as for f/u on this issue I tried to contact the Jigsaw Puzzle website, etc. with no response after several tries... I have a friend that is an attorney that is looking into this for me.. I am currently traveling on our boat and have not had a great deal of time to follow up just yet...It's the principal .. even if they can not use my actual image file.. it is wrong.. anyway you look at it... I thought initially that this was not possible on BP, but as Greg explained it, now I see the light!! If I get it resolved, I will post on BP... Thanks to all of you for your help and support always....

THX Christopher, wasn't aware they could only grab the 800 pixel viewable file. Basically, useless to anyone except to use possibly for commercial/web or to make a really crummy looking 5x7.

Linda, good to have an attny friend for this. Believe me, the culprit KNOWS they stole the image, as did the fools who stole mine. It's wrong on all levels

24 .  Facebook like logo on my Betterphoto website?
Hi!
I wonder if it's possible to put the Facebook "like" logo on my website. Has anyone done that? I want it to link my own Business page on FB.

:)

One good way to add social media is to add the sharethis.com widget. It has a facebook "like" integration, and you will have some control of how the button looks and works.

Add it to the "Display Custom Banner Ad" when you go to your Admin Center>Design tab, and it will appear at the bottom of each page.

Hope this helps, and Happy Shooting!

My experience has been the gallery purchases take about 2 business days or so. I would imagine weekends don't see a lot of progress setting up a new upgrade. My guess would be you'd see something later tonite (Mon), or tomorrow.

7/25/2011 10:06:00 AM

Yes, the websites, upgrades, and sometimes the Basic galleries can take 2 business days to process, but we try our best to get everything pushed through as quickly as possible on the Monday following the weekend orders.
The automatic email response is just to let you know that we are not necessarily staffed for the weekend so replies will probably come on the following Monday.
Hope that helps!

27 .  Lack of Support for iPAD
I would like to be able to manage my deluxe site with my iPAD. I cannot even do some simple maintenance as adding a new category and selecting a photo. I have sent email to BetterPhoto to try to understand their commitment to supporting this platform and have not received a straight forward reply. I am a professional software tester and offered my services in trade for helping them out. Am I alone in my frustration of BP keeping up with current technologies such as iPAD and offering a sharing app and being iOS compatible. Similarly I have been frustrated with lack of an upload plugin to Lightroom. I feel that the price paid for website hosting as well as the lack of new features is starting to have me question my commitment to subscribing once I finish my current subscription.

Unfortunately, it doesn't appear that BP has kept up with recent technology concepts, particularly mobile platforms.

Nor does it seem to be something they are pursuing. (I should say, the lack of any BP communication to the membership, about new development, would reasonably suggest no such development is being pursued.)

Whether still in the slumps / running a skeleton crew from the economic downturn, or just riding the status quo of their pre-existing service model, there appears to be no active development for new platform functionality (nor even updates/improvements/refreshes to the existing site.)

As such, BP remains a platform best suited to computer-based browsers.

2/29/2012 10:31:08 AM

I agree. I am disappointed in the lack of change in the model and keeping up with technology. I enjoy the community and the contest. I am planning on downgrading my deluxe membership to basic when it expires and am planning to use the money I save for customization of my smugmug account.

2/29/2012 10:34:44 AM

  Hi Ilene-

ipad or kindle browsers can navigate your admin center with their web browsers. We don't have a dedicated site management app though. Uploading from mobile devices however is something we're looking at and want to add.

3/2/2012 9:04:00 AM

Thanks for your response Jay. I usually only travel on weekends with my iPad. I want to be able to share the photos I've taken as well as to be able to enter the contest with newly taken photos. Now, I have to queue the photos up in my admin center to be able to enter them in a contest with my iPad. The iPad has been out for 2 full years at this point and is the most used portable device. I would like to see BetterPhoto trying to stay or lead rather than to play very late catch up. As I also posted before in a different thread, the lack of a plugin for Lightroom to allow for uploading photos seemlessly into BP is sorely lacking. LR 4 will be coming out and is the most used photo management system by photographers. Once again I enjoy the community here but the lack of keeping up with current trends and no innovation with the site, leads to my frustration.

3/2/2012 10:34:33 AM

Jay, I just went to the admin center and there are several functions not supported by the Safari browser such as Update Category Sort Order. I hope you can ake the entire admin center iPad compatible.

28 .  Change order of articles?
Ok, I'm wondering if there's a way to change the order of articles that we write/post on our sites?
I don't want to have to alter the title of my articles just to compensate the automatic alphabetical order that the site uses.
We can change the order of our photos, and even gallery categories, so why not our articles, too?
Just wondering if I'm not seeing the option somewhere.
Thanks!

go to admin center> photos> home page photos> click create a slide show under options (I know you have already created one, but this is where you add to what you already have) then it will bring up your list of slide images and this is where you add a photo id# or delete one or change any of the slide show.

30 .  Google Analytics code being placed in wrong area
Hi!
Am having trouble getting an answer from every source I've tried...
I am attempting to use the Google Analytics program on my website, however I have discovered that BetterPhoto is applying the Analytics code to the wrong section of the source code on my website.
Is this something I can fix from another area on my computer, or am I forced to have to wait for BetterPhoto Customer Service to go into their system and fix it?
