Newman,

Question: there is a lot of white in this picture, the dress, hat, racket, background, etc. The hat produces a little 'shadow' on the face to make it even tougher: what was your thought process in setting up this photo to make sure the camera did not expose only on the white and darken everything else? Thanks,

This is a pretty old picture shot with chrome, so realize that this is a scanned image. Regardless, I shot it manually, exposing for the ambient light. (which I still do for the most part) This was taken during mid afternoon as I recall, but it was overcase which helped a lot. If it had been bright sun, the shadows would've been worse, and the white's blown out even more. In many cases dealing with uniforms, getting an overall ambient reading is key..then it doesn't matter what the subject is wearing. Hope this helps..
