  1 .  Identity Theft
I have sent Jim an email but this is of urgent need to address.
Some time ago I had to let my Deluxe website expire due to unemployment and cost.
A couple of people contacted me recently to say they had noticed I had updated my website.
On examination I found that someone had hijacked my old site, still with my identity, and uploaded photography information and contact forms to elsewhere.
My concern is that I believe this was my Betterphoto URL and the identity theft may be a scam.
Here is the link: http://brettdolsenphotography.com/

Which is the hijacked site? Your gallery and the site that you have the link to both have pictures from Australia.

3/5/2014 4:07:11 PM

  Thankyou Gregory,
The site that has been hijacked is http://brettdolsenphotography.com/
My basic Betterphoto site still has my images.
Anyone that googles Brett Dolsen Photography will hit the hijacked page and URL at the top of the search page.
There is a blog there with four entries titled *The best of photography *Photography lighting tip kits*Photography information about street photography*Marriage ceremony photography courses.
There is a contact form also to someone else!
There is also links to to websites*PaulaGPhotography and scottbirdsongphoto.com
There are none of my images or information displayed other than the social media links will take you to my pages and the title of the blog being BrettDolsenphotography.

Hoping this clarifies the problem

  Hi Brett,

I can understand your concerns.

However, the terms "identify theft" and "hijacked" are not really the correct terms for this situation.

You let you domain name expire in early 2013. It because available for another to register it and in August of 2013, someone did. They have the same name as you but operate in a different part of the world (it appears to me to be in Washington, near Seattle). So they have set up a website, published a few blog posts, etc. The social media links direct visitors to the main URLs for twitter, Google+, LinkedIn, etc so when you click one of them, it appears to go to YOUR twitter, G+, LinkedIn etc. but it is really just going to the main site for each and because you are signed in, it looks like your profile there. When I click on one, I see my own LinkedIn page, for example.

I hope this has clarified the situation and allayed your fears. There is nothing illegal or scammy going on here... it's just how domain name availability and registration works.

I'll email this to you as well.

Enjoy!
Jim

I guess the main point here is to never let your domain name expire.
The person that has the name now does not have the same family or given name as me.
My information initially uploaded on the deluxe portfolio still shows up in search engines so anyone that searches for me is being directed to somewhere else.
It seems that someone is attempting to capitalise on other peoples reputation and credibility.
I see this as a warning to other members not to let your domain name pass into someone else's hands.

2 .  Displaying BP Gallery images on Deluxe site
I took the plunge and purchased a Deluxe site and just started poking around.

Is there a way to display ALL images I currently have on the Basic site... or do I need to do this (30) images at a time, which seems primitive.

I presume I could review after "copying" them all... and select those I do NOT want displayed.

Thanks!

Hi Terry -- All the images you've ever placed in your BP Member Center, are available to appear in your new Deluxe. The Deluxe has a "categorize in bulk" feature that would let you pull every image ever, into a category of your choosing... not terribly useful, if you plan on having multiple categories / albums.
I've kept my Deluxe to a subset of my Basic. I don't display every image (currently in my Basic) in my Deluxe; but that's just one choice...
I created several categories (I consider them albums) by theme, then started manually picking which images I wanted in each, from the normal "Select & Categorize" menu in Deluxe Admin. Yes, you can only see 30 images at a time this way (to assign categories) -- but since I was only doing a subset, it was a one-time setup "chore" to sift through and find the particular images I wanted to appear in my "slimmed down" categories...

Thanks, Chris. Type explanation is helpful.

3 .  viewing shopping cart on Pro Websites
I am a little confused about the Pro Websites and when someone wants to buy an image. I have "Add to Cart" on my images and when that is clicked the pricing structure comes up and a person can select size they want. But if you then want to continue shopping and view more images, there is no button or tab to view or return to the shopping cart. I am sure I am missing something and would greatly appreciate some direction.

Also I set up a new gallery and I can't figure out how to get the "Add to Cart" link to show up in the new gallery. It is there on my older galleries I just drawing a blank on how I did that - so I need help with this as well.

Thanks for your help - Bill

  Hi Bill,

I believe some of the confusion might be coming from the use of the phrase "Add to Cart". I might go with another phrase like "Buy this photo!"

For the new gallery, did you set up any of the phtos in that gallery to have "products" associated with it?

Hope that gets you pointed in the right direction.

Enjoy showcasing your photos. You have, by the way, beautiful photography up there!

4 .  Categorizing in the Gallery
How do I get my photo into my gallery and categorize it?

6/23/2013 12:57:34 PM

  Hi Sandra,
Great hearing from you!

I enjoyed checked out your website, and I see that you have a really nice variety of galleries.

To categorize new uploads - or older images, too - go into your Deluxe Admin Center. Click on the Photos tab. Then click on the Select and Categorize Photos link in the center. All of your uploaded images appear below, with the ability to categorize.

Hope this helps.

Thanks,
Kerry

P.S. Just in case ... perhaps you are referring to a Basic BetterPholio gallery? I don't believe you have one, but I could be wrong. :)

  5 .  Galleries
Why can't I find an option on this site to update my galleries? I want to add new galleries based on trips taken, etc.

6/2/2013 7:55:41 AM

Hi Peggi. Click on My Member Center at the top of the screen and on the left side you will see BP Gallery. Click on that and then look for Photo Albums on the left side. Click on that and at the top is an option to create a new album. Hope this helps.

  Hi Peggi;
If you're talking about adding albums/categories to your BP Pro or BP Deluxe website, you do go to Member Center as Philip suggested - but then look for "Admin Center" on the left. Click that, then from the 6 tab choices across the top, choose "Photos" - within that menu, choose "Create/Update Photo Categories."

  6 .  Galleries
I have had a gallery with BetterPhoto for many years now. I just suggested to a friend that she use this website is she is looking for somewhere to put her pictures. She said it is almost $200 a year to have a gallery. I know that cannot be correct but when I look under galleries I can't find anything that's less than that either.

7 .  Revising my Pro BetterPholio web site
I am wanting to change/update/revise by pro web site. This may take me several days as I am not the most proficient computer guy. Is there a way to keep the old version operational while I work on the new version? What is the best way to go about revising/updating a site? Any suggestions would be most appreciated. Thanks - Bill

2/27/2013 10:21:42 AM

Good advice would be to talk to the computer guy at BP...you can reach him at jay@betterphoto.com He knows everything. LOL

2/27/2013 12:18:18 PM

  Hi Bill,
Good to see you here in the Forum!

It's not possible to keep the original version in place while you work on a new version. So the best advice would be to jot down the design preset, any advanced site design elements, etc., that is in your current version - just in case you ultimately decided you don't want to make a change. (Note: you could also capture a screenshot of the relevant pages in your Deluxe/Pro Admin Center.)

Hope this helps!

Kerry

Hi Carolyn and Kerry -Thanks for the responses - I decided to post a note stating I am updating/revising the web site but images are still available in the Gallery. My goal is to be more active with my web site and to begin writing or start blogging about my experiences as I grow in photography. So a fresh design seemed appropriate. Thanks again - Bill

8 .  Best resolution for photos for website
I am having trouble with images "stepping" on a diagonal. I am sizing them at 21 x 14" at 300 dpi, which is my standard print size. If I reduce the image size, they don't look as good (i.e. I loose color and depth). How to keep a good file and eliminate stepping?

Are you asking about the best image pixel size to upload here to display at BP?
If so, I recommend you take your final image edited (full size) version, then resize that down to 800 on the longest edge. (DPI is irrelevant at that point.) Then upload that resulting "small" file to your gallery.
I've not experienced any loss of color or depth or sharpness this way, for my BP uploads, and I get to control the image reduction process - if, when I resize to 800 in photoshop, I think it needs a slight nudge of sharpness, I can do that, before uploading...
If you upload a "big" file, BP will resize it to 800, and you have no control over their resizing process.

  9 .  deluxe sites
I now have a basic website and am thinking of moving up to the deluxe site. My question is - will my photographs from my basic site automatically go to my deluxe site and will those that access my old site be redirected to the new site?

Hi Cathy---there are a lot of new features in the Deluxe site, that the Basic doesn't have. You can create Albums (and albums within albums) for grouping your photos.
All the images you've uploaded to BP, are available for you to display (or not display) in your Deluxe. When I set mine up, I recall having to pick which ones I wanted to display---my Deluxe didn't match my Basic, in terms of images that displayed. (Nor did I want it to.)
I still have a Basic, and that address/URL is entirely different from my Deluxe. However, from my Basic, there's a link under every photo, to my Deluxe site.
I believe you can also deactivate from display, all your Basic gallery images, and only have them on display in your Deluxe, but I've never tried that.

9/27/2012 8:56:29 AM

  Hi Cathy,
Christopher is correct, (Thanks Christopher!) and your images will automatically be available in your website admin center > photos tab > photo manager.
To have photos only on your website, you would mark them with the "Private" checkbox, and then make sure that the "Display" checkbox is not checked.
Happy Shooting!

10 .  problem creating a link in text on your BP site?
At the risk of having this sit stagnant on here due to low interest in the forums I'll pose this question.

I've been attempting to create a hyper link to my own custom sales checkout from within the text of my BP website. The link keeps coming up "broken". Weird messages in return, failure notices etc.

The problem is with the BP site, found after contacting Mallory with customer service and hours of frustration. She tried to fix it by entering the correct "url" and html language for me and she encountered the same problems. She passed it on to the techs, but now it's been a full day without even a polite "we're working on it for you".

My question is how many of you have attempted to add a link someplace within the text of your website (NOT on your links page) for your photography business and had this happen?

I've found too many quirks to my liking using this as a webpage for my business.

Hi Thomas; I have an embedded link in the text of my BP Deluxe Gallery's homepage (see www.chrisbudny.com) as well as in the "caption text" under one of my photo albums. They "went in" just fine when I first set up the text...
I do see the active link to your fineartamerica gallery, however...

7/31/2012 9:27:08 AM

  Hi Thomas,
Sorry to hear you've run into a problem. I include live links (via coding that I've input) throughout my own site.

Are you still having a problem? Let me know!

Thank you BOTH, Kerry and Chris! I did eventually hear back from the BP customer service and technical depts. The issue was with the way BP has their websites designed. Fortunately it appears to be resolved and the links are active.

This is good information for anyone who is using their BP site for more than simply sharing photos..actually even works for them as well.

When making a hyper link on your BP webpage you cannot use "quotations" as you would elsewhere. When I went back and changed the input html without the quotes as they requested, it worked nicely :)

It's "OK" for now,a temporary fix. We have some serious limitations with these Pro and Deluxe webpages. I've had a local gentleman who is a SEO specialist and web site builder look at this (homepage) for me and he explained how and why it will not work to my expectations and anticipated traffic flow. He see's it as a tool to get customers to take online photography/how-to courses and not much else. Not enough space for keywords or phrases and the host site itself has a very low google search ranking. (which I do not even know how to begin finding that out) He can help with the SEO, but for the investment he can build a much better website with the ability to interact, blog, write articles with related images to accompany accompany these articles. (an plenty more) I see that as my next step, maybee only keeping this as an additional web presence. I see several other professionals with more name recognition than I at this point maintain a phantom BP website and do their primary business/sell videos and other products through their own site.

Thanks again! TS
