Although the contents of the picture are beautiful and peaceful looking, it is so hard to focus on. It is just too blurry and I'm not sure why you would post this photograph. However, I am a novice and am probably missing some important point to be made here. I have just joined the site and like what I see so far. I'm excited about the potential of learning more about photography and perhaps posting some of my own photos. Thanks
Donna

I would like to express to Donna what I see in this photograph. I see an excellent use of depth of field. The important aspect of this image is the lavender and shell path, which is the main focus. To me, this is an artistic shot and I find it pleasing to my eye. It has a comforting peaceful feel to it.

Just my opinion, and I'm not an expert either.

Thank you both for your comments.

Yes, most people think that blur is a bad thing. And it's true... it is terribly distracting when it is unintentional and does not help convey the main idea that you are trying to get across.

However, many times, blur (AKA selective focus or isolated depth of field) can be extremely helpful.

In this photo, I was most interested in "suggesting" a thought or feeling rather than "coming right out and saying it". If I kept the house in sharp focus, the viewer would naturally look closely at it. I did not want that. The house was not that beautiful for one thing. Mainly, though, I wanted the viewer to enjoy the lavender and the sense of line. I wanted to convey the peaceful, dreamy, summer day feeling of being there.

Thanks again. I appreciate you both taking the time to comment.
