61 .  Photos look soft after uploading.
Does anyone else think their photos look soft and lose detail after uploading to BP. When I look at my originals and then the same image I've uploaded to BP there is a big difference. Am I doing something wrong?

12/21/2013 7:00:10 AM

What size images are you uploading at BP, Nicholas? I make it a point to upload 800 ppi on the wider side and sharpening is my last step in post processing before saving it as a Tif file. This way the images look the same on my hard drive as on BP site. Hope this helps.

To add onto Usman's comment…several years ago BP made a statement in the forum about the 800 pixel restriction. I think their upload instructions still mention 1600 pixels, but their process will reduce it to 800 pixels on the long side, for display. Rather than letting the BP process downsize the image, they recommended BP members resize to 800 pixels and sharpen…as Usman has said. I tried to search thru the forum for this thread on the resizing, but couldn't find it.

In the same BP forum thread, BP had also suggested uploading as TIF, because they would appear slightly better than JPG. But over the years, I don't think this is as applicable, although I still upload as TIF.

You can do some easy experiments. Upload an image at 2500 pixels, then another at 1600 pixels, and finally at 800 pixels (and be sure to sharpen the 800 version). Do one as JPG and another as TIF, then open them up in browser tabs and compare side-by-side.

  62 .  Outdoor Nativity Pageant
I hope to go to an outdoor nativity pageant and would like to know if anyone can give me some tips. I already know to use my tripod and wear warms clothes... it is the Great White North who know.. eh. LOL Please give me a tip or two and I'll consider that my Christmas present from you. :) Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to whoever reads this. May you receive heaven's best!!!

12/19/2013 10:41:14 PM

Take some extra camera batteries with you and keep them in your pocket (preferably zippered pocket close to your body. Also, carry, in case you need one, a cover for your camera and lens, like a rain cover, or you can use a plain shower cap, to keep the rain, snow, sleet, freezing fog out, when you are not shooting. If you are going to be shooting, you could cut a whole the shape of the front of your lens, put a rubber band on to hold it in place, which will help to keep rain, etc. out. Wear as many layers as you are comfortable with, including a warm hat. If you do not own a pair of polartech gloves-you can purchase some inexpensive ones at national brand stores--, cut just the tips of the fingers of the right glove off that you will need to operate your camera. Lastly, take someone with you, if possible-safety in numbers; cell phone if possible; don't leave home without telling a family member, good friend, where you will be and what time you are expecting to be back. Have Fun!

12/20/2013 10:16:11 AM

Thanks Nancy for the excellent advice.

I won't bother trying to photographing it if it's raining but will still go if just cold. The glove idea is brilliant as I have the ones with all fingers cut out and the fold over mitt but if I just had the shutter finger and thumb cut off that would work great for me.

I don't do a lot of photography at night as I feel it is not safe. My one Christmas post this year is from last year with me holding an umbrella in 7km winds, using my glove on a low lamp post as a tripod... in a semi safe area but won't do it again. It's a miracle I got a shot in at all so I am very pleased with it.

The pageant will have many other people there so it will be a safe environment.

Victoria has a few excellent night time, male photographers and I enjoy their images so much but would not tackle the winter, dark & cold conditions they do. It's a shame that this world is not safe place for woman to come and go as they please.

Just bought a cell phone and it is so new to me I forget to take it with me. LOL

Thanks again for taking the time to reply to my question.

Happy Shooting, Sharon

12/20/2013 12:40:49 PM

I also wonder what would be the best camera settings for slow moving people outdoors in the dark with pageant lighting as for a play. Please share some tips with me... or just use special night settings on camera and not more technical ones?

Here are some sample photos that others have taken...

http://christmasnativity.ca/photo-gallery

12/20/2013 12:45:55 PM

If you want to freeze slow moving action, 1/125 should be enough. A high ISO, around 800+. You would either need a long zoom lens (if you are further away from the stage, or get as close as possible)with a wide angle zoom. It wouldn't hurt to review your camera manual for settings, as I do not know what camera you will use, or how far you will be from your subject. Also, the lighting on the stage will affect your settings. If you could get their early and meter some shots, that would be ideal, but sometimes that cannot happen for various reasons. For my camera, (5D2), if close using Canon 24-70mm, I might try using Tv to regulate the speed of the shutter@70mm, with a fairly high ISO to stop action, without blowing out highlights. But read your manual, as only you know how to incorporate all the different settings to fit your camera and lens. Study now a few days before the show and try some shots at night at home in similar lighting, like inside in a dark room shooting into a lighter room.

12/20/2013 3:30:22 PM

Thank you again Nancy. I will try out what you've suggested. I only know how to shoot in AV but will experiment with both my lenses... just kit lenses and go from there. If it doesn't stop raining I won't be going... which would be a shame as they put on such a lovely show for a gift to the city of Victoria every year. Lost my manual but have it downloaded on my computer. I will show you the results if I get some shots in. Thanks again, Sharon

12/20/2013 4:25:50 PM

I miss Victoria. You love in a beautiful city! I used to live in the Seattle area, and ride the ferry over.

  63 .  Contests
I have seen wonderful (just my opinion) and amazing photos (my opinion only) over looked. And I have seen photos that lack imagination, resemble mass produced greeting cards, simple and blurry etc photos celebrated as contest winners. (simply my opinion).

Are contest winners only considered if they have taken BP photography courses?

thank you for your time

12/19/2013 3:04:37 AM

Nope, I don't think so. I have yet to take a class and have been fortunate to get a few badges over the years and I happen to live on the other side of World too.

And also I do get inspired from all the Winners, some more than the others, but all are badge worthy (just my opinion).

UB.

12/19/2013 6:20:51 AM

I also have never taken any classes and through the years have won several times and had many finalists. It is a mystery to us how they do the picking...it's just a contest, it isn't like we actually win anything anymore...back when I joined BP was free and you could win a years membership if you got a 2nd place,a camera bag for 1st place and a deluxe website if you got a grand prize winner..

MaryAnne, similar to Usman and Jill, I have not taken any classes and have gotten some finalists and gold medals. Likewise, I know of others that have taken 5+ classes, without getting many finalists or gold medals.

12/19/2013 10:29:29 AM

I agreement with Usman, Jill and Ken. Have never taken a class and received Gold, finalist and POTD. In my opinion the Judges are doing great at picking the winners and finalists. To me they are always well worth the awards they received.

12/19/2013 12:49:16 PM

I have not taken any classes, either, and I've got a few 2nd places, lots of finalists and a couple of staff favorites. Still, I've noticed that a lot has changed this year: e.g. in the beginning of 2013 I got editors' picks for almost every image, while so far, I've got only 2 for November and none for December. Also, I agree that some badge winning photos are not very original and/or creative and some are not techically perfect but, on the other hand, some are...

12/19/2013 1:24:57 PM

Same here. Never any classes and yet I've had a lot of finalists and some winners, too. Definitely the courses have nothing to do with it.
We would all agree with you that many great images are passed over and some that maybe aren't so great move on to gold, but as they always say, it's all subjective.

12/19/2013 5:31:20 PM

I am so thankful to read that feedback.

Thank you for taking the time to respond to my post!

Happy Holidays!

12/21/2013 9:03:27 AM

I was wondering the same thing and am glad to see the responses. I have won several EPs and a couple of 2nd places but nothing lately. The judging has definitely changed but can't see any rhyme or reason. While I see many wonderful photos being selected I do notice the same thing...that many seem to be blurry, have lots of noise, are over saturated, have poor composition, etc.. I don't want to criticize and give credit to anyone who even enters the contests but something is definitely wrong. I haven't spoken up until now because I didn't want to sound like "sour grapes". I realize that everyone always has room for improvement and it helps us to strive to get better and better no matter how good we are at our craft but it would also help to know why excellent photos are passed over. Is there something we are missing? I am wondering if there is a change in staff ...maybe fewer staff to judge or less experienced. Oh well.

1/19/2014 7:00:12 PM

I have taken many classes and have only won three finalist awards in four years and Editor's Picks but those have become few and far between. I haven't been able to figure out why the change so if someone can explain it, I'd appreciate it.

1/21/2014 8:40:25 PM

  Thanks Betty Ann.

1/19/2014 7:00:12 PM:
I agree. "maybe fewer staff to judge or less experience"

12/19/2013 8:42:40 AM
I have heard the same, but it no longer happens.

Now I have won badges and am a finalist (but of all the photos I have posted - they not my best shots by far)

2/1/2014 11:21:29 AM

  Thanks Jill.

12/19/2013 8:42:40 AM

"I joined BP was free and you could win a years membership if you got a 2nd place,a camera bag for 1st place and a deluxe website if you got a grand prize winner.."

Good to know.

2/1/2014 11:24:23 AM

Hi MaryAnne. I've never taken a class through BP but I did sign up for a web site last year. I've had 2nd place winner, a few POTD and many finalists. No rhyme or reason to the judging this past year. I rarely had an entry without an EP and now I receive just a few per month. My personal rule of thumb is that I only enter what I think deserves at least and EP.

2/15/2014 4:41:27 AM

Since posting my question I have have had quite a few recognitions. It's so funny because I sell my work in art galleries that I as starting to think that maybe my work was too artistic compared to others here.

thanks for your response.

2/15/2014 7:31:00 AM

I was also worried because I do not do staged photos. Most of my photos are dynamic. I was seeing a lot of what I consider typical photos eg. a baby in a hand and forearm - an over used concept. I curate and I like to see and create photos that make people want to look at them for more than a glance. A photo that is not obvious in a single moment.

I was considering moving to a different site.

But things have changed the more I participate in explaining my purpose, my love of irony, my intentions and my mantra, the more I have been understood.

  64 .  November Countdown
Season's Greetings! May your holidays be filled with warmth and joy, and just hopefully, a few BP medals thrown in ;)

This monthly thread is intended to let us share our one favorite image from our entries last month -- November. Your personal favorite, or maybe your most hopeful, or your proudest photographic achievement that month, etc.; perhaps it isn't always the image that you *think* might potentially go on to Finalist or better, and it may not be an image the BP Judges are drawn to! It isn't about predicting a Finalist/Winner (although that's a fun trick when it happens here!); it is about sharing your personal best/favorite image.

So give your favorite a showcase here, tell us why you picked it, and join us in the countdown... Best of luck to everyone in the November contest results!

++++++++++++++++++
Some helpful hints for attaching photos into a BP Forum Thread, if you're unfamiliar with the process:

1) Sign into BP. IF YOU HAVEN'T entered the Contest for today, you can use the "Photo ID" method to pull an existing image (from your Member Center) into your Reply here. This avoids a duplicate image upload to your Member Center. Note the Photo ID# of the image you wish to include here (visible in your Member Center) then return to this thread, click Respond, enter the text of your reply, and choose "1" from the images-to-attach drop-down (even though you won't actually be uploading a file.) Click Submit; at the next screen, populate the "Photo ID" field shown over at the right. Skip the other text fields on that screen, check the boxes at the bottom, and Submit.

2) IF YOU HAVE ALREADY entered the Contest for today, you can't use the Photo ID method *today*. Either wait until tomorrow to reply here first, or upload a copy of the image (from your PC) and attach to this thread. This produces a duplicate image in your Member Center; however, you don't have to make that duplicate visible in your Gallery.

If you're uploading a duplicate, I suggest titling it "For Forum" so it stands out in your Member Center, for easier housecleaning later on. This can also help nudge BP viewers to go find the original image in your gallery, if they want to leave a comment. Likewise, if you want to add a comment to a photo seen here, first try to tell if it is a duplicate upload. As a courtesy, try to find the original image in the member's gallery and leave your comment there instead of on the duplicate... which may one day be deleted.

  Fjords of Chicago
Fjords of Chicago
Playing around with another image of the Aqua Tower in Chicago. The undulating balconies, different on
every floor, reminded me (when viewed at this steep upward angle) of a topographical map, suggesting
rolling hills, or a constructed landscape viewed from "above and at an angle." Windows then,
reflecting blue sky, became lakes or fjords within the hills. (I tinted them all a sky blue to heighten the effect.)

I enjoyed a wonderful photography visit to Chicago in October, which formed the basis of most of my November entries. I was slightly obsessed with this hotel/condo tower...!

This is my favorite image from November. It rarely rains here in the Mojave desert, but when I shot this image, we had record rainfall that lasted for weeks, flooding many areas. I took a drive to the Littlerock Dam which normally doesn't have alot of water in it and found picnic tables out in the water...Probably something I will not ever see again!

66 .  Selling image? Contacted by buyer.
Just a question about selling prints. Somebody emailed me and gave me their phone number to contact them. They saw one of my photos here and asked what I would charge for a large print. I've never sold a photo before so I'm curious. I've had photos published but all That I ask for is a photo credit. What about water marking or signing to prevent copying the image? Thanks for any input.

  67 .  Is wedding photography different ?
I am a wedding photographer and I wanted to ask a question: is wedding photography different from nature photography and what kind of camera and things need for other photography fields ??

Why not! wedding photography and nature photography both are different. For best photography if you wan to capture any photo then we should buy high pixel camera and high quality features.

1/11/2014 3:13:27 AM

I have 30 years of experience. High Pixel cameras sound impressive but I have an old Canon G5 (5 megs) and I can still blow up photos to over 16x20 and have them look sharp. I also have a Lumix camera, because the shape of the lens (altho its over 12 megs) any photos over 8x12 are not as crisp as the 5 megs.

There are so many factors that come into play - its not just high pixel.

Wedding photography is staged photography. And in my opinion very stressful, because it is that brides special day and there is no room for error.

Nature photography in some cases, is more "natural" and is not staged.

Go to a very reputable camera store that deals with professional cameras and ask a representative who has many years of experience and she/he will guide you. There are many options available to you.

1/15/2014 2:29:26 AM

  Hi Angela,

Wedding photography is primarily different from nature photography in that you're photographing people and portraits at weddings, as opposed to landscapes and nature. The digital camera you choose should be capable of producing large prints if your customer wants them. You should also invest in a couple of good lenses for portraiture, perhaps a 50mm f/1.8 or f/2.8, and a zoom lens.

MaryAnne is correct that it's the bride's special day and there's no room for error. There's no opportunity to re-shoot the event. A wedding often consists of posed portraits as well as capturing moments as they happen, such as the first kiss as bride and groom, couples' dance at the reception, etc. Best of luck!

I view Wedding photography much like Sports photography as it can be really fast paced and you have to be ready to capture a moment when it happens, so I would opt for something that does well with multiple frames capability. I shoot a lot of portraits, nature/landscapes & low light concert photography so I prefer a full frame camera. I dont think this matters as much for weddings but speed/quality is what I would consider. You also need 2 of everything in case something fails and having a second camera with a different lens is handy as well. If your walking around shooting portraits with your 50/85mm and then you see some kids chasing a frog across the lawn, you can zoom in with a 70-200mm on the 2nd camera and get the shot :) Nature photography is much slower and deliberate. Setting up the tripod and waiting for the light or climbing something to get a better perspective and of course early mornings & late evenings times for the best light. I also shoot many different settings with landscape using different filters and white balance, different shutter speeds for waterfalls and of course HDR as well. Thats my .02 - Love in Light, Carlton

Does anyone know what is the process the judges use now for the contests? I used to get quite a few editor's picks but now maybe have gotten 5 in the last several months. I no longer enter one a day but don't think I have became a worst photographer than I was before and was wondering what is the judges' process now. Thanks and wishing everyone happy holidays and a great new year! ~April

Also, they've only gone thru Nov 12th, and Dec 1st. So, if you uploaded contest photos after Nov 12th, they're still in the running for an EP. That's one of the recent changes contest changes they've made; they pick EPs slower now, and often go thru many days all at once.

The bar has been raised a fair bit as far as EP stamping is concerned. They want us to push more, which is good for many of us, me thinks ;)

I agree with Usman. I like the change as far as EPs not being given out as freely. It seemed in the past anything and everything got an EPs. This way it makes it more of a challenge for me.

The bar should never have been lowered, if it was. With such a drastic change, it makes me wonder if my images they chose were actually any good or were they just handing these things out to anyone. I don't know if there are new judges or why such a big change. I remember when I first joined BetterPhoto it was same group of people who received the EPs etc. That's not saying that it wasn't deserved or earned, but then it opened up and you saw different photographers with different styles that could be appreciated and learned from. I thought BP became a much more encouraging and welcoming place in the last few years than it had been when I first joined. I remember receiving "critiques" telling me I should throw my camera away, but I was just beginning and I don't live in an area where I can just walk out the door and point and shoot so I learned to take those with a grain of salt. What I miss most about the EPs is not the little ribbon but the feedback I received not only from the judges but also other BP photographers who saw my image in the contest link. ~April

12/14/2013 6:58:47 AM

  Hi Natural Abstract,
I happen to KNOW that you are an excellent photographer. I have had a lot of fun with the contest and I have noticed that just entering does not guarantee an EP. It annoys me to some extent as well. One member has been kind enough to give me real constructive advice and he was right.
I think you do an excellent job with the subject matter you have available. I can only speak for me but I have grown as a photographer, have gotten some great ideas at BP, but would like some honest advice on how to improve. I would also like to know how some photos are done. I have inquired and some people respond but most do not share. That would be nice. Ken Smith and a couple of others have been very, very helpful to me. Debra Harter was wonderful but I don't think she is doing BP any more. If I was going to give you advice, I would say, don't give up. You are too good to quit. Besides, what have you got to lose? Well, maybe confidence.... I struggled with that but maybe we need to do photography for OURSELVES and what WE like.

Thanks Harriet, I agree with you - the contests are fun and entering doesn't guarantee anything. My main concern is BP not going back to the way it was when it was very clique-y - I should tell you sometime my story about my first acceptance to the High & Dry, oh one lady here did not like at all and neither did all her friends and she had a lot of friends, and I became just a running joke in all their comments on their own images. That was one time I thought about quitting. They had convinced me that image was so bad I was too embarrassed to even go to the H&D reception that year. But that was 2006. In the last few years tho it seemed people were more welcoming and gave constructive feedback whether they liked the subject matter or not. I can get a website anywhere, the community of fellow photographers is another story ~April

12/14/2013 2:36:25 PM

I hate hearing that, April. I know it sometimes seems pretty much ruled by cliques, but I don't think it's always their intent to be like that, although it seems you must have run up against a particularly mean bunch. Some people tend to stick with their own group based on nothing more than what time of day they post. I'm sure there are a lot of people like me who just can't do a lot of typing. (bad hands)..I sure did notice a lot of difference when I couldn't do much commenting anymore. If I get 3 or 4 a day it's unusual. I hope your experience this time will be much better.

12/14/2013 3:06:56 PM

Because of you, April, I am now doing BP. I am sorry about your experience with H&D. I have not figured this one out, yet. Civility is a lost art for some people. I have not experienced this at BP but I have only been in it for about three years at the most. If it was as you described, then I would not want it to go back to that. What some people do not realize is that one's art (and photography is art) is a reflection of themselves. The artist bares his soul, so to speak, and cruelty is very hurtful. The "do unto others" is only FOR others to abide by for some people. Hang in there. We need to go on a road trip together sometime.

Harriet, I'm so glad you enjoy BP. Had those people been representative of the majority of people here I never would recommend it to anyone but they are not, they are just the loudest. The funny thing about that first H&D was Jane always tells me that was one of her all-time favorites, which I've always thought was strange because at that time I was just a little museum student who didn't know anything and entered it on a dare. We should go on a road trip sometime. I take my ESL test this Thursday and I can finally breathe again and think of stuff other than languages. ~April

12/14/2013 4:48:02 PM

I don't comment on photo's like I used to. I don't have as much time as before but when I first joined BP I found it to be a very welcoming, encouraging, helpful place to be. That's why I have stayed. I must say though, I am in a rut when it comes to photography. I have felt uninspired for a while now. I hope that goes away soon.

12/17/2013 2:49:29 AM

Without sounding like Scrooge at Christmas time, I am frustrated because I don't see how all the photos can be judged with less than 10 days left in this month. As far as I can tell, the only EP's are on 12-1-13. As for November, I can't tell how far along they are here either. I guess after Christmas they will pull a judge-a-thon and finish up November and spend all of January doing December. I am not complaining about not getting EP's because I don't KNOW if my photos made it or not. It is like taking a test and never knowing if you passed or failed. Maybe they are in file 13.

I agree, Harriet, that is what's so frustrating - not knowing if they are even looking. I got one for November, and that wasn't my longhorns from Johnson City which is a pretty straightforward photograph and I thought if I had a chance that would have been it. I know some people complained that too many EPs were being given, but it's seems like they have now swung to the opposite end of the pendulum. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to their process. ~April

12/22/2013 7:51:11 AM

Should we start a new thread for December Editors picks? It doesn't look like they have given out many and this thread seems to be about other subject matter?

12/25/2013 1:52:30 PM

The only issue I see with the "pushing ourselves more" to be worthy of receiving nods from Judges, is that I have no idea now WHY I do or do not get an EP.

I do know that my skills are always growing, or so I believe - but who knows! So, what exactly is it that I need to improve? Is it my camera work or my post-production skill that needs work?

Thank Heaven that I still love photography - despite a lack of encouragement from BP. I'm pretty fond of my fellow members, too.

12/26/2013 7:20:36 PM

I agree with all that is being said here. I have noticed at least 3 new PRO photographers (not instructors) with new pro websites, that have gotten recognition on BP, whether EP, or photo prominently displayed , not just listed, on those new "what is trending now on BP" pages.
Also, I have not received any EPs for December at all, but, at this point, I think it is just business as usual! IMO, not a sound business practice. When businesses start ignoring their largest population, the END is near.

Here it is January 5th and not a single December EFP...

1/5/2014 7:31:01 AM

Well, I just got one for JANUARY 2nd! I had one on 12/1 also and nothing in between. Maybe they are going to skip December and go right straight to January.

1/5/2014 9:00:32 AM

Just got one for January 1st but nothing in Dec yet.

1/5/2014 12:39:20 PM

That's the same for me, Beatriz. One for January 1, none yet for December.

I actually just came back to say that I just got an email from someone who had major computer problems for several months and couldn't enter. She was checking in occasionally but not really paying attention. When she got one for January 1, she deleted all her December entries because she had no EP's. Now that is sad. And I wonder how often it happens?

1/5/2014 1:26:04 PM

So, does anyone have an expaination for "editor 1st pics" in Dec? How can there only be pics on the 1st and 31st? It's like the judges decided to take the whole month off!
I've been a member of this site since 2008 and it appears this will be my last...............

Garret, I doubt you'll hear from BP staff, if you're looking for an explanation. You mentioned EPs for the 31st. I haven't seen any for that date…just the first of Dec, and the 1-2 of Jan.

As for an explanation…and it's only a speculation. BP uses different people for each month. The December team (or person) is really, really behind, whereas the January team has already started.

But we've seen this often lately…they start the new month, but just for a day or two, then return to the preceding month.

Again, it would be nice for BP to chime in on their EP process. For me personally, I'd love to see a consistent EP rate (maybe 50%) and awarding them NLT than one week after contest date. They kinda used to do this a couple of years ago, but increasingly it's been a mad dash to the contest finish line.

Clarification…award EPs one week after the contest date; e.g., for contest entries on the 10th of January, award EPs NLT the 17th of Jan. For entries on the 11th, it'd be 18th of Jan.

1/5/2014 3:50:47 PM

I did not get any EPs at all for December, and they skippped me altogether the last 1/2 of November. I, also had problems trying to enter the last part of December, so I didn't enter my photo on the 31st. I am going to slow way down-not entering everyday anymore, and do some of the photo projects I have been putting off for too long. BP just doesn't seem to care anymore.

Nancy, don't get discouraged. BP has only awarded EPs for the first day of December. There are still 30 days to go, for December EPs. We are all in the same boat. Have fun with your projects, but toss in a photo every now and then, to the contest. BP is much more than just the management, it's the people that comprise the community. And I'm sure they care.

1/5/2014 7:36:52 PM

Thanks, Garret. I hadn't seen any EPs except for Dec 1st. And no one else had reported any on this forum. Maybe we'll see more over the next few days.

1/5/2014 7:54:29 PM

Since they are so far behind, it would be less confusing if we always mentioned the month when we talk about the EPs. I'm interested in Garret's latest statement - what month and what is your source? I'm not at all doubting you - I'm just completely confused. I have nothing at all for December and only one for January and that was for the 1st. The November Winners finally came out. Are you saying you have seen EP's for images entered in the contest on December 26-31?

Garret, I did see some EPs on photos that were time stamped in late December, but it's unclear if they were uploaded on Jan 1st or 2nd. It's possible they were uploaded in December, then entered into the contest on Jan 1st or 2nd, when they handed out the Jan EPs. Hopefully someone will chime in on this forum, if they entered these photos into the contest in December.

1/5/2014 8:02:31 PM

I entered a Nov 7 upload instead of a new upload on January 1 when they were having such big server problems and no one could get in. It did not have an EP but does now. I'm willing to bet lots of others did, too, as it seemed to be the only way to get an Jan 1 entry in.

1/5/2014 8:09:16 PM

So far, I've found maybe 3 images that were uploaded on 01/01 - all within minutes of midnight. All the others for January seem to have been uploaded in December, but entered on the 1st. That's what I ended up doing. It looks as though things were fixed by the the 2nd.

Here's where the "Recent EPs" gallery is located...
http://www.betterphoto.com/gallery/editors-first-pick-photos-members.asp?pageID=4&rows=12

Btw, I like that the gallery now contains only the most recent in descending order instead of skipping around willy-nilly. I'm not really happy about not seeing my images anywhere amongst them. Oh, well.

1/5/2014 9:05:41 PM

If my eyes haven't deceived me, according to the latest EP's Dec. is through! What the heck...no EP's for me for Nov. and now none for Dec. I guess it is really time to think about wrapping this place up!

1/5/2014 9:37:44 PM

This confusion is one of the reasons that I add the monthDay (and category) at the end of my description. And, Joannie - I can't tell if December EPs are finished or not because of all the judge-jumping around.

This is like sending out November statements in January, plus some January invoices, before finishing the billing for most of December. And none of it has the actual date the work done recorded on the paperwork.

1/5/2014 11:39:05 PM

As far as I can tell, comparing some of the 12/31 EPs shown in the chronological list with the current Recent list, there *have* been a few EPs awarded for late December entries. The few I looked at were by photographers without galleries, so posting in the forum may not be an option for them. Since some members do delete entries which haven't gotten EPs, it would be really helpful if BP could share its process for the first stage of contest picking, or somehow let everyone know when that stage is complete for a given month.

1/6/2014 7:17:41 AM

I've learned not to delete my images until the finalist come out! There's no tell what is going on until the finalists come out!

1/6/2014 9:19:33 AM

No reason to delete them at all. Just go and uncheck the box so they won't be seen in your gallery, but are still in the data base.

1/6/2014 9:42:06 AM

Carylon, I don't want all those pics in my gallery, too much! But I do save my very favorite ones! :-)

1/6/2014 10:08:16 AM

They won't show in your gallery if you uncheck the box. You can have as many as you want in your pool, just as long as less than 1000 show.

1/6/2014 11:35:09 AM

I just got another JANUARY EP for the 3rd. I have written to Kerry Drager asking for some clarification about December. Let's wait and see what he (or whoever answers) says. In the meantime, we need a January EP thread.

1/6/2014 1:28:05 PM

Just got this email from BP.. I'll be shocked if none of my San Francisco shots get EP's... The wait continues....

Hello Garret,
Thank you for your support of BetterPhoto and the monthly Contest. Editor's Picks are still being awarded, although sometimes it takes a bit longer to get the Editor's Picks posted. Also, our judges may take a few days off from time to time - including during the holidays. If that happens, just know that we'll catch up as soon as possible, as evidenced in Dec.
Of course, the end result of each contest is always the same ... the exciting announcements of Finalists and Winners coming late each month.

Thank you and Happy Shooting!

Hang in there, BetterPhoto friends. The judges are just getting back into action after the holidays, and only 2 pages have been judged. As they progress, we're sure you'll see a lot more photos getting EPs.

1/2-Ancient Sculptures.

I don't see a January forum posted, so am posting it here.

1/6/2014 6:36:34 PM

Kerry, Kerry, he's our man.... :-)

1/6/2014 6:39:35 PM

Thanks for the response, Kerry! But, the order of the picking is a little confusing. It used to be chronological, while now it appears that judging is going backwards from the 31st. When people see EPs dated the last day of the month, it gives the impression that the judging for the month is finished. Is this a new trend, or an anomaly? Thanks!

1/6/2014 6:49:01 PM

Thanks, Kerry. Your response is much appreciated. This is all very confusing ... :)

1/6/2014 7:14:26 PM

  Marie (Nancy) and others,
Please do not despair. What those posting to this forum have been saying is that BP has NOT looked at the December entries beyond, at most, the first day or two of that month. Please do not think: "They skipped all of my December entries." That is not true for anyone at this point in time. It IS true that a few EPs have been given out for the first 1-3 days of January. But this has long been a pattern here - a new judge or editor starting a new month before his or her colleague has finished the old one. It's confusing and irritating and frustrating and maddening, but that's just the way it is. And in this case it has been said repeatedly that the December entries have NOT been looked at beyond the first day or so, but they will be in good time. Most of all, DO NOT DELETE your entries until after the Finalists for that month come out. The editors have even been known to go back and give a few EPs AFTER they have apparently been all the way through someone's entries. Hang in there and keep on entering.

1/6/2014 7:26:58 PM

"Hang in there and keep on entering." I am with you wholeheartedly, Nikki.

UB.

1/6/2014 11:07:09 PM

I just got another one for January and still nothing after December 1 for that month. NOW I'M EVEN MORE CONFUSED than ever! WHAT happened to DECEMBER??? If they intend to skip the entire month, then I'm re entering every darn shot and I don't want to hear a word about no resubmits! Somebody PLEASE mention DECEMBER's missing EPs!!!!

1/7/2014 2:39:04 PM

  Well said, Nikki.

1/7/2014 2:39:06 PM

At least with December, there is still a chance that Joannie and I still have a chance.

If Carolyn is being swamped with EPs on her January entries already, it means that my lack of them means it's too late for an EP on any of the 6 entries.

We are encouraged to hang in there and keep entering because things are going to improve but... WHEN?

1/7/2014 4:00:00 PM

I don't know that I ever heard the word "improve" from headquarters! :-)

1/7/2014 4:53:25 PM

It seems through the years that the judges check pictures in alphabetical order! I always know if Carolyn posts and EP than I go look at my gallery to see if I have one! She has already posted 3 EP's for Jan.! I have none for Dec. and so far none for Jan.! Just saying!

1/7/2014 5:01:47 PM

I only have one for December. January I have one for the 2nd, 3rd and 4th..Couldn't post on the first.
Surely they aren't done with December. I can't believe they would skip almost an entire month. It IS true that there are some for the end of December with EPs. Wonder why we're confused, anyone??

1/7/2014 5:06:39 PM

In the survey that came out today I stated very clearly that I'd like to see BP disclosing regularly and openly information on their process to give EPs.
May be if everyone would use this survey as a way to get this message to BP it would amplify our voices!
Just an idea.
Btw I got EPs for Jan1-3 but still nothing for December.

1/7/2014 5:32:51 PM

I also replied to their survey and brought out some issues (including the lack of EPs for December). I used the 50-dollar discount code (it seems all people got it: at least my father did, and he did not have a gallery on BP any more) to renew my gallery for a year... and my father did it too... at least this was nice!

1/7/2014 10:55:10 PM

Now it seems that they changed the rules of that dicount... Boooo!

1/8/2014 6:37:14 AM

After getting JIm's email this morning I tried to use it for the buy one get one free also and now you cannot do it...Your Dad is lucky...Just one more confusing issue with BP I guess...I tried it and now they still want you to pay for one year and give you one for free...which is ok, but why confuse folks with even bringing up the useless coupon. I cannot afford classes even with the discount and would have gladly used the $50.00 to renew just for a year.

1/8/2014 8:59:37 AM

I renewed in November, I think. I figured that by do the two year renewal things could really get fouled up. I will take my chances on one year at a time. This might be a wake up call to the powers that be . If they can't handle the contest in a timely fashion, what makes one think that the records can be kept straight? The slip up in the email is not good business and BP, after all, is a business.

1/8/2014 9:16:53 AM

I often took advantage of the 2-fer, which is why my subscription is good until April 2015.

An explanation email "Whoop! I goofed Kathy" arrived this morning about the $50 coupon. My budget even with that discount does not allow for the classes. And, I had missed the earlier mention about a "green drink" but the email does clarify that info.

Btw, I had taken that 2-week course on "Snow Photography" from Jim Zuckerman for $99. It was terrific, but cash flow has been redirected and even that option has to be tabled for awhile. It doesn't look as though the $50 discount can be used on the short courses, anyway.

1/8/2014 9:34:42 AM

Harriet said: "We are encouraged to hang in there and keep entering because things are going to improve but... WHEN?"

I was the one who said, "Hang in there and keep entering," and it was intended specifically to encourage those who were assuming that their December and January entries had been skipped and were, therefore, not worthy. I have entered every day in January and I entered 28 days in December. I have one EP to show for it - so far :) I will not delete entries until after the finalists for that month are announced.

1/9/2014 6:15:07 PM

Yes, I did ask "When?" I am one of the members who was wondering if the month had been skipped, so I feel qualified in asking. I assume that BP is still encouraging people to enter the contest because it is still listed in the topics in the forum. Now, I would still like to know "WHEN?" the judging will even begin much less get caught up. I taught 40 years. If I had given a test and waited three weeks to even begin grading them and let the results be known almost a month later, I would not have kept my job. I continue to enter because to my knowledge this is the only site that has a contest and up until a few months ago, I thoroughly enjoyed the competition. If there are stipulations to be met by asking "WHEN" then I was not aware of them. Perhaps targeting a "specific" population needs to be stated rather than implied. I have had to do some encouraging lately myself but can't encourage my friends to join until BP resumes some professionalism.

1/9/2014 6:49:25 PM

You're right, Nikki. Harriet, they say they will get to them, so I assume they will.

1/9/2014 6:51:06 PM

I think I've been misunderstood, Harriet. I was certainly not taking you to task for asking "when?" and as a former teacher myself, I absolutely agree. I just did not want you or anyone else to assume I was in any way speaking about BP in general when I said "hang in there". My comments were intended only and specifically to say that I do NOT think the December EP selection has been completed or even close to completed and I do think they will go back and do it - somehow. So do not delete December entries.
Personally, I think the inconsistency and delays are maddening and frustrating and a few other things besides. But I can't do anything about them, so I just keep playing the game and getting my pleasure from viewing others' work, from reading comments on my own work when it catches someone's eye, from the very helpful critiques in the FFFP Club, and from those Finalists that may eventually come my way if and when they do.

1/9/2014 7:00:19 PM

I'm certainly hoping that BP is taking note of all this pissing, moaning, and, crankiness it's creating.......

1/9/2014 7:09:20 PM

  Yes Caroly, but WHEN? :-)

1/9/2014 7:09:29 PM

I still think a lot of us would be much happier if the judging schedule were more consistent.

We may not like the long delays, but we do understand travels and work and other reasons (well, sort of... not in any other job on Earth, but that's another issue.)

Just don't start a new month until all the Judges have completed their assignments for the current (or latest still open) Contest. And don't bounce around. I hate checking and rechecking every one of my entries every time somebody posts that they got a new EP. It's demoralizing and annoying as all get-out.

1/9/2014 7:14:56 PM

Yup, everytime I see an email, "Response to question by Jill", the first thing I do is check my gallery....then I sigh heavily....

1/9/2014 7:20:36 PM

One EP each on the first day of Dec & Jan is all I have to show for now. But I am not deleting any of the non-EP images of Dec and Jan just yet.
I am waiting to get the details on the BetterPhoto 2.0 from hopefully BP itself. Maybe that provide answers to our current queries, at least that's what I hope.
In the mean time, I am hanging on and playing along with full vigor, still getting inspired by many of your images which I often check every now and then.

UB.

1/9/2014 8:49:56 PM

Well, my best guess is that they are probably done with the January,14 EP selection for now and will move back to December,13 and between now and till 31st Jan, we’ll see the remaining EP’s for December and the subsequent badges, this is how, more or less, things turned out last month and also in the few months before(in the revised/changed scheme of things)....

1/9/2014 8:50:38 PM

I joined BP because of he "Photo Contest". If I wanted a web host to upload my photo's to, flickr has a much better layout and is FREE!! Probably a temp set back on BP's part. They sure have discouraged a few of their members with this glitch though..

1/9/2014 9:52:17 PM

Sorry, Nikki. I guess I did misunderstand. The previous post pegged it right on. I joined because of the contest as I use another site for posting my galleries. When all this started, I thought it was just a passing phase but as it seems to drag on and on, well, I guess it has worn on my nerves. Again, sorry for the misunderstanding.

1/10/2014 7:05:24 AM

  No problem, Harriet :)

1/10/2014 8:31:46 AM

Harriet, I came here mostly for the contest too - based on the encouragement of a handful of friends I'd made at other contest sites (all but one of whom have long since flown this coop, I must add). Needless to say, I'm not happy with what's happening (or not happening) here now either. My point, though, is that yes, other contest sites do exist. I'm a member of 3 others, all of which have contests to some degree or another plus the opportunity to interact with other members. BP rules say members aren't allowed to mention other websites here lest we be thrown out on our ears, but I'll be happy to clue you in if you send me an email.

1/10/2014 11:23:12 AM

ok, I am getting paranoid. I tried to contract you and the page would not allow me to do so. If you don't mind, please contact me. I will try later.

1/10/2014 12:48:43 PM

My big question right now is do I renew with the 2 for 1 not knowing what is going on with the contest or just let it ride. I have not gotten a single EP for the month of December and here it is Jan 10th...I hate spending our hard earned money if there is not going to be a contest anymore...I already have my own personal website at Smugmug and have had it for years...I joined for the contest and stayed because of all the great folks I have met here.

so did they just completely skip over December? If so, that's kinda irritating to put in mildly. I got out in -5 degrees to get some of the shots I entered. Maybe they're not great but they should at least get glanced at. ~April

1/11/2014 5:59:00 AM

They'll have to announce December Winners by the end of January, and for that, they need at least to look at 111 photos (1 Grand Winner, 10 1st places and 1000 2nd places), plus they need to look at least a couple of hundred more photos to give them Finalist badges, plus a hundred or more for Staff Favorites... Hopefully they'll start giving EPs soon, as if they hurry, then it becomes moe like a lottery (they'll overlook good photos, and it's not clear from whose photos they start from looking at: e.g. if it matters if you are taking courses, have bought a pro gallery, have been a member for 10 years or if your name starts with an A or if you upload your photos at a certain hour).

  Tia,

Is it me or does it seem that judging has come to a screeching halt?

Jane

1/11/2014 7:37:48 AM

Kerry offered this explanation on Jan 6th "Hang in there, BetterPhoto friends. The judges are just getting back into action after the holidays, and only 2 pages have been judged. As they progress, we're sure you'll see a lot more photos getting EPs." It's only been 5 days since that announcement.

There are not quite 2300 Recent Entries in that gallery (some of which were uploaded from years ago through this past Autumn-January. It's not clear how many were actually entered in December.

The problem always seems to get back to the same point... There shouldn't be one January Entry receiving an EP until the Judges finish December.

As a Marketing Tool, the Contest with the inconsistent procedures for nearly a year now, does not seem particularly effective.

1/11/2014 7:59:54 AM

Getting EPs takes more and more time.... a year ago it was normal to get an EP for a photo submitted 1-2 days ago, but now it often takes more than a month as they've only judged photos submitted in the beginning of December (plus some for January)... I agree that it's not good for the site: it is a sign that they don't care much of their members, and this may result in decreasing number of members and, as a result, worse financial results.

1/11/2014 8:30:29 AM

I agree with Tiia. I have been here since 2005 and am not thrilled with how things have been going for quite some time . Now I just read about someone who did the 2 for 1 and only got 1 year. Personally I cannot afford to pay $49.00 for a year here if they cannot get their act together enough to let us know what is really going on. That is more then I pay for my fully functional website!BP was free when I joined, then they started charging, which I understood..But then they almost doubled the price for a years membership. I almost left then, but some kind soul paid for me that year and since then I wait for the 2 for 1 sale.

1/11/2014 8:52:18 AM

Let’s face it, BP is a business and I guess their profit margin for Basic and Deluxe memberships must be decreasing?? This explains the perceived lack of "care" for those members. Seems all the BP classes available must be generating the bulk of revenue for BP.

  I have one for December:

I guess that's better than none.

1/12/2014 6:23:00 AM

I have three so far. I am still critical about the way the judging is being done. The hard work put into taking these photographs is being trivialized. I am glad to receive the EP's but I have not forgotten how late the judging is and, in my opinion, the unprofessionalism. I just want the old BP back.

1/12/2014 6:56:38 AM

Dear Harriet, I'm so sorry but you will probably never see the "old BP" again! I've been here for a little over 10 yrs now and once BP does something that is usually it! I feel your frustration very much, I believe my gallery here has fallen off the face of the earth! In my time here I've received 3 gold badges that took a very long time to get and I'm very proud of them! I have a whole bunch of finalist, also very proud of them but since November I've received no EP's...none in Nov., Dec. or Jan.! I'm just binding my time for now! I just wanted to let you know so you can use your energy for something important, not this contest!

1/12/2014 4:39:07 PM

  Joannie,
I am sorry about November but there's more to December (I guess) and January. There was a lady I talked to a couple of times ,as she answered a question or two for me, named Debra Harder. She is a fantastic photographer but she left BP because she felt it was taking up too much time. She may have a point. If things have not changed by the time I have to renew, I will not do another year. At my age it is not good for me to be upset. Thanks for the information.

1/12/2014 7:20:24 PM

I've got only two, for Dec. 2 and 8. And yes, Bob, I see Deb's work on FB and it's fabulous!

Change must be in progress, though - have y'all noticed that the comments boxes now have a "frame" around them that turns blue when you start to type? Be still my heart.

1/13/2014 2:51:52 PM

What's bothering me about all this is the fact that all 5 of my entries were submitted after Christmas.. With the BP judges falling so far behind, I'm beginning to realize most of the last minute entries are going to be overlooked..

just saying.........

1/14/2014 5:20:31 PM

Did you get the email about the new contest BP is going to start? How are they going to do a NEW contest when they are not even taking care of this one? Unless. the new contest will replace this one..... Part of the email promised "new and wonderful things" at BP. If it aint broken ....Maybe the contest is one you have to pay each time you enter and is open to anyone. When that happens, I am out. Perhaps I am borrowing trouble. But as far as I know there has not been any judging since the weekend. Just enough bones to keep the puppies happy.

1/14/2014 8:18:08 PM

I didn't get that email, Harriet. Or at least I don't think I did. I don't pay much attention to them - there are so many. I just delete. Anyone else?

1/14/2014 8:30:40 PM

No email about a new contest... Just one with a link that Jim received from his Dad (to inspiring pictures) and one about Green Drink. There were also a couple about the 2-Fer Gallery (my subscription has over a year left so I didn't bother reading those emails.)

Was the new contest info in one of those, Harriet?

1/14/2014 8:34:03 PM

I got it around noon CST today.
"Inspiring photos...and an urgent reminder" is the title. I reread the email and I am not sure it will be a contest but I am not sure that it won't either.

1/14/2014 9:00:44 PM

That's the one I got too (wasn't sure what it meant, either.)

1/14/2014 10:26:11 PM

I received the email yesterday. Didn't take it as a new contest. Jim called it Inspiration of the Week. I thought it would be something like the POTD. I could be wrong. I thought it was a good idea and loved the link he sent from his Dad for us to view. Those pictures were wonderful. Encourage everyone to look at them.

1/15/2014 2:37:18 AM

I agree with Tammy, I think it's just like a POTD idea or to showcase great BP photographers to inspire us.

1/15/2014 9:11:19 AM

I think you are correct. I am just getting a little paranoid and very distrustful. Not a nice state of mind. I just wish the BP I joined three years ago would come back.

1/15/2014 9:59:44 AM

We will never figure out the judging system here! I just found an EP for 12/4, Autumn Afternoon!

1/16/2014 5:39:55 PM

Either the judge found some inspiration or this has gotten so confusing that we cannot keep track of our entries. I think that the ladder is what they are hoping for. I am not entering for a week or so...partly because I am running out of photos but mostly because I am frustrated.

1/16/2014 7:40:11 PM

Did they ever get to December 13th? I'm getting tired of checking (especially, as my earlier ones in December didn't make the cut.)

1/16/2014 8:34:13 PM

Hi everyone. Jim here... aka Big Brother ;-)

(Martha, you made my wife and I laugh out loud).

Here's the deal...

When people take a BetterPhoto class, they get constructive feedback. We hold our instructors to the highest standards of kindness, encouragement, and inspiration.

The same standard applies to communications between members and communications from members to Team BetterPhoto. Our Terms and Conditions are clear about this.

So I'm going to make a habit of checking the forums and removing comments that don't hold up to this standard.

I'll also be HIGHLIGHTING comments that are exceptionally awesome.

Get 20 such highlighted comments and I will personally comment on one of your photos, if you like.

So really what I'm looking for is helpful, welcoming, encouraging commentary. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it when I see one member helping out other members.

I also love it when people are warm and friendly in their comments to me and my staff. As you would when commenting on another member's photo, you can give constructive, helpful feedback without being nasty, venting, or leading people away from BetterPhoto.

And I am not asking anyone has to be insincere. If you feel you really need to send us constructive feedback, send me or Kerry a private email. But know that if you swear in the email or anything like that, I won't respond.

So....

I've heard so many people say they check BetterPhoto every morning with their cup of coffee.

I'll be joining you... but with my green drink :)

1/18/2014 7:31:45 PM

Finally, finally, finally! We've all been waiting a very long time, Jim C., for you to talk to us! Thank you.

p.s., I check BP every morning with my Diet Pepsi, and, every afternoon with my cold beer... ;-)

1/18/2014 8:21:50 PM

Welcome to the thread, Jim! It is great to hear from you!

1/18/2014 8:29:17 PM

I am not easily rendered speechless. Actually I was just wondering what would be considered acceptable. I am glad to know that you are reading the posts and can only hope the concerns expressed here are taken into account. Best regards.

1/18/2014 8:48:51 PM

Oh Jim, we are all so eager to know the process of giving the EPs. As you know BP badges are a great positive reinforcer for all who want to improve their skills. And BP members are ALL in this category, as you know better than anyone else. So we would really appreciate if you could give us an indication on how/when to expect the EP awards throughout the month.
Looking forward to receiving your input!

1/18/2014 8:59:34 PM

Wow, thanks Jim for being here for us all. I welcome this change and am taking this as a new year gift from BP to its members. Well, I have already started loving BetterPhoto 2.0 ;)

  Hi Beatriz,

Every photo is viewed by one of my team members.

(and there are SIX rounds so every winning photo is viewed at least six times... often a lot more.)

Editor's Picks make it through Round 1. My original intention was to make it so people wanting to comment on photos can do so without having to weed through multiple versions of the same photo or photos that were not up to our first round standards.

We ARE behind at the moment... holidays... overload of work. It really takes A LOT to run this site! We've created hundreds of functions and thousands of pages, and you all have contributed millions of inspiring photos and lots of great community interactions. Every piece is a moving part and it takes a lot of management.

Good news, we are a small but mighty team and we are up to the task.

We are behind more than usual but I'm bringing in some extra help and we'll be back on track in no time.

My goal is to get it so that the previous month gets judged (most of it at least) before the current month gets judged... we do have to do some juggling back and forth between months because the current contestants want fast feedback too.

But no month or photo is getting skipped.

I am committed to making this the best BetterPhoto it's ever been this year. I am going to play full out and improve a bunch of things that are on my To Do list - with the contest, with the courses, with the websites... It's going to be a fantastic year.

Help us out by telling your photography friends about us: the more people coming to the contest and the forum will only help us be a great resource for you and your inspired photography.

1/18/2014 9:53:14 PM

Usman, I truly love your never-ending positive attitude!
Big Brother Jim, I hope you can see the great community of photographers you have here. Many friendships have been made because of BP, and we all want it to continue to grow and thrive for years to come. All we ask is for communication between us and all of you at BP. If Editors Picks are going to be slow getting out, fine, just let us know. If you are handing out less EP's than before, great, just let us know why.
You will have a very happy group of people supporting BetterPhoto 2.0! :-)

1/18/2014 9:53:29 PM

OK... speechless to say the least...
Thanks Jim for viewing and commenting on your BP communities concerns. I also want to apologize to everyone for my childish comments and posts.
I truly do enjoy this site and it seems my frustration got the best of me.

1/19/2014 12:17:17 AM

Garret, you really don't have to apologize. For the past 8 or 9 months, we've all put our 2-cents worth in. It's been a hurtful, frustrating time. Many of us have gone from a fruitful, joyful life together here at BP - earning and sharing our EP news in this thread - to a sense that we no longer are good enough photographers to count anymore.

Jim, it is nice that you've joined us in this thread to explain that the team is behind schedule. We truly do get that part and accept it. But, please - try to lessen the jumping around between two months (finish, then continue) and judge in order within the month too. We USED to visit BP every day - with happy anticipation. Now, it's more likely that we visit in answer to an email notification (and ends up feeling like ripping a bandage off a wound.)

I loved BP, and stayed active because I continued to learn and improve. After 9 months of the "changes", I'm feeling as though that was a fantasy, and I'm really a mediocre photographer. That's just sad. But, it is encouraging that you're joining into the discussions now.

1/19/2014 2:42:33 AM

Has BP heard of FREEDOM OF SPEECH? Removing comments that are not directly offensive (in terms of swearing etc.) goes against it. Customers have the right to express their opinions: both positive and negative.

1/19/2014 5:32:15 AM

Has anyone gone through the whole thread and realized what has been removed and what has been highlighted. It is very interesting to see. I will have to say this thread has taken a truly bizarre direction.

1/19/2014 8:32:15 AM

Yes, I think you summed it up, Patricia.

1/19/2014 10:37:53 AM

Hope springs eternal in the photo contestant's heart... Does anyone actually where the judging is? My entries for December are overall ho hum but I would like to know which ones were skipped. Looks like a lot of them...

1/19/2014 10:58:58 AM

  Jim,
Thank you for addressing my point and confirming that you are behind at the moment. As others have said, receiving regular information and feedback from you and BP means a whole lot for all of us.
For my part I can assure you that a fruitful communication with you/BP will elevate my willingness to participate in this great site.

1/19/2014 11:25:58 AM

Harriet, I think they are up to December 12th. They can't do judging today. They are going to watch the NFL play offs. Aren't we all? LOL Go Seattle, Seahawks and Denver, Broncos!!!

1/19/2014 11:31:45 AM

When countries don't have free speech, their populations do virtually everything they can to get out, sometime at the risk of their lives. Their lives are run by the government of a dictator, who spits propaganda to the populous, while threatening their speech with expulsion. The populous begins to leave, sometimes at great risk, leaving all they have accrued behind. I see that happening on this site, since the "changes" have been taking place, by many of my friends, who want me to join them at another site. Until now, I was playing the "waiting game," until my gallery was up for renewal. However, it seems that this site just wants to hear the good things about it, with no comments about the bad- it is not a democracy! And it citizens are leaving in droves. I will lose a few hundred dollars, Jim, if you kick me off, but you will still be losing great photographers. Your contest doesn't mean that much to me anymore. It is the people that matter to me, and so should to you. It doesn't make good business sense to ridicule your clients in print by taking down their comments, that you do not want to hear. The man apologized, and you, essentially spit in his face.

Thanks Harriet. I don't the date, it had to be after 12/8 because that's the date I uploaded it. I used to be able to keep track even after the month had past because I could count back since I entered each day. However, I don't see much use in taking the time each day to do so. But hey one for the month :)

  What's H&D and NLT?

I have read through this entire thread and realize I'm not the only one who isn't getting EPs. In the four years I've been a member, my photos have never gone beyond Finalist and I've never received a POTD. It's discouraging not knowing how images are judged.

I'm glad to hear changes are in the works and hopefully they'll take place sooner rather than later.

I don't know what NLT is but H&D is HIGH AND DRY: A photographic exhibition of peoples & places of the world’s dry lands. It is an annual juried exhibition that Harriet and I participate in. This past year's juror was David Michael Kennedy.

So, I see that I have been silenced by Jim! He just doesn't get it. If he had offered a positive solution, or apologized to those who exercised their free speech, the outcome may have been different for Tiia, Garret and Me, but when we have been censured, illegally, well then, it won't stop with just us.   Thanks Jim for weighing in. I can't even imagine how much work it is to maintain a site like Betterphoto! It's amazing that you guys do all that you do. I think everyone felt that there was definitely something different happening when it came to the contests and the way the EPs and POTD and Monthly awards were given. You've given us some explanation and for that I am sure most of us are grateful. Is there a forum or some place on the site where a photographer can get some feedback about certain photos and why they might not be up to snuff? I know this has all caused me to think that I need to up my game which is a good thing. Everyone can always improve even if only in minor ways. I am wondering if maybe the competition has simply gotten stiffer or if I just had beginner's luck. Either way...happy to be a member here and happy for everyone's support. Thanks again Jim for all that you and your staff does!

1/19/2014 8:44:18 PM

Thanks, April and Ken. Harriet, this is not the only site with contests.

I missed the $50 discount or "2-fer". I wonder if it will be offered again soon? After four years and only three or four "finalists" I'm a bit discouraged. I don't know how long I'll keep entering. As it is, I only enter maybe once or twice a month.

Betty Ann, I like you idea about palace on the site where we can get feedback. That's how to improve.

9 of 28 for the month for me, just under 1/3 and my lowest % since I can remember. Got them on December 15, 16, and 17 but then got skipped on 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 26, 27, 28, 29, and 31. Got lucky on the 25th and 30th :)

Good luck to everyone as they move forward.

Great discussion, and great photos, everyone!

As far as a place to get really great constructive, pro feedback... we have that in the courses. It takes a lot of care and thought and time, so it costs a bit to take a feedback-based course.

People have often asked us to comment more on both their own photos and winning photos. I wish we could but we don't have the resources to put in that time on top of everything else.

I've encouraged others to critique each other but, understandably, most people do not want to risk hurting people's feelings or discouraging a budding artist. I wholeheartedly support that.

I've recently had an idea that I want to run by you: "Suggest a Critique" - where you anonymously give someone a real, thoughtful, helpful, constructive critique... and submit it anonymously. I or one of my team members will review and, if we agree, we'll click "Publish" and it'll show up anonymously on the site. Any thoughts? Like it? Would you do that? Once a day or once a week? Never? Let me know.

Congratulations, those with Editor's Picks!

(And guess what, we're not done... there's a few more to come... probably in a few days.)

Have fun!

Jim, if the person wants an honest critique, then I'm all for trying your idea. And I know a lot of people critique privately. There are some people that ask for a critique, but then are defensive when the person makes positive comments. And we have all seen people who get upset with any type of feedback. But maybe you can have a check box to toggle on, if person wants feedback, then maybe a "request feedback" page that folks can browse in search of photos to comment on, filtered by your staff. But this filtering may take time away from EPs :-)

1/20/2014 8:49:47 AM

LOVE that idea, Jim! The members on this site have a lot of knowledge to share, and I think having their suggestions confirmed by BP staff would be a big plus. Having the whole thing anonymous will encourage more people to offer honest critiques.

1/20/2014 8:49:48 AM

I definitely agree with Ken though...members should specifically opt-in for critique.

1/20/2014 8:52:00 AM

I personally would love critiques but Jim...this still sounds like a lot of work for you and your staff. I don't like the anonymous part though...but that's just me. I am open to any constructive criticism. Thanks for putting all this thought into this.

1/20/2014 9:17:40 AM

Thanks Jim for sharing with us the proposed idea of adding a anonymous critiquing section at BP. I definitely like it, think its a great tool if properly handled, and will result in helping many of us members improve our knowledge/photographic skills/thought-process/editing techniques etc.

Maybe there are three sections in the proposed section for critiquing;

Thick-Skinned (for members who want and can digest anything thrown at them),
Moderate Skinned (for members who want and can digest moderately strong critiques)
Thin-Skinned (For people who want gentle critiques only)

However, I agree with Ken that doing this will be an added chore for Team BP to keep the thread moderated.

UB.

Great idea, Jim. I have learned so much from this site and from the members here already. I might be sitting myself up here but I could use some help with my snow pictures. Not real happy with the tones.

Thanks, Peggy. I will take a look at that. Don't remember seeing it before. I enjoy being outside even in cold weather. So in WV that includes the snow and of course that means with the camera. Appreciate the information.

1/20/2014 10:20:40 AM

I had assumed this one certainly had been skipped, but an EP just recently popped up. Don't know exactly when, but probably today. December 7, Catch-All.

Way Back When

1/20/2014 10:29:18 AM

Jim, I also think it's a comments/critiques are a great idea; but I don't like the idea of anonymous. It seems to me if someone takes the time to comment on an image, you should know who it is and you can have a "conversation" with that person. When I offer constructive comments comments, I often preface it with "If I'm overstepping, please let me know, but I personally welcome it."

1/20/2014 11:04:24 AM

I took JZ's course on snow photography & learned a lot. One POTD from it. Nothing else, but I was still happy. So was JimZ - nice critiques from him.

I agree with Ken Beatty that BP has given me a place where I can learn, take critiques, and get to know fellow photographers. Before BP, I knew that I had a passion for photography and wanted to learn more. But, my confidence level was so low. I liked my work, but I wasn't quite sure where to start. I took classes, and I hired tutors to help. But, I still didn't really feel comfortable with my daily work. Then I discovered BP, and it opened so many avenues. I have gained so much confidence in my work, daily challenged by the amazing work of the other photographers, and have been able to take classes and continue to learn.
I get such a rush from the EP, Favorites, and Finalist awards, and it is a blast to check and see what has been awarded.

So, Thank you Jim, fellow photographers, and instructors.

Jane

1/20/2014 12:49:31 PM

Whew! I just now came back to this place, and what a bunch of comments, and I read them all.

As far as December, I only have one, 12-28, "Let the Sun Shine In"

Will get back to checking in here, very interesting.
Hey...what does "Removed by Moderator"?
So what do we not need to do to keep that from happening!

I have so enjoyed looking at nearly all of you and your gallery several times a month!

Of course I always look at Ken Smith's, I was in a group with him and several others back in 2006 or 2007 when I first began and they were soooo helpful!

Friends are priceless!

Have a great month gang....

jo ann c.

1/20/2014 3:08:36 PM

Jo Ann, to keep from getting censured, you need not complain, or say anything negative, whether concerns with this site, or not. You WILL get your comments bolded and in BIG letters if you gush and drool over how great a site it is, and thank BP for all your photo success.

1/20/2014 3:15:33 PM

I guess I am missing something, I didn't realize how important EP's are. In the overall scheme of things they are pretty far down on my list. :)
bb/wy

1/20/2014 4:00:22 PM

If they are not important, why even enter the contest? "Contest" denotes competition and a competition is to win some sort of recognition or prize. An EP tells the photographer that their work meets a certain standard and can be considered for finalist and possibly more. Frankly, it is a sifting process. No one wants to have every photo "sifted" all the time. The reward keeps one from giving up hope and keeps one striving to improve.

1/20/2014 5:04:39 PM

Maybe I should explain my comment better. I enter the contest when I have time and because it's fun for me. A ep is nice but it is for this site only. Every judge has a different opinion. I have had photos that won 1st or 2nd on a local and state level that sometimes win on line and sometimes don't. One was picked by Kodak for the digital board in New York and won only one contest online. As they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Personally I have seen your work and like it very much. I think some of the missed ones should have ep's but I am not a judge. :)
I shoot what I like and sometimes like what I shoot, keep learning and have a great hobby that I really enjoy. It doesn't get any better than this.
bb/wy

1/20/2014 5:41:17 PM

You probably have a better attitude about the contest than most. I thoroughly agree that one should always shoot what they like. To copy someone's style is to not develop one's own style. It is as simple as this, while EP's in the grand scheme of things are not of eternal value, they do keep one coming back for more... Thanks, for the kind remarks.

1/20/2014 5:49:35 PM

If they are done with December, these are my EPs. Very happy to have ended up with six out of eight.

1/22/2014 11:26:44 PM

Jill, I want to thank you for picking up the "baton" when Cheri was no longer able to continue this thread. Your doing so meant we all had some place to be together for a bit of time.

1/23/2014 12:11:46 AM

Kathy and Joannie, anybody can handle it. You just go to "Ask a New Question" and post it for Feb...I just thought it was nice to have somewhere to be able to keep track of what was going on with EPs , Staff Favorites, and Finalists. To me a forum means a place to be able to say what is on your mind. From now on I will just send BP mail when I have a question.

1/23/2014 12:43:37 AM

Jill, you have been the best forum leader. All of us who have been "deleted" are justified in our anger. After all, we have paid for the "privilege of commenting. When JM deleted our responses, HE broke that contract, by taking away a right (according to general rights of contract). None of the comments made on this page were going against the terms and conditions, and by taking them off, BP Jim has broken the plied contractual conditions.

Will miss you, but maybe you'll check in with us?

1/31/2014 8:59:39 AM

He could have told us what was going on in the very beginning and everyone would have understood. This deleting and highlighting is something I have never seen before. It doesn't set well with me. The sad part is I have lost respect and confidence in this site. I will participate when I can because I stupidly signed up for 2years. Hope someone keeps the thread alive because it is the only way we have any idea what is happening.

Well, there ya go! Deleting our forum contents again-not adult behavior.....

You never know, BP mail may not be private either.

Yes, the Staff Favorites, Finalists, and Winners all came out on the last day of the month. Our intention is to improve the timing of the contest this month. Keep an eye out for great changes and more timely feedback for you.

Jim - I think we've shifted over to the new EFP thread for January. Many of us arn't following this thread anymore.

2/4/2014 8:45:32 AM

  Jim,
This is all we wanted as we all like BP. I know this is a big undertaking in running this site and the improvements you mentioned will be greatly appreciated and looked forward to.

69 .  What is the best inexpensive monitor ?
My DEll monitor died on me and I have too buy a new one. I am looking to spend under $200 for a 22" monitor. Any recommendations about what brand? Loved the Dell, but it only lasted 3 years and of course died 3 weeks after my warranty was expired :-) With the holidays, black Friday etc. happening I am hoping to get a good deal on something that is best for Photoshop as I use it all the time. I checked the forum, but there is nothing recently posted...I am using a Desktop PC.

I think you should be able to find some good ones (with Black Friday sale) meeting your requirement on this site. Good luck.

Usman, I actually did get an Acer 22" monitor from Bestbuy, when I got it home it turned out to be a piece of junk. The monitor does not fit on the stand, the buttons for adjusting things are located in a very inconvenient spot and the color is awful. This is why UI am asking for recommendations about what brand to buy. What brand monitor do you use yourself? I loved my DEll monitor, but it died after just 3 years...

Jill, I think your best bet is Amazon.com to compare features and prices and read the reviews.

11/30/2013 8:04:09 AM

I was just interested in hearing what kind of monitors the other photographers here on BP were using and if they liked them. I actually ended up getting another Dell ...Dell - 23" Widescreen Flat-Panel IPS LED HD Monitor S2340M . Now to return the damaged one and get this one at Bestbuy...I am waiting until after the weekend:-)They had folks in tents waiting on Wednesday for Black Friday!

11/30/2013 8:35:38 AM

I have an HP w2207, which I love, and an older Dell UltraSharp, both hooked up to my desktop.

11/30/2013 9:18:29 AM

Hope the Dell serves you well for a long time. I don't use a monitor. I do all my processing on the two laptops that I have, one at home and one in office.

  70 .  Mirrorless Camera
Hi everyone,
I am thinking of buying a Sony NEX 6 for a walk around point and shoot. Does anyone have this camera? If so, what is your opinion of it?
Thanks,
Kathy

  Hi Kathy,
Good questions. BP instructor Rob Sheppard has been writing about mirrorless cameras for quite some time ... he loves 'em :) Check out his blog: Mirrorless Nature blog, including his 10/14/13 entry: My History with Mirrorless Digital Cameras, which discusses the Sony NEX, plus other models too.

Have fun!

Kerry

  Kathy,

I'm sure the Sony is a great camera, but have you considered the Olympus E-M5? Since it is a Micro Four Thirds camera, the lenses are smaller and lighter than the Sony lenses, and the available lens selection is very extensive.

I have a couple E-M5's and am thoroughly impressed with performance and image quality.

Just a thought.

God Bless,
Greg
