  21 .  Lightroom VS Photoshop
Lately more and more photographers I know(some professional) are using Lightroom. I have always used Photoshop but am interested in using Lightroom or at least experimenting with it. How many of my fellow BP members prefer Lightroom and why or visa versa? I would appreciate any feedback. Thanks.

I would say try LR. I love it. Of course you should watch as many educational video and tutorials as possible with patients. I know I have spent much more on education for LR then what it cost for LR.

6/13/2014 9:58:21 AM

  Thanks, Frank.

I use both LR and PS and wouldn't want to be without either one. LR is a terrific 'digital asset management system'(Library). I use the Develop module (basically camera raw) for 95% of my processing and will take an image over to Photoshop if it needs touch-up work that LR can't handle (LR's only weakness as far as I'm concerned).
I also highly recommend the Nik/Google products such as Viveza, Color Efex, and Silver Efex.
And, last but not least, if you do focus stacking Helicon is hard to beat.

6/26/2014 12:59:34 PM

Thanks, Mark. This is pretty much what I have begun doing. I have not used Helicon a whole lot but need to give it another try. Again, thanks for taking the time to share.

I love LR. Like Mark, I like PS for retouch. The writers of LR have spawned a cottage industry of books to tell us how to use LR. I was lost until I got both LR developer Scott Kelby's Lightroom for Digital Photographers and Sylvia Bampton's Lightroom, the Missing FAQ's. I'm 67 and I find nothing computer-related to be intuitive. You might fare better - try Scott Kelby's book first.

7/21/2014 8:30:48 AM

Thanks, Doug. I have been using Lightroom more and more and do like it. Like others, I go to PS for detailed touch ups.
Thanks again.

22 .  How to Send a Large Group of Photos
I was the amateur photographer at a friend's wedding. I took 200 photos in 'fine' resolution. What is the best way to move the photos to a CD to give to her? I'm sure that moving the JPEGs via my own laptop would take forever! Help!

6/10/2014 1:30:13 PM

I used to use a wonderful stand-alone CD burner that made CDs directly from media cards with no need for a computer - great for travel (Iomega, I think). I've seen a few others since then, but in any event, that would involve additional expense so not an option unless you'd be using it often. Can't imagine it would take THAT long to burn 200 photos from your laptop, though, even if they're very high-res.
And BTW, if you do want the standalone burner, go for a DVD burner, not CD. You'd need multiple CDs to store that many photos. That's mostly why I stopped using ours - the higher megapixel cameras meant one day's outing would fill up at least 2 or 3 CDs.
You might also transfer your photos to a flash drive - they're relatively cheap - and give it to her on that. You should be able to get all of them on a 4 MB drive, which you should be able to get for 10 bucks or less.

6/10/2014 3:27:41 PM

Thumb drives have gotten very cheap. It would be quite easy to drag a folder from your hard drive to the USB drive. Also, I don't think burning 200 photos (even at high res) would take an exceptionally long time.

6/3/2014 8:09:39 PM

I have a question. Where would I enter a photo of flowers blowing in the wind? It is a blurred effect made by moving my camera so not much was done in digital darkroom.... I remember that Carolyn had one similar to mine but was it in Catch All? Since catch all is now Man Made, it would not work there. I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks.

6/4/2014 5:59:10 AM

My guess is, if they are recognizable as flowers, they should still go in the flower category..if they are more abstract, maybe in EOD.. In your member center there is a link under "your photos" for how to categorize. I just read through them, and that's the best I can come up with.

6/4/2014 6:35:40 AM

Thanks, Carolyn. I think that there should be a separate category for abstracts, maybe.

6/4/2014 8:19:04 AM

I went thru the N/L and flowers contest entries for May 2nd. Opened each one to see if it had an EP. For N/L, 39% got an EP.

For flowers, the EP rate was much lower, 6 out of 27 for 22%. Maybe they're still going thru flowers.

Assuming these EP rates don't change, they're lower compared to previous months. But the 2nd pass-thru could bring these numbers up.

6/6/2014 7:37:49 PM

OK, got a skip (Animal and EoD) on June 1 and 2 and an EP on this one in MM for June 3.

Sharon, I didn't get an EP either for the 4th, in N/L. So, I took a look at all N/L entries from the 4th. BP handed out 9 of 26 for EPs, with success rate of 35%. So, they are handing out EPs but at a lower rate than what they've done in the past.

6/13/2014 6:54:48 PM

Lots of skips, but I did get one for the 4th. Just noticed one for the 8th in People.

Thanks, Ken! Just curious why so many images not making any kind of cut.

6/14/2014 8:12:19 AM

Not many EPs for me too this month. But I still had a great time today shooting and loved it.

6/14/2014 9:41:51 AM

Last month I had 13/16 which is a little over 81%. This month I have one. Discouraging.

6/14/2014 5:18:09 PM

I know that this discussion is about the June EP's but I asked this question in the Q/A and only got one reply. Since I am not having a lot of luck this month,I guess these questions do pertain to the June EP's :-) I am hoping that my fellow photographers would answer a couple of questions for me.
1. What program do you prefer, Adobe or Lightroom?
2. What do you use for HDR ?
3. Is there a pluggin or program that would be best for florals?
Since joining BP I have had a lot of help and am hoping that I can get some responses to these questions. Thanks in advance. Feel free to use BP mail if you wish.

Harriet, I've never used Lightroom; just Photoshop. And I have Photomatix for the HDR software. I also use NIK Color Efex which has various categories of effects; e.g., Nature, Landscape, Portrait, and Wedding.

6/14/2014 5:46:55 PM

Harriet, I couldn't figure out how to respond in BP mail.

I use CS6 for editing. I've never had any use for Lightroom more because I don't need it for file organization so I don't really see the point in having it.

I use Photomatix and Nik for HDR. Sometimes Photomatix works better and sometimes Nik works better. I guess it just depends on the set of images I'm working with. Why one program works better with some images than the other is beyond me but that's my experience with HDR.

I'm not sure about floral images. I just edit those like I would any other image. I love pretty texture overlays, but rarely use them.

6/14/2014 5:49:09 PM

6/9..Landscape..The Rain! It's Insane!

I still use Photoshop 7.. And some filter programs, such as Topaz. Can't afford a Photoshop upgrade and am used to having to put out a little more effort to get what I want, so I'll probably be using what I have for the duration.

6/14/2014 5:52:41 PM

Thanks so much Ken, Carolyn and Sharon. I look forward to hearing more.

True Blue

These brilliant blue little flowers are called Blue Daze, scientific name Evolvulus glomeratus.
They are of the Convolvulaceae, or morning glory family, so they are open early in the day and close up at night.
These little beauties live on my patio, and are quite tolerant of our very hot summers.
Minor adjustments in CS PP, and a bit of texture from Kim Klassen.
Yay! Another EP showed up ... batting .500 now! :)

6/20/2014 2:53:39 PM

This month has been an exercise in futility. Guess I'll crawl back in my hole again. It's pointless to enter when so many aren't even making the first round. As for May, I picked up one in the 2nd pass. 13 entries, 4 EP total. I give it to those of you who hang in there. I just don't see the point.

6/21/2014 5:38:00 AM

Only one for me way back on June 4, although starting this month I decided to give up on trying to post every day and have only 8 entries so far. May isn't much better, with just 8 EPs out of 31 after what appears to be a second pass.

6/21/2014 8:37:43 AM

Monnie, Sharon, Beth, Mitch, I hear you! I almost feel like not even bothering to post anymore...It is just so disappointing each morning to look and not see any EPs...I even wrote to Jim and asked what I was doing wrong...His reply that the Flowers category had so many entries that they were looking for truly unique images, really doesn't mean much when you look at the ones that have gotten EPs...Of course there are some stunning ones, but I see so many that are nothing special...I have given up trying to figure out how they choose. :-(

6/21/2014 11:10:23 AM

Jill, my sentiments exactly. I'm a couple weeks away from pulling down all my non-EP images, then I'll stop competing.

6/21/2014 11:50:28 AM

Jill, I also agree with you; 100%. :/

6/21/2014 12:26:29 PM

This is a replay of what happened about this time last year. It ended up with our posts being deleted if they were negative. Thing is, in may I had 80% EP's but in June so far, I only have three. I have almost given up on flowers and the new categories have me confused. I feel that I have not entered photos in the correct place and this may have affected the outcome. The winners are outstanding for sure but I feel that some of my photos are good enough for EP at least and they have been skipped this month. It is frustrating. I will keep plugging away and hope for the best.

6/21/2014 1:10:01 PM

What it will boil down to is are you having fun? If it's fun to just share your photos without any expectations then it's still worthwhile. I like to win occasionally though ;). I can't even remember my last win. BTW, no one should get all bummed because something is passed over. While that is disappointing I can say some of my best sellers with microstock the judges have just completely ignored, AND you're in good company :). Several have mentioned all the great photos passed over.

6/21/2014 1:12:42 PM

  6/13..Landscape..A Glorious End to January

6/21/2014 6:36:09 PM

I wonder if the powers that be are tired of reading all our complaints? That thought just popped into my head. Another thought I had was that maybe there could be a way for these contests to be anonymous. I don't know if it's possible but it would be interesting to see if that made a difference.

6/22/2014 9:47:50 AM

Beth, I will stop complaining now :). I'm going to try and finish out the month then after that I'll wait to enter again when things return to normal. A few years ago the EPs got scarce then it picked up again. I'm patient, I can wait.

6/22/2014 4:19:45 PM

While you are waiting Sharon, please don't hold your breath, we don't want to lose you! :-)

6/22/2014 4:50:54 PM

Sharon, I think they're done with the first pass through. For the last few months, BP has gone thru them again, prior to Staff Favs being handed out and most folks have picked up a few more. Hopefully tthis 2nd look is now part of their contest selection process.

Harriet, for the last three or four months, BP has gone thru all contest entries a 2nd time...part of their new contest process. I know some folks that pick-up five or 6 new EPs. So, don't delete any more! :-) Usually, the 2nd pass-through is closer to when they hand out Staff Favs. Based on Mitch's update, maybe they're doing them earlier for June's contest.

7/10/2014 8:10:12 PM

I picked one up, too. June 4. I never delete until after Staff Favorites are announced. I may undisplay, but I do not delete. You never know.

HI all. When are staff favs picked? This is new to me since I"ve returned. Thanks!

I have 4 EP's this month.

It's been pretty close to the end of the month, Lorri. It comes right before finalists. Don't delete anything that didn't get an EP until the SFs are out. They go back through them a second time before SFs, so you might pick up more.

  25 .  Can you help?
I have two pictures entered in a calendar photo contest. The winner is chosen by votes on the sponsor's Facebook page. I would really appreciate each and every vote, as the winning prize money would be donated to a charity. If you would like to vote, go to My pictures are a windmill and a swing on tree in autumn. Thanks so much, if you can help!

26 .  Black Reflective Glass or Plastic
I would like to do some tabletop photography using black reflective glass. I cannot find it anywhere. Does anyone have any idea where it can be bought? The strategy was highlighted in a publication some time ago and I have been searching since then. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You could try some black tile board from Home Depot or similar place. Should be in the bathroom section or try online.
Also, sometimes what is used isn't black glass or a black object, but what is actually clear glass or plexiglass that is laid over the top of black velvet.

My memory is shot a bit, but I'm pretty sure what I bought years ago was Acrylic Plexiglas at a local art store. It was available in Black/White plus a variety of colors.

Flower placed on CLEAN mirror with ironed black backdrop reflection.
A mirror laying on its' back with a smooth black cloth hanging perpendicular will give you decent results depending on what you're trying to achieve.

  28 .  Staff Favorites
Its not a question rather a request to Team BP to provide a link for all Staff Favorites for a month similar to the link of Finalists and Winners that BP provides in its email announcement.

It will just make it easier to look at all the SFs at one place.

30 .  Countdown to April Contest Results
It’s May 15th; where does the time go? Please share your favorite contest image(s) from April. Within the next 10 days, we should see the Staff Favs. Based on the April EP thread, BP is making their second pass-thru for EP selection. Hopefully everyone picks up a few more.

It would be great to see more BP members participate in this forum thread. We’ve only had about 10 people contribute “fav” photos for the last few months. If you’ve never participated in this forum, or rarely, I encourage you to join us this month.

So give your favorites a showcase here, tell us why you picked them, and join us in the countdown! Good luck everyone!

Some helpful hints for attaching photos into a BP Forum Thread, if you're unfamiliar with the process:

1) Sign into BP. IF YOU HAVEN'T entered the Contest for today, you can use the "Photo ID" method to pull an existing image (from your Member Center) into your Reply here. This avoids a duplicate image upload to your Member Center. Note the Photo ID# of the image you wish to include here (visible in your Member Center) then return to this thread, click Respond, enter the text of your reply, and choose "1" from the images-to-attach drop-down (even though you won't actually be uploading a file.) Click Submit; at the next screen, populate the "Photo ID" field shown over at the right. Skip the other text fields on that screen, check the boxes at the bottom, and Submit.

2) IF YOU HAVE ALREADY entered the Contest for today, you can't use the Photo ID method *today*. Either wait until tomorrow to reply here first, or upload a copy of the image (from your PC) and attach to this thread. This produces a duplicate image in your Member Center; however, you don't have to make that duplicate visible in your Gallery.

If you're uploading a duplicate, I suggest titling it "For Forum" so it stands out in your Member Center, for easier housecleaning later on. This can also help nudge BP viewers to go find the original image in your gallery, if they want to leave a comment. Likewise, if you want to add a comment to a photo seen here, first try to tell if it is a duplicate upload. As a courtesy, try to find the original image in the member's gallery and leave your comment there instead of on the duplicate... which may one day be deleted.

Jill, you gotta love Nubble. It's a picturesque locale, as your photo has conveyed. And the tomatoes look very juicy; full frame works great!

Joannie, this forum is for your fav "contest photo", not favorite EP photo. And they're still going thru EPs, so it might still make it to the next round. So, share away! :-)

Peggy, good motto for the resubmits. Different EP picker, different category; both come into play. Your pink rose photo is beautiful and fills up the frame. Good luck this time around!

Paul, lucky you to live so close to this natural phenomena. Your hike was worth it. I read about some ice caves in Lake Michigan that were much more accessible to the public this winter, because of the frozen lake. And the Ace photo..I'm with Carolyn. I sure hope it gets an EP the 2nd go around. Very creative and well executed.

Joannie, thanks for sharing. What a special photo of the great grandkids. This is what photography should be about; capturing special times that can live on forever, even if it doesn't get a shiny EP.

Usman, I remember the mosque from last month, and still surprised it hasn't gotten an EP. Your symmetry is perfect. I'd keep resubmitting. And it's a whole new world at the macro level, for the ants. I remember a photo assignment from years ago; the instructor placed four pegs in the grass that bounded an area about 2 square feet, and told folks they had to find compositions within the box. It forced people to rethink how to shoot photos when confined within such a small area. But over time, people came up with a myriad of compositions.

Nikki, good idea to share two photos. And I like the ivy (?) vines thru your comp. Gives it character. And the hunter/dogs photo is a super portrait. You were at the right place, right time.

From Jill's comment today on the April EP forum, BP says they have many more EPs to post (presumably from April 7th to end of month). So, be patient and hopefully you'll get a few more during the 2nd pass-thru.

  Genius of Tile
Genius of Tile
A marvelous, tight diameter, self-supporting spiral stairway rising more than 10 stories and created entirely out of Guastavino tile, without a central support column. Typically, access spirals like this, inside a cathedral's walls and turrets, would be stacked stone steps, resulting in a "column" running right up the middle. This view is up the central void resulting from Guastavino's ingenious design. Guastavino tile installations are most often domes and vaults, but sometimes complex stairways were done. (Engineers at MIT today are still trying to unravel the secrets of Guastavino's proprietary systems; the company dissolved in the early 1960's.) When the tile is not plastered over, the installations feature a distinctive herringbone pattern, often with ribbed, unglazed tiles and protruding mortar seams. This stairway, from the early 1900's, is tucked away in the cavernous Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine, New York City.
Details from an oak panel forming a side wall of the great choir at the cathedral. Each pointed arch features a quatrefoil with a different flower or leaf pattern carved at the center.
You'd think I could settle on JUST ONE favorite, seeing as I only had 8 entries in April...! ;)
But it is really tough, because I have two very strong personal favs; one for a first-ever visit to something I've wanted to see for years (a specific spiral staircase) and the other for something very mundane I walk past many times a day while giving cathedral tours myself -- but I love the way it turned out.
Feels weird to claim 25% of my entries (ie, two entries!) as my "favorites" -- but here are my 2 favorites!

Chris, no worries on picking 25% of your entries as a fav! :-) Really like the spiral staircase and your tones for it...same for the Tracery photo. And often we should look up or down more often...or squat low and shoot up. And thanks for the update on the April EPs; I'll take a look at my late-April entries.

Eric, perhaps try again with your photo. But I cut/pasted the link and opened it up...very dramatic scene with the trees in the fog. And it could just as easily be during some light snow. Very cool comp!

Usman, here's the dates for Staff Favs for the last two months: Mar 26th and Apr 26th.

I think for each of those months, the 2nd pass thru for EPs had occurred about the same time frame as this month.

My guess for Staff Favs would be May 26th, Memorial Day (American Holiday). But who knows, maybe they'll post tomorrow in advance of the holiday.

Soooo, there's still time for folks to post your Favs. I'd like to see some new people participate in this forum. :-)

5/28/2014 11:59:13 AM

Sharing a Joke here just to kill the time waiting for the announcements:

A gentleman was lonely and decided life would be more fun with a pet friend. He went to the pet store and bought an unusual pet; a centipede that came in a little white box. He took the box and pet back home and the centipede settled in.

That night the fellow decided to take his new pet to the bar to have a drink. He asked the little furry creature, "Would you like to go to Frank's with me and have a beer?"

There was no answer from his new pet. This worried him a bit, but he waited a
few minutes and asked him again, "How about going to the bar and having a drink with me?"

Again, there was no answer from his new friend and pet. So he waited a few
more minutes while assessing the situation. He decided to ask him one more time, while putting his face up against the centipede's house, and shouting, "Hey, in there! Would you like to go to Frank's place and have a drink with me?!!"

A little voice came out of the box, "I heard you the first time! I'm putting my
darn shoes on!"
