I am SO glad to see this pic and to finally know for sure these birds are cormorants! I have a couple shots in my gallery of one of these guys at the lake at Tomlinson Park in Arvada. I thought that's what he was, but it seemed weird they were in Colorado! Then I discovered a whole flock of them along Clear Creek a couple weeks ago. Anyway, this is a wonderful capture..they're really interesting birds! They hold their wings out like that to dry off...they have no oils on their feathers like other waterfowl (I was informed of this in a comment on my pic..good to know! BUT, you probably already know that! You have a lot of knowledge about flora and fauna and looking at your gallery I've already learned alot about where I live!!)

Thank you, Joni! Yes, we have double-crested cormorants in the area, from early spring until late fall---depending on the weather. This photo was taken at the very East end of the lake at Crown Hill. Thanks again!
