Thank you all for your comments! If you are subscribed to Popular Photography, you'll see the color version on the cover of your November issue (and Second Place in Your Best Shot). I saw these trees today and there were no leaves at all, and the bark was dry, on the one on the right which has the most leaves in this photo. I think it has died.
