Peggy, I didn't get the daily POTD e-mail for the last two days, and according to the POTD page (http://www.betterphoto.com/Photo-of-the-Day.asp), the last one on there is from Mar 8th.

Hopefully it's just a glitch and we'll see POTDs return shortly.

3/10/2014 8:07:41 PM

Ken and Peggy, its actually because they are still contemplating if they will showcase two of my images as consecutive POTDs as they have never done that before, LOL!!!

Usman, thanks for bringing BP to a screeching halt with POTDs! :-)

3/11/2014 4:44:21 AM

  Thanks, Ken and Usman!
Usman, I thought it was my images they were considering, LOL!

3/11/2014 6:47:39 AM

  Hi All,
A nice -- and fun!! -- discussion. Yes, Ken has it right ... "just a glitch and we'll see POTDs return shortly". The tech crew is working on it!
Thanks,
Kerry

P.S. Sorry, Usman and Peggy :)

3/11/2014 11:58:29 AM

Hi Kerry! Thanks for popping in and letting us know!

3/11/2014 12:17:44 PM

Its all right, Kerry. Watching POTD is just like getting a quick shot of extra inspiration each day, and I confess, I am addicted to it!!! Glad to know, it will be back soon :-)

  Hi Peggy and Usman,
Thanks for the followup, and glad that you enjoy POTD!
Kerry

3/11/2014 10:00:36 PM

  Kerry, the POTD daily email is still not reaching us, however, I do see a POTD given on March 12, 2014 by looking at the POTD archives page;

Something must be up with the email system. I have not been getting my comments emails either. Even though I click the button to be notified of comments when I look in my discussions, the notification is turned off...

3/13/2014 11:29:53 PM

It seems it is resolved as I got POTD email notification for today ie., March 17, 2014. Thanks Team BP ;)

22 .  How to Change the Setting from AE to AF
How do I change the setting from AE to AF on the Nikon D7000 pls?

3/5/2014 11:04:48 AM

  Hi Stella,
Thanks for posting this question. Although both are auto settings, the two really aren't closely related, since one (AE) refers to exposure, while the other (AF) relates to focusing ... two different "animals" entirely.

BetterPhoto instructor Peter Burian offers some great tips on auto-focus. See his article here...

And here is instructor Lynne Eodice's article on auto-exposure...

For the specifics on the D7000, we offer an outstanding interactive course...

Enjoy learning more about AE and AF!

  23 .  Identity Theft
I have sent Jim an email but this is of urgent need to address.
Some time ago I had to let my Deluxe website expire due to unemployment and cost.
A couple of people contacted me recently to say they had noticed I had updated my website.
On examination I found that someone had hijacked my old site, still with my identity, and uploaded photography information and contact forms to elsewhere.
My concern is that I believe this was my Betterphoto URL and the identity theft may be a scam.
Here is the link: http://brettdolsenphotography.com/

Which is the hijacked site? Your gallery and the site that you have the link to both have pictures from Australia.

3/5/2014 4:07:11 PM

  Thankyou Gregory,
The site that has been hijacked is http://brettdolsenphotography.com/
My basic Betterphoto site still has my images.
Anyone that googles Brett Dolsen Photography will hit the hijacked page and URL at the top of the search page.
There is a blog there with four entries titled *The best of photography *Photography lighting tip kits*Photography information about street photography*Marriage ceremony photography courses.
There is a contact form also to someone else!
There is also links to to websites*PaulaGPhotography and scottbirdsongphoto.com
There are none of my images or information displayed other than the social media links will take you to my pages and the title of the blog being BrettDolsenphotography.

Hoping this clarifies the problem

  Hi Brett,

I can understand your concerns.

However, the terms "identify theft" and "hijacked" are not really the correct terms for this situation.

You let you domain name expire in early 2013. It because available for another to register it and in August of 2013, someone did. They have the same name as you but operate in a different part of the world (it appears to me to be in Washington, near Seattle). So they have set up a website, published a few blog posts, etc. The social media links direct visitors to the main URLs for twitter, Google+, LinkedIn, etc so when you click one of them, it appears to go to YOUR twitter, G+, LinkedIn etc. but it is really just going to the main site for each and because you are signed in, it looks like your profile there. When I click on one, I see my own LinkedIn page, for example.

I hope this has clarified the situation and allayed your fears. There is nothing illegal or scammy going on here... it's just how domain name availability and registration works.

I'll email this to you as well.

Enjoy!
Jim

3/6/2014 11:10:26 AM

I guess the main point here is to never let your domain name expire.
The person that has the name now does not have the same family or given name as me.
My information initially uploaded on the deluxe portfolio still shows up in search engines so anyone that searches for me is being directed to somewhere else.
It seems that someone is attempting to capitalise on other peoples reputation and credibility.
I see this as a warning to other members not to let your domain name pass into someone else's hands.

24 .  bird and flower overload
maybe its just me - but there seems to be a huge influx of birds and flower photos.....and that baby being held in someones forearm is so so so over done.

we need some new sherifs in town perhaps

3/2/2014 3:05:40 PM

In my opinion it must be just you. I have been here since August 2007 and I still love seeing the flowers, birds and babies that are displayed here at BP. I think every photographer has certain things they prefer to photograph and enjoy sharing them here at BP without restrictions. Not sure MaryAnne what your idea is with needing new sheriffs in town?

Perhaps you may be thinking more fine art photography. There are as many types of photographers as there are people.
Good is Good, no matter the type.

3/2/2014 4:31:30 PM

Yes I am thinking of fine art photography and creative shots with intentions behind them, conceptual, interesting and unique. Not carbon copies.

SOME of the birds and flower shots are simply journalism. Here is a flower and here is what it looks like. It's just not interesting. We all know what a bird looks like.

BTW..I have 2 birds in my gallery.

Tammy "it must be just you", is a good laugh and an insult no well received.

I do not appreciate being insulted in an open forum in a world were freedom of speech is such a treasure. I assure you, it is not just my opinion. There are many conceptual artist on this site, that agree with me.

I look forward to seeing your gallery, you probably have more creative, conceptual and non-carbon copy photos than it sounds like in your comment.

Good for you if you love seeing birds.

You stated your opinion and I stated mine. Thank goodness we live in a world where freedom of speech is considered a great thing.

" it must be just you"... an odd and immature insult.

thank you for your in put.

Happy photo to all.

3/3/2014 1:51:28 AM

  Tammy,
You have some really nice photos. I would hang some of them in an art gallery.
"Natural Framing" is one of my favourite shots.
Your photos are not the type of photos I was referring to. So no need to be defensive.
Your photos are nice.
They are not staged journal photos.
They are free and in the moment; really lovely.

3/3/2014 1:59:50 AM

  Tammy
I just peeked at the editors picks today and they are a nice cross section of all types of photos. I love it.
There are so many genres of photography, I simply would like to see them all represented...as long as they are fantastic.

thank you for your input....and NO, its not just me. Just look at who won awards today. No, its not just me.

3/3/2014 2:06:36 AM

Sorry you took this as an insult. Not intended. Just restated what you stated. Thanks for your opinion but this will be the last I say about this. Thanks.

3/3/2014 3:02:34 AM

That is probably a good idea.

Good luck with your nature shots.

3/3/2014 3:04:20 AM

  Karen,
I just looked at your website. Fantastic! Absolutely Fantastic!
You are very talented and have a great eye for great art.

3/3/2014 10:10:40 AM

Well, since flowers are my favorite photography subject (as they are with quite a few other BP members, I'm sure), as long as there's a category for them here at BP I'll keep adding them to my gallery. And yes, no matter how numerous they are, I enjoy (and get inspired) by seeing other members' work; so as far as I'm concerned, keep 'em coming.

3/3/2014 11:08:47 AM

Well Monnie, that's 2 of you now.

Clearly I am out numbered. LOL.

Thank Goodness the judges enjoy conceptual work, because I already know what a flower looks like. I have thousands of them in my 5 gardens, mostly perenials from different countries.

thank goodness for freedom of speech and the freedom to express ourselves artistically or the world would be a big cookie cutter.

3/3/2014 1:52:34 PM

  Well
Someone more eloquent than me once said,
"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder"

3/4/2014 3:18:56 PM

Literally , that means: what ever someone looks at is beautiful to them.

I am not that easily impressed.

Yes. I am not like that. I enjoy things that have integrity..

A flower is a flower....wait for some nice lighting... And take a photo.

And Wow it's painful to see someone try to photoshop a beautiful flower. Mother Nature should sue for plagiarism. :) and distruction of intellectual property .

I love flowers. In my garden , not on my wall.

To each there own. If we all thought the same. We would be like massed produced tacky postcards.

  25 .  Finalist & Winner Positing
My question is how long does it take PB to post the finalists. I know there are finalist for Jan. but no posting. I'm very busy right now and don't have time to search everyones gallery to see if they have a finalist to comment on. Sometimes I thank the old system worked much better.

Lorri, I'm not sure how long you've been gone from EP. Several years ago BP was pretty consistent in handing out EPs within a few days after the contest day.

But over the last few months, they've gone several weeks without awarding any EPs, and then in a 2-3 day period they catch up and do about 10-15 days.

Last month, Jim M said that BP was working hard to award EPs faster, including the Staff Favs and Finalists/Winners. And BP has already gone thru all days in Feb. And recently, folks have reported more EPs in Feb so it looks like they're taking a 2nd run thru the images.

Long story short...they are getting to EPs faster now (at least for Feb and initially, for March).

As for whether there are fewer EPs. There are far fewer contest entries now as compared to a few years ago, so the number of EPs are lower as well. And the EP rate fluctuates. I've gone thru a sampling of photos to see which ones got an EP and which ones didn't. Several years ago, I remember seeing months when the rate was 80% (which means virtually all contest entries got an EP), to as low as 25% (one in four got an EP).

I checked the EP rate for March 1st, from Midnight to 12PM (12 hour period), and the rate was 38% (42 EPs out of 110 entered). That's lower than normal, although maybe 40% is the new norm?

Love the glich that is going on right now on my gallery! All of my finalists for the past years have gold badges on them and I have gold badges on images that haven't been through the finalist period yet...I love it! :-)

3/12/2014 10:15:39 AM

My goodness, Joannie, wonder what's going on there! No changes like this in my gallery as far as I can see. Too bad, LOL. Also, not doing well so far with EPs. Missed the first three days of the month, and since then have only two EPs, with the last one on the 9th.

3/12/2014 10:20:22 AM

My precious great-grandson skipped again! :-(

4/4/2014 5:45:57 PM

I have cut way back on entering photos and I really wish I hadn't renewed my gallery for another year. I entered two for March and both were skipped. No reason to be encouraged.

4/4/2014 6:18:53 PM

Are they through for March? I was looking at the EP's and there are some fabulous photos this month and lots of EP's. I haven't been anywhere to photograph and have not done much for a few months. I can see that I have some catch up work to do. Good luck to everyone.

4/4/2014 8:19:21 PM

Yes Harriet, they are through with their FIRST pass of March contest entries. However, as has happened in the last few months, I expect there will be at least one more pass where they will pick more EP.

  I just started back on 3/29 and I have eps for 3/29,30,31 & 4/1.
I see the reasons I left for are still here! I also see the sight is experiencing bandwidth problems that keep the photos from populating the page for several minutes.

4/7/2014 4:07:45 PM

4/8/2014 6:55:38 AM

Joannie, they will probably reassess some skipped images and grant a few more EPs in the second pass. I am an optimist and see two potential golds out of two EPs. Best of luck.

I wonder if, although the CA category changes don't go into effect until the April entries, entering anything else under the CA category is already a no-go.

So now do I re-enter my skipped entry under a different category in the future or just assume that the Judges are right about my photography skills?

Kathy, you can reenter photos into whatever category you like. If you provide a link to the photo in question, perhaps we can give you our thoughts on the category.

4/8/2014 9:12:48 AM

I did get that email - I thought that was the best reversal decision they've made.

It's probably no good, but it was so dramatic that I was intrigued enough to enter it.

Hey Kathy, I like it. But most importantly, do you like it? Don't let the omission (or inclusion) of an EP be the barometer for whether a photo is good or bad. We've all seen resubmitted photos that didn't have an EP initially, go all the way to 1st place and Grand Prize.

It's certainly not applicable for the new Man-made category. But People would be an option. And I'm going off memory, but I think "Elements" also accounts for abstracts. And maybe this is an abstract...would be curious what others thought too.

4/8/2014 3:04:12 PM

Kind of pitiful- 6 of 12 EPs this month. Pitiful because they skipped what I thought were the best of the bunch!

4/8/2014 5:15:54 PM

I do like it, Ken (wasn't thinking that People would be the next try.)

4/8/2014 5:44:15 PM

None for me this month, although I only entered twice. I've learned not to expect much from these judges, whoever they are.

4/8/2014 9:02:52 PM

Oops. Ken, I meant to say that People is probably the next category for a re-entry. Thanks for checking out the image.

Bob, just navigate to the Forum page and click "all new responses." You might want to bookmark this link:

Usually, the EP thread is towards the top of the page, because it's pretty active. And this URL is quid reference if you wish to see any of the active forum topics.

To navigate to the Forum page, click on the link "My Member Center." On the left hand side you'll see various things like My Photos, My Courses, Forum, Gallery, etc. Then click "Forum." And from there, click "all new responses."

Now that Ken added the number of the April EP thread, all you have to do is change the 5 digit number in the address box above from 36098 to 36113.

Hi Everyone, I have a Canon T1i, which I love! But for a gift, my husband bought me a fisheye, and wide-angle lenses. I have 2 lenses, 18-55 & 55-250. Is there a better lens than what I have? Thank you!

There's not really a right answer to your question, without knowing what your main shooting interests are. Ultra-wide angle is a unique (and sometimes challenging) focal length; personally, I love it. Your 18 - 250 range from your two lenses covers a lot of useful ranges for travel, walk-about, etc., but may not adequately handle macro, and wouldn't be as useful for say, bird photography, etc.

  30 .  Countdown to January's Contest Results
Hello Everyone! It's the 15th of January and time to share our favorite contest image(s) from January. If it makes Staff Fav/Finalist/Winner, all the better. So give your favorites a showcase here, tell us why you picked them, and join us in the countdown!

In December, there were 5,600 contest entries and in January the number was closer to 7,000. So, that's a good thing…an upward trend in contest entries. And I would like to see an upward trend for the number of folks that share their fav. :-)

In earlier forum threads, BP (via Jim Moitke) said that they were striving to speed up the contest results. And BP finished up the January EPs much faster than previous months. So, fingers crossed that we'll see Staff Favs in a few days, and no more "Mad dash to the Finish Line!" :-)

So, upload your Fav photo(s) then join us as we await the contest results. Good luck everyone!

Some helpful hints for attaching photos into a BP Forum Thread, if you're unfamiliar with the process:
1) Sign into BP. IF YOU HAVEN'T entered the Contest for today, you can use the "Photo ID" method to pull an existing image (from your Member Center) into your Reply here. This avoids a duplicate image upload to your Member Center. Note the Photo ID# of the image you wish to include here (visible in your Member Center) then return to this thread, click Respond, enter the text of your reply, and choose "1" from the images-to-attach drop-down (even though you won't actually be uploading a file.) Click Submit; at the next screen, populate the "Photo ID" field shown over at the right. Skip the other text fields on that screen, check the boxes at the bottom, and Submit.

2) IF YOU HAVE ALREADY entered the Contest for today, you can't use the Photo ID method *today*. Either wait until tomorrow to reply here first, or upload a copy of the image (from your PC) and attach to this thread. This produces a duplicate image in your Member Center; however, you don't have to make that duplicate visible in your Gallery.

If you're uploading a duplicate, I suggest titling it "For Forum" so it stands out in your Member Center, for easier housecleaning later on. This can also help nudge BP viewers to go find the original image in your gallery, if they want to leave a comment. Likewise, if you want to add a comment to a photo seen here, first try to tell if it is a duplicate upload. As a courtesy, try to find the original image in the member's gallery and leave your comment there instead of on the duplicate... which may one day be deleted.

Kalena, both your "favs" are very nice. I like the simplicity of the leaf photo, and lens baby gives the ropes a unique perspective. I tried a lens baby several years ago but could never master it. You should enter more photos; strive for 10 in March! :-)

Thanks, Kara. And hopefully we won't be hanging out til the very last day of the month. :-)

Nice job with your "fav of favs." You have a unique style for your photos, to include the texture overlays. I think your decayed flowers look better than my fresh flower photos.

2/18/2014 6:45:25 AM

Thanks, Ken. I love working with my Lensbaby. It's fun, but you're right. It does take some getting used to.

As far as more photos, I have a hard enough time keeping track of what I put in the contest. Sure wish we could manage our photos into monthly uploads or something like that instead of just having one loonnnggg list! Lol

2/18/2014 7:12:54 AM

It takes a little extra time, but there are relatively simple way to keep track of your uploads and entries. Here are a couple of things that work for me.
I upload and enter the contest on the same day and I always have a description of some kind, even if it's only "Category: Animals". This ensures that the date of upload stays on the image. If I must upload early and enter from my gallery later, I include the date I do submit in my description.
On the last day of the month, I go to my member center - my photos and down to contest entries. Then I copy and paste those into a document which I keep in a folder on my hard drive.
I am actually kind of obsessive about keeping track of these things, so I have several other things I do (like I actually plan out an entire month's entries in advance so I don't have to think about it the night before or in the morning), but these two things are quick and easy so I thought I'd share.

Painted With Light
Painted With Light
Winter is my favorite season to witness the sunlight through Washington National Cathedral's stained glass windows. Here, the (unseen) windows of the south clerestory cast their light on the adjacent rib clusters of the vaulted ceiling, just starting to spring up and away from the wall. I wanted a compressed composition of just light-washed ribs, so I used 200mm on the 70-300. I was fortunate to get access to a scaffolded platform situated 75 feet off the floor; the platform put me about 2 feet above the bottom edge of the large clerestory windows.
1/14 2nd Place - EOD

In grateful and loving memory of Rowan LeCompte, renowned stained glass artist, who designed nearly four dozen of the cathedral's 231 windows, including the 8 windows casting the beautiful colors in this image.

Fingers crossed for everyone, and for (hopefully!) a quicker announcement trend this year, as Jim alluded to...

I'm choosing this one as my favorite from January because I've long wanted to capture a sunlight-through-stained-glass image like this, focusing on the gracefully curving ceiling ribs. But an upward shot taken from the floor (90 feet below these ribs) just doesn't produce what I've had in mind. This composition was only made possible recently, with the installation of some earthquake-repair scaffolding. I shot this as part of a 3-bracket series for possible HDR, but the middle exposure was quite nice, and I ended up using it alone, just pulling up the shadows a bit.

Kalena, to footstomp what Nikki said...many of us do a copy/paste of our contest entries. On the last day of the month, I paste them into an e-mail and send to myself. I label the e-mail "Contest Entries for ____ (insert the month here)." That way, you'll always have a record of what you entered into the contest.

Chris, you're blessed to be associated with the National Cathedral, and because of that you can pick/choose the best time to photograph. And no exception here; a real beauty and hopefully BP will recognize it as such. Welcome aboard!

Thanks, Ken... fingers crossed on this one! I'm definitely happy to take advantage of the "perks" (ie, special access) that come with being a volunteer tour guide there!!

Kalena, similar to Nikki's comment, I also keep a very simple spreadsheet on my computer desktop, and for each new image I upload into BP's contest, I record a new row in that spreadsheet, including the image's filename, the image's "BP name" I chose, the category I entered, the contest period (ie, "Jan-14") and a very brief description of the image. (If I resub an existing entry directly from my Member Center, I go back and update the original row for that image, rather than make a new row.) In the end, I have a basically chronological record of every entry I've ever made, all in one place. (A separate tab in the spreadsheet tracks any Finalist/Winner outcome.) It has been interesting to see, over 8 years of accumulated entries! It is also useful if someone, say, wants a print of a particular image they saw deep in my gallery -- I can look up the BP image name they give me, see the camera filename, then pull that out of my archives. Sounds more complex than it is, but it isn't much "work" once you get into the habit of quickly updating the sheet for each new entry.

2/18/2014 9:46:16 AM

Thanks for the tips everyone. I do put the date in the comment section when I upload for the contest. I should probably keep a separate list on my computer, but I don't upload that many each month. I don't get out the the camera as much as others do. Maybe later on I'll be able yo do that.

:-)

Window to the Past
Katasraj Mandir is a temple complex situated in Katas village near Choa Saidanshah in the Chakwal district of Punjab in Pakistan. These were built around 900 years or so ago, although the earliest of them dates back to the latter half of the 6th century AD.

Using Nikor 10.5mm Fisheye lens. Processed on NIK's HDR Efx Pro2 and PS CS6.

Here is my fave of the month. I have experienced difficulty in composing with a fisheye and found it a challenging task. The camera almost picks everything your eyes see at a time and finding the right composition to point to your subject is not easy, in my humble opinion. Maybe I need more practice.

Wonderful picks and wishing you all lots of luck. The Staff Favorite's should not be too long!!!

Welcome aboard, Usman. I also have a fisheye and agree with you; it's a bit of a challenge because perspective is altered. But that's what makes it fun. And you did great with yours. My eyes hit the temple first, then go to the right as I walk along the path to the right. Cool shot for sure!

Welcome aboard Mike! Such a beautiful view of Vermillion Lakes. Don't you wish Omaha had mountains like this?

I hope we see your photo with a Staff Fav emblem real soon...and hopefully I don't jinx their release. :-)

Congrats to everyone that got Staff Favs. The BP announcement said there were 675 Staff Favs, or about a 10.2 percent success rate. Last month, the Staff Fav rate was over 12%.

Assuming Finalist rate is similar to last month (8%), we'll see about 530 finalists. Meaning…if you got a Staff Fav, there's a 75% chance it will get finalist…assuming there are 530 finalists. :-)

2/23/2014 1:20:48 PM

Thanks Ken for letting us know what our odds are. LOL I think maybe you hold the record for the most staff favorites. Congrats to you!

Congratulations to all the finalists! Two of my three staff favorites advanced. I see Nikki's posted favorite here, went to finalist; mine too… Did others post their "thread favorites" here without linking to the Member Center originals?

Congrats to all that got a finalist, be it via your "Fav" photo here (congrats Nikki and Chris!), or a different photo.

The selection rate was 6%, which is a little lower than normal. And with only 399 photos picked, there's a better chance to get gold. Good luck to everyone in the gold medal round!

Hey Peggy…well, I had a cold beer on a cold Omaha night. Does that count? :-) They should be coming out soon; tomorrow is the last day of the month. But at least this month, it wasn't as rushed as the last few months. We could catch our breath and enjoy the last few rounds.

2/27/2014 8:10:27 PM

  Hi Ken
Yes, refreshing adult beverages definitely count! I have enjoyed the timing of the announcements this month ... the anticipation and the chance to enjoy each stage has been really nice.
Again, good luck to all!

2/27/2014 8:14:35 PM

You are so right, Ken. Its been after sometime that I went through most all the Finalists and got a good dose of inspiration. Hope this trend continues in the coming months. Just had breakfast here which was a "paratha", with "chanay currie" and a cup of nice warm tea. I know most of you would not be able to relate, but believe me my taste buds are as sated as yours or Peggy's ;)

2/27/2014 8:14:41 PM

A little Merlot here tonight. I, too, have enjoyed the time. But now I'm ready to see the winners. Don't expect one myself so I'm not anxious - just looking forward to seeing what is selected. Continued good luck vibes to everyone.

2/27/2014 8:18:26 PM

Sounds good to me, Usman (and definitely healthier than my chocolate!) ... :)

Good morning, everyone. While we wait on the gold medals, just a reminder that today is the last day of the month, so do a copy/paste of your February contest entries for reference (if you're in the habit of doing that).

Also, next month's theme is "Creativity." And like all BP themes, it's open to our interpretation. I've seen creative macros of oil patterns in water, or objects set against computer monitors, with reflecting base. Or a fisheye photo from inside a mailbox/oven, etc. If you have ideas on creativity, feel free to share while we wait. Or have more chocolates. :-)
