Well, as usual, I messed up the titling on this. Should have read "Cycledelic".

Hummmmmmm....I like and dislike this one Conrad. Did you change this to B&W??? What does the shot look like originally?

Yes, this was a conversion. With the D40, that's the only way I can get a B&W. I had posted the color version in the free contest. Had some reflected greens and browns in it. An attempt at an abstraction, which I look for pretty regularly absent a lot of new subject matter. Will try to send it to you as an attachment if I'm able.

Busy but also very interesting. Good job on pulling this composition out.

Thanks, William. Supposed to have a modern art feel. Maybe not that successful, but without experimenting, I don't learn.

I love the title you intended... would have come up with the same one myself for this Conrad!...This is a tad busy, but you do a wonderful job with metal! Hard to do. You can shoot in B&W on Nikon D40... just go to menu, (the first one after playback) then optimize image.

Well anything that has seems to be shiny or reflective looks great to me LOL. I like the abstract nature of this shot. (When I put my D40 into B&W mode it is B&W in the preview on the camera but imports in color, then I have to do a conversion, is this the same experience for you Joan & Conrad? Personally, I would rather convert from color but I was just wondering if you guys have experienced the same thing with the D40)

Had to double check... so took one in B&W mode, and pulled it up on my computer and it IS B&W ?? Don't know what the difference would be.......some setting perhaps, ... but just "snapped" and interesting subject... need to go back and revisit it LOL

Thanks, Christina and Joan. I know it's busy, but I guess there isn't supposed to be a particular subject there, just a design. Anyway, thanks for the info on the B&W! Didn't know I could take it in camera with the D40. Glad to find that out!

I like this Conrad, almost looks like liquid metal. Christina B, do you shoot in RAW? If you do, this is why it reverts back to colour, RAW is exactly how the camera sees the shot with no processing added in camera at all. The good thing with a RAW conversion is that you can always revert a B&W RAW file back to colour, but you cannot revert a B&W JPEG back to colour at all. In my opinion it is better to shoot RAW and convert yourself as you have much more freedom to do with it what you like, hope this helps. Great shot Conrad, I love it.

I shoot in RAW or Raw + Jpeg, in this case... and both are b&w Chris...??

Hi Joan, do you use a dedicated Nikon editing program? With the canon, if you use canons own software, it comes with the in camera settings on the program and does the RAW conversion automatically (so you get a B&W shot) but if like me you use an aftermarket program (cs3) this doesnt occur. I wonder if that is the case?

Yep, I shoot in RAW. But I would like the option to revert after the import instead of it reverting automatically. Is there a way to do this while still shooting RAW? (sorry for the bit of side discussion Conrad :)

Hi Christina, unless its because you use a Nikon dedicated RAW editor, I dont know why this occurs. If you do use a dedicated editor then there should be a setting somewhere that is converting the shot to make it as it would be had it been a JPEG. Canons own program does this and there is a drop down box from where you can choose the picture style that would be, had it been JPEG i.e mono. All I know is that if it was a RAW, and you loaded it into CS3 etc it would be a colour image, which as a RAW, is how it should be. Sorry I cant help more.

Hey, don't mind the side discussion, Christina. One of the reasons I'm on here is to learn more, and any info I get is great. And thanks for liking the shot, Chris.

That would be it then Chris, I use Nikon's raw editor, Capture NX... thanks for solving the mystery!

Thanks, Stan. I look for abstractions now and liked this one. It's not everyone's cup of tea though.
