Hi Jim,
Terrific photo! In fact, this is an excellent choice for the "Where in the World?" quiz for BetterPhoto's free PhotoFlash newsletter.
Kerry

Note to Everyone:
Have fun guessing where this fine photo was taken. We'll check back over the coming days to see how things are going. Meantime, keep the guesses coming!

Is a wonderful photo Jim...love the location of the castle and for me looks like a very real place, maybe Ireland?

Makes me think of Hogwarts, from the Harry Potter books. The one they used for the movies is in England, I think. My guess for this would be Scotland, but I don't have a suggestion for exact location.
Beautiful image!

Alright, let me give it a try. I am from Europe and we have a lot of these things all over the place... but I am guessing this one is in Luxembourg.

Let me know what I have won.... hahaha!

Very, very nice picture b-t-w.

Regards, Eric

Okay, I see someone already took a shot at Scotland, so I'm going to say Ireland! I don't have an exact location, because I've never actually been to Ireland. The picture is beautiful. I hope I'm close.

It's not anywhere in Britain or Ireland. My guess would be somewhere in Spain, don't be fooled by the snow!

I have no idea where it might be, but I love it. Both castles and snow are in my list of favorite things in the world, so this pulled me in very quickly.

Nice job!

From the design , age , snow and mountain location the best guess I can give is somewhere in Eastern Europe.

My first thought was Romania, so I'll guess that - I'm intrigued to hear the answer!

Marianne is correct except that San Marino is an independant republic state inside of Italy not Spain.

question: Is is a castle or a fortess, there is a little difference. What does Jim say about the location?

A few people got this location correct. It's San Leo in San Marino, Italy. This is a tiny country of 109 square miles within Italy, and I got there on a clear night where I took some great twilight shots. I awoke the next morning to the place covered in snow, and it was indeed magical. This was taken after I had just had a wonderful workshop in Venice during Carnival.

Answering Peggy's question. A fortress would only be used by the military to defend against attackers whereas a castle was in effect a self contained residence for a king, prince or the like. The castle would be garrisoned by military but also have families, servants etc living within its walls which is why in most castles castles are much larger than fortresses.

Thank you! It is impressive, I haven't had the time to look up San Leo or San Marine yet to check out the history.
