For the Q&A pic, when you upload it at the member center, when the page with the provided avatars comes back up after uploading yours, hit the page refresh button before you leave that page if you are still seeing your old avatar.

10/19/2013 11:13:37 PM

Yeah, you have to refresh the page. I had oodles of troubles with mine a few years ago until somebody (probably Greg) told me to refresh.

10/20/2013 3:20:40 PM

Thanks for the advice on refresh. I think on my mac it is reload. I have also had trouble when I upload a new mini pic. Thanks for the tip!

  85 .  Filter Question
I hear people talking about a filter they use for bright sunlit areas. I have a uv filter on all of my lenses but what is the lens that I here others talk about that helps out in the bright sunshine?

10/16/2013 10:38:23 AM

  Hi Corky,

It's Lynne again. Perhaps people are talking about a polarizing filter, which can saturate blue skies on a sunny day and can remove reflections from shiny surfaces. You can control these effects by rotating the outer ring on a polarizing filter. Just resist the temptation to oversaturate blue skies.

A UV filter is important to have on all your lenses for protection, but it won't make a significant difference on the appearance of your images.

Any other input from anyone?

10/16/2013 11:07:35 AM

I had a question about resizing images and got a response but didn't really understand what he meant. I've been told not to resample, but my question was what is the best method to get a smaller version of your original when you need to submit it online or send it in an email?

Thanks for all your input. You have really helped me.

10/16/2013 11:09:53 AM

  Hi Corky,

I think that Richard was trying to emphasize the importance of keeping the original image as a large file, while creating a duplicate to resize to a smaller size.

I know that you have both Photoshop and Lightroom. Here's one way to do it: In Photoshop, open up your image, and go to Image > Duplicate. This will duplicate your original image. Then go to Image > Image Size and you'll get a window that will allow you to resize your duplicate image either by changing the pixels or by changing the Pixel Dimensions or File Size. Make sure the 3 boxes are checked at the bottom: Scale Syles, Constrain Proportions, and Resample Image. If you're emailing photos to friends or family, I might make the photo 5 x 7 inches or so. Otherwise, if you're submitting online, check to see what pixel size is required.

Hope this helps!

10/16/2013 12:38:19 PM

  Resizing to about 5x7
Resizing to about 5x7
The image I opened had a little different perspective than 5x7, but it is the same idea. The only difference is the width of a true 5x7 will be 700 pixels, and the document size will be 7 inches.

you can read up on the resampling options direct from Adobe, here:

http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/resizing-image.html

Corky,

Sorry you found my response confusing. What I tried to say is: sometimes resampling is the only thing you can do. I have been an expert in the field for 20 years... If someone with a similar amount of experience is telling you not to resample, I am guessing that they were referring to the original. Don't resample an original, resample a copy/duplicate, as Lynne says. Do you have a source that you got the info about *not* resampling from?

You will have choices for resampling type. Bicubic Sharper will probably be your best choice.

Also, a 5x7 on a computer is going vary depending on the resolution of the monitor that it is viewed on. The best way to control this is with pixels. You will want to have about 500 x 700 pixels @ 100ppi. I'll upload a screen of what the resize screen should look like.

I hope that helps! Sometimes the questions you might think are simple have a lot of twists and possibilities.

Richard

10/17/2013 3:34:40 AM

Oh, and about the filter... polarizing or neutral density would be what Corky seems to be mentioning. Polarizing is more beneficial when shooting around water, glass and other highly reflective surfaces.

Believe it or not I fly against the grain with the UV filters, as I don't use them -- it is another piece of glass to add to the pile. For safety I use a secure wrist or hand strap.

Richard

10/17/2013 3:51:00 AM

Thanks Richard, that clears things up for me. I think it was in a tutorial video from Michael the Maven that he said not to resample. That's what I've always done for web or email. I usually just go in, set it to percent and do 25 to 35 percent of the size and it's always worked great. Of course I never do it to the original. I was relieved when you said that resampling is sometimes the only choice.

Thanks!
Corky

10/17/2013 7:17:21 AM

  Glad that helped.

Did look through a few of Michael the Mavens things, and do see references to resizing in the context of video (which he seems ok with), but not images for email. Of course I didn't read the whole thing and didn't watch every video... I'd be curious as to his reasoning if he does state that, however, because I can't think of a reason to support "never resizing" unless it is to originals. Advice is no good unless there are solid reasons behind it.

On the other hand, I did see some errors in Michaels blogs, like where he says "browsers tend to desaturate images". That is actually a color management issue, and a common mistake: he likely works in AdobeRGB color space (not a bad choice) and fails to convert to sRGB before uploading (which leads to desaturation). Browsers tend to ignore profiles... so you'll get desaturated results with the wrong workflow.

My point: take any individual's advice with a grain of salt... the consensus is usually closer to the truth -- and if your personal experience proves otherwise, do what's best for you. Like my mention of not using UV filters... it works for me not to, and the reasoning behind using UV filters is generally valid for other people. My parting from the consensus had to do with a fluke accident in which my UV filter seems to have damaged a lens... I think lens hood, a cap, and hand-strap works well... for me.

  86 .  Where to Photograph
I live in Phoenix, which should be a place of endless possibilities to shoot pictures. But where? I went to a park yesterday and wanted to get some tight shots of kids' faces. I asked the parents' permission and they all said no! I was so disappointed. Would love to receive ideas from all of you as to how to steal candid shots of people ... or, for that matter, anything without causing suspicion in this weary world of ours.

10/16/2013 10:34:16 AM

  Hi Corky,

Your Exposure teacher here! Do you have any friends, or friends of friends who have children you can photograph? This may be your best bet.

It's a real shame that the parents in the park said no to your photography. At least you asked! If you ever see someone you want to take pictures of again, I would still ask, and offer a digital image to them in return.

As for shooting candids, I know that a lot of people do what's called "street photography" with a long lens. The subjects aren't aware that they're being photographed in most cases. However, I would still try to get permission when photographing children.

The areas surrounding Phoenix offer a lot of scenic photography possibilities, such as the San Francisco peaks, Sedona, and areas around Flagstaff. I just read in one of my latest issues of "Arizona Highways" about Hart Prairie, just outside of Flagstaff, which has great fall color.

Hello Corky, I spend a great deal of my summer shooting festivals along the left coast and what separates me from other festival photographers are my candid and people shots. Most photographers will shoot 50 pics of the guitar player and a few of their friends. I roam around the festival and find little stories that are happening all around me. There are kids getting their faces painted or chasing bubbles, couples snuggling in the grass and a colorful bunch of costumed music lovers. I have been doing this for years and many people know me but for those that dont, I will look at the parents as I am getting ready to shoot just to get their nod or smile of approval and I rarely am asked to not take a shot. Most of the festivals I attend are bluegrass, jamband type festivals and there are always lots f kids and and parades etc... Take a peek at my galleries here on BP and m,y festival galleries at http://carltonward.zenfolio.com/
Cheers, Carlton

Hop on a double decker tour bus, one with an open top would be great. Take snapshots with a phone or a point and shoot of places you can later go back to.

If you take a candid photo of someone you don't know, smile, show them the image on the LCD, ask if you can take some more. Kids often will ham it up for you, then rush to the camera to see how they look!

Take photos of vendors at farmers' markets. Buy one of their vegetables to help open the door. Print out a photo and return with it the next week as a gift.

Another idea. Return to the park where you saw the kids after 5. You may well find people home from work walking and playing with their pets. Most won't mimd if you take a photo of Fido chasing a ball or frisbee. Share the results. I even had a person offer to pay me to take a photo of here dog playing on a beach.

  87 .  File Size
I am told when needing to resize an image it is best not to resample. So, how then is the best way to resize an image so it's not so large when transferring to an email?

10/16/2013 9:16:42 AM

It is best not to resize *if possible*. Different media requires different resolutions. Monitors run from about 72ppi to 120ppi (with exceptions). Home printers will require somewhere between 180ppi and 240ppi. Offset magazine printing around 305ppi. If you have an image going to print on the cover of a 12x9 magazine, you are going to need 3660 x 2745 pixels (about 10mp). You put that same image on the web or in an email without sizing and it will be at least 30.5 inches, and likely more. Clearly over-kill.

What I try to get people to do is NEVER resize an original, but make purposed images from the original, saved as a separate file. This way, you always have the original full resolution image to make other images from -- and those images can be resized for their purpose. Once you drop them in an email, toss the copies! Otherwise you'll just collect repeats and make a mess and have bunches of files floating around.

As you will likely be sizing down significantly (depends on the original resolution), you want to use a resizing method that incorporates some sharpening or sharpen separately. Think 72ppi. 720x576 will pretty much add up to an 8x10... But you'll want to consider the purpose and the person you are sending to as well.

I hope that helps!

10/16/2013 10:18:22 AM

I do usually keep my original, but what I have been doing is resampling a copy and then using that. What do you mean by making a purposed image? Is that what I'm doing when I resample a copy? But still, I'm resampling ... is there any other way to reduce the size?

10/16/2013 10:22:26 AM

If you are trying to accomplish something specific like sending a smaller file through the Internet to a service for printing so it gets to the destination with full resolution, you have choices to make with compression and file type, etc. If you are casually exchanging an email with a friend, your choices might be quicker and easier.

How exactly do you want to reduce the size? Dimension in pixels? In inches? File size? I've written chapters of books on the subject of file size, resolution, file type, compression... I'm sure we can sort it out.

Tell me exactly what you are trying to accomplish.

Richard

10/16/2013 1:07:01 PM

I'm talking about resizing to send to friends in email, or making the file smaller, for instance, for Better Photo when I need to submit a picture for my portfolio or a class. I don't have a preference as to what to reduce it to, i.e. resolution, file type or compression. I just want it smaller with good clarity for the reasons mentioned above.

If you want to make it quicker to send in an email, and also when the receiver opens the file to have it about the size of what you see in anyone's gallery, then you would resample. If you had a 6000x4000 original you wanted to send, you would go to image size and with resample, change to 600x400. This would reduce the file size from a bunch of Mb to kb. Making it quicker for slow internet connections. It would also reduce the image size, so the whole thing fits on their screen.
However, you could reduce file size without resample by saving a copy of it at a lower setting. Instead of highest quality of 10 save as a 4. But if you didn't do anything with the image size, that 6000x4000 would may now be a kb file, but the dimensions wouldn't change, and the receiver may be scrolling back and forth to see the whole image on their screen.
Like Eric, I mean Richard said, for viewing on your screen, you don't need too high resolution for a good image.

10/16/2013 4:56:52 PM

"I'm talking about resizing to send to friends in email, or making the file smaller, for instance, for Better Photo when I need to submit a picture for my portfolio or a class... I just want it smaller with good clarity for the reasons mentioned above."

That was what I assumed in the first answer. If you have an image that is big and you want to make it smaller at the same resolution, you have to resample (technically called 'decimation').

If you think about pixels as lightbulbs... Say you have a bunch of lightbulbs in a 3x3 foot box, you want to put those bulbs in a 1x1 foot box, they are just not going to fit. Some will need to be sacrificed.

Resampling for a purpose is not a sin if you are careful and work from the original. Just don't resize the original, save off a copy, and then -- oops -- resave the original at the smaller size.

As it is an email and not more critical work, my first suggestion is the one to go with. And most of what Gregory said, but you may not want to go as low as 4 on the quality for the jpeg if you are already sensitive about the resizing... stick to 7 or 8. If you view at 100% on your screen (see the viewing % on the image window in photoshop or elements) before you send, you will essentially see what the recipient will...

  88 .  September 2013 Contest Countdown
Greetings fellow BP Members! The days may be getting shorter, but it doesn't make the Contest Results come any faster, alas!

The purpose of this monthly thread is to share your one favorite image from your entries last month -- your personal favorite, or your most hopeful, or your proudest photographic achievement that month, etc.; often, this isn't always the image that you *think* will win, nor the image the BP Judges may be drawn to! It isn't about predicting your Finalists/Winners (although that's a fun trick when it happens here!); it is about sharing your personal best/favorite image.
So give your favorite a showcase here, tell us why you picked it, and join us in the countdown... Best of luck to everyone in the September results!

++++++++++++++++++
Some helpful hints for attaching photos into a BP Forum Thread, if you're unfamiliar with the process:

1) Sign into BP completely (name + password.)

2) If you have NOT YET submitted your Contest Entry for today, you can take advantage of the "Photo ID" method (to pull an existing image from your Member Center into your Reply to this thread.) This avoids a duplicate image upload to your Member Center. Go get the Photo ID# from your Member Center first, then come to back this thread, click Respond, enter the text of your reply, then choose "1" from the images-to-attach drop-down (even though you won't actually be uploading a file.) Click Submit; at the next screen populate the "Photo ID" box shown over at the right. Skip the other text fields on that screen, and finalize the submit at the bottom.

3) If you HAVE ALREADY entered the Contest for today, you can't use the Photo ID method *today*. You can either wait until tomorrow to reply here (before making your new Contest entry) or, upload a new copy of your image (from your PC) into this thread. This produces a duplicate image in your Member Center; however, you don't have to make that duplicate visible in your Gallery.
If you're uploading a duplicate, I suggest titling it "For Forum" so it stands out in your Member Center, for easier housecleaning later on. This can also help direct BP viewers to go find the original image in your gallery, when they want to leave a comment. Likewise, if you want to add a comment to a photo seen here, first try to tell if it is a duplicate upload. As a courtesy, try to find the original image in the member's gallery and leave your comment there instead of on the duplicate.

Hi Mitch -- I think you had already made your still-life/Gone Fishing contest entry for today, before you came here and tried to embed your Favorite. (Your contest entry shows about 9:45am PST upload, while your first attempt here in the Forum shows 10:55am PST.)

The Photo ID method to embed existing photos, only works (each day) *before* you make the daily contest entry on that day. As soon as you enter an image into the contest for a given day, the Photo ID method will not work in the Forum until the next morning...

This is my favorite shot from September. I went to the Friends of Bodie day picnic with my friend Linda Ruiz a couple of years ago. There were wonderful clouds and the sky was so blue!

Good luck to everyone else - and glad to see this thread, Chris. I find myself forgetting to even upload my daily entry sometimes which never used to happen. Anyway . . . here's to the Staff Favorites, Finalists and Winners in advance. The western span of the San Francisco Bay Bridge, shot from the Embarcadero last month. This weekend it stands empty and idle, closed while construction crews work to connect the new eastern span on the other side of Treasure Island. The old eastern span was discovered to be flawed when part of it collapsed during the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. Meanwhile, the new span, while designed to withstand a massive earthquake, exhibited problems during testing, when 32 bolts snapped. Officials insist it's still safer than the old eastern span. I think I'll stay on this side for a while!

I like this one out of my September entries. I entered it on the first day so not sure if that hurts its chances or not.

Well, good luck, everyone. It's so late in the month now, they will have no alternative but to rush through the rest of the month and miss half the good ones. It's getting quite frustrating.

10/24/2013 3:24:47 PM

For me, the worst part about the huge gaps in activity at BP is not that they end up rushing (though that is annoying), but that it has curtailed almost completely our interest in the site. I used to check in multiple times a day for all kinds of reasons. Now I seldom check in more than once or twice and would not do that if it wasn't for a critique club here that I really enjoy (FFFP Club if anyone is interested).

I have that tingling in my bones that we're bound to see Finalists within a day... May that be a "treat" for everyone in their trick-or-treating this week...! Best of luck!

Don't we need Staff Favorites first though?

Hi Tammy; yes, the Staff Fav's are new -- came out in July's contest. They are a new "layer" in the progression from Editor's Pick to Finalist to Winner.

From the pool of Editor's Picks, Staff Fav's are selected. Then from those Staff Fav's, Finalists are selected.

Tammy, BP also has a labeling problem with on their finalist page. The August finalists are also labeled as September Finalists, which makes it very confusing. You probably went to the People category of the "September" finalists, but you were really looking at August finalists. Still confused? :-)

10/31/2013 4:03:29 AM

Actually September was blank until the SF's came out. SF's are in categories just like finalist would be for the correct month, however if you look under people my photo is NOT there but it I got a notification that I had a SF photo and it shows in my gallery. Hmmmm Maybe there are not done loading all of them.

10/31/2013 4:25:10 AM

I don't know what page you are seeing, Tammy. I'm looking at the SF page and it doesn't have categories. What's the URL # on the page you are looking at?

10/31/2013 4:28:59 AM

  http://www.betterphoto.com/contest/finalists.asp

copy and paste

I know it says (Photography Contest Finalists - September 2013) but if you click on photo categories and then click each photo individual it will show they are all just SF's for the correct month of September, however, under people my is NOT listed but I do have one.........LOL

You are correct, Tammy. Interesting. At first, I thought maybe BP had posted the actual finalists without the formal notification, by accident. But I summed up the # of SFs that are at this link. Only 150. That number would be very low, if it were finalists. So, it's a mystery but I do think we'll see more than 150 finalists. I believe there were 750+ Staff Finalists (going off memory as I don't have the notification e-mail at work). And even if they take half of those for finalists, it would be far greater than 150.

(Correct, Ken -- 743 Staff Favs picked for Sept.)

10/31/2013 5:16:55 AM

So this means that they have only listed 20.0% of staff picks thus far based on 748 picks....

Tammy, they've only handed out Staff Favs for three months now, I think. And they've never displayed them like they did this month. It's quite possible you're really seeing the finalists...only 150, which would be a low percentage. Time will tell.

10/31/2013 5:31:50 AM

They are clearly labeled SF, however, it could be the finalist to come. If they only pick 150 finalist may do more harm than good unless they are trying to thin a crowd. They are a business and feel it would eventually drive people away leaving only the extreme best of the best to compete which most certainly would leave out any chances of myself ever getting to the finalist round. I would be FLOORED if they only picked 150 but then again, they have surprised us many times with hard changes. As you said, time will tell.

10/31/2013 5:39:52 AM

Nothing for me. Darn I had hoped my sunrise through the tree would have gotten a SF. Good luck to all still in. Wonderful images.

10/31/2013 5:43:49 AM

By my count there are 111 winners selected each month, so I think that this must be a glitch as there are not enough in the pool to account for both winners and finalists.

This is just a guess, but I suspect we're looking at the finalist nominations of just one (or perhaps two) judging queues. The glitch is that it is publicly visible. Once all the judges are finished the badges in this pool should turn to finalists... assuming they system works the same way it did years ago.

10/31/2013 6:23:29 AM

If this SF selection just started in July I really don't seen any of the August winners with such a badge. Surely the staff would have liked many of the winners. This is confusing for me.... hmmmm

10/31/2013 6:30:39 AM

The badges get replaced at each phase. The staff picks are essentially Semi-finalist. If it moves on to become a finalist, it's no longer a semi finalist and the badge is replaced. If it doesn't move on, it keeps the staff pick badge, presumably forever.

Tammy, if a SF gets a finalist, the finalist badge will replace the SF badge. That's why you don't see any SFs for the recent winners and finalists. Kinda like the gold medal replaces the silver finalist medal.

10/31/2013 6:36:31 AM

I SEE just like what happens to the finalist badges if you place in the contest.

10/31/2013 6:51:32 AM

But wait, why on earth would they add yet another step in the process with over 6000 photos a month to weed through? So does that mean only 1 of my 3 entries have the potential to move forward based on SF? Maybe I am just all mixed up and maybe that is why I enter very little these days...........LOL.

Nobody really knows the mysteries of how/why BP makes the various contest decisions they make ;) The addition of Staff Favs as yet another non-Finalist, non-Winner 'badge' was a bit of a head-scratcher for most of us...

10/31/2013 7:25:15 AM

So it appears that the Finalist page is currently listing the SFs ... I got an SF email notification for one of my photos, but it is not on the Finalist page with the other SFs. I think we are seeing the sausage being made, LOL!

Sorry if I confused people. I got the email yesterday saying I got a staff selection and there are 743 of them. Interestingly when I checked this morning 7AM irish time, I went through the finalists link and saw September finalists. They were adding pictures live as I watched the number in my Travel category increased as I was viewing them.

Sorry if I called finalists too soon.

10/31/2013 8:19:02 AM

I suspect it is a glitch as mentioned above -- an accidental "reveal" for some (hopefully not all) of the Finalists, *before* the announcement is actually sent out...?

89 .  viewing shopping cart on Pro Websites
I am a little confused about the Pro Websites and when someone wants to buy an image. I have "Add to Cart" on my images and when that is clicked the pricing structure comes up and a person can select size they want. But if you then want to continue shopping and view more images, there is no button or tab to view or return to the shopping cart. I am sure I am missing something and would greatly appreciate some direction.

Also I set up a new gallery and I can't figure out how to get the "Add to Cart" link to show up in the new gallery. It is there on my older galleries I just drawing a blank on how I did that - so I need help with this as well.

Thanks for your help - Bill

  Hi Bill,

I believe some of the confusion might be coming from the use of the phrase "Add to Cart". I might go with another phrase like "Buy this photo!"

For the new gallery, did you set up any of the phtos in that gallery to have "products" associated with it?

Hope that gets you pointed in the right direction.

Enjoy showcasing your photos. You have, by the way, beautiful photography up there!

lollllllllll Well, there definitely was a whole lot of Bull in this course-changing.

Btw, I'm now up to 50%. Nothing on my first entry in October and an EFP on my second. There are two more chances.

I really thought "Roadside Assistance" would rate one. Oh, well.

Just realized I do have one on the 25th - on an image I'd taken off display because I don't think it's that great LOL But none after that and I think my images from the 26th and 28th are much better. I forgot to enter on the 27th.

Skipped a lot of mine but at least they got my favorites :) Final tally is 14 out of 28 entries.
Good luck to all. Looks as if they may be pushing for a pre-Thanksgiving release, at least of Staff Favorites and Finalists, so they can sit back and enjoy the holiday with family, too.

11/25/2013 9:24:54 AM

Good luck, all!

For all of you who want to know, I DO NOT post any of my EP's on my Gallery. Trust me I entered 31 images for October and got 31 EP's. As far as November, I have not entered none. I was taking time off due to a personal tragedy.. Thank you

11/25/2013 1:54:19 PM

So sorry to hear that Brian! You are in my prayers!

It's not that I don't trust you, I just wanted to see your work, I've always enjoyed it! :-)

  Oct 28 - RED - T&P
Oct 29 - At Day's End - MT
Oct 30 - Touch Me Not - CA
Oct 31 - Lights in Yarra - T&P

That makes it 19 out of 23 images entered in October for me. Good luck to all in the next rounds.

Btw, thanks to Jill, who graciously took over from Cheryl - our favorite thread continues uninterrupted.

11/26/2013 6:23:31 AM

October was a good month for me. I believe there were 17 EP's out of 21 entered. I took some trips and had some new material so I am pleased. Brian, my prayers are with you. Good Luck, everyone.

11/26/2013 2:30:12 PM

Good luck everyone! Thank you, Jill, for being such a graceful Hostess!

11/27/2013 5:18:14 AM

Good luck to all in the contest and Happy Thanksgiving to our US members! Of course, any day is a good day to count your blessings, no matter where you are.

As a side note, I wasn't aware that we could resubmit entries via a new upload? I've seen quite a few and they are getting EPs....

11/27/2013 9:34:13 AM

Thanks You all...It was nothing :-) Can't wait to see who gets Staff Favs and Finalists!Hope you all have a magnificent Thanksgiving!

11/28/2013 1:38:38 PM

  Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!

Enjoy the holiday with thoughts of family and country, the turkey dinner, the family gathered together. There's a wonderful change of seasons as we pass from Autumn to Winter at this moment of your celebration.

A reminder that BP in the last 2 months has given out EPs at the start of the month right away...like a marker…and then…waiting.

None for me either (not that I really expected anything). Big congrats to all of you who did!

I got one finalist, Bubble Up!
Nice surprise! :-)

jo ann c.

11/30/2013 11:17:33 AM

Every month, it's the same darned thing... if you go to Contests > Finalists, you only find the previous month's list in the winner's area. If you go to the home page for BP and click on the Contest Heading, it will drop down for a "Photography Contest" info box. To the right is a past winner picture with "Recent Winners and Finalists" + "
All Previous Winners and Previous Finalists" Clicking on THAT recent finalists will get you the one you want.

Why would they want Finalist links to result in two different months???!!!!

Here is the list of October 2013 Finalists....
http://www.betterphoto.com/gallery/dynoGall2.asp?catID=59628

11/30/2013 11:49:26 AM

Sort of an impression as well as a question... Has anyone else noticed that Black & White (or monochromatic) images are a larger percentage of EPs, Finalists, and Winners, lately? It's sort of retro (and in many cases, very cool.)
