  It's a hummingbird moth, Shirley. Won't hurt you! If you look closely at one, it's body looks so soft and silky.

Above is a site that has A LOT of insect photos and may help identify this 'critter', Shirley!!

Never heard nor seen a hummingbird moth...but it looks better than my cicada killer wasps!(LOL)<:))

  Yep, Hummingbird moth, and that thing coming out of it's mouth is what they dip deep in a flower and get "whatever they get"! lol Some long tongue or sipper, huh?
