Peter,

I think this is a very intriguing image that needs a crop. The light is beautiful and mysterious, the rail is a wonderful design element and the edges of the risers with their highlights are like radiating beams.

As nice as the texture is on the left side, I don't think it balances out with the strong right side. With the dark upper left corner, the shaft of light is defined and almost provides balance, but not quite. Just for kicks, take a look at it with a crop that puts the left edge just to the left of the shadow of the last rail at the bottom of the photo. It's not quite square, but nearly.

Now you have basically half darkness, half light, with the curve relieving the symmetry perfectly. Also, the concrete floor is now an interesting negative space shape, and the point of the last step has nice tension with the left edge.

This is a great image and one that many people would not "see". I just think that one little change would make it a totally arresting image.

Nice work and I hope you don't mind my comments.

Tim

I like the unique angle of this shot. I agree with Tim when he said that many people would not see this shot. Great picture.

  Tim,

Thank you so much for your expert analysis and comments. Really appreciated. I tried what you suggested and found the result very good and quite different, although - if I may say so - somewhat more "conventional" than the original framing. I must admit that I wanted to break some rules here (again) and partly that's why I put the stairs on the right, leaving that empty space with the "beam" on the beautifully textured concrete floor on the left.

Carol, thanks for your comment, too.

Cheers,

Peter

Peter, there is nothing wrong with your picture that the use of your great imagination can't fix. Just add some life in the open area...a dog, old person, cat, etc, etc. There are several people whose work I follow and you one of them. THINK !

Good Luck,
Chuck
