Todd, I love this picture of sisters. The expressions on their faces and how their hair and eyes seem to pop off the black background.

Hi Mary! Thanks for your kind words! We were shooting more serious shots and the mom suggested that the one sister kiss the other one. I just loved the honesty of the expressions.

Hi Todd, I agree - such outstanding expressions, and I like the "story" behind the making of this fine image! Say, the lighting is excellent too ... what was the set-up that you used? Thanks, Todd!

Hi Kerry! Thanks for the compliment! The lighting is the same setup I use in all of my indoor portraits. I use a very large 6' Octagonal shaped softbox as a main light and a 6' silver collapsible reflector as the fill light. I try to get the softbox as close as possible and position it in front of the subject almost at 90 degrees. This allows the soft light to wrap around the face while still maintaining form for the features.

Hi Todd, Your photo is what I am striving to achieve in children's photography! Can you tell me how far in front of the black background you had the girls. My space is limited but I am ready to purchase new lighting and am thinking of trying to copy your set up since it obviously works beautifully! Can you tell us the brand of light box you prefer? Thanks for the help! Donna J

Hi Rich, I am sorry, I cannot send a pic of my setup, I sold my studio and only work on location now. Donna, the softbox I used is a Photoflex octodome, the 6' model, but be forewarned it is very big.. The subjects were about 4 feet from the background but because my light was not pointed at the background, I was able to get good falloff. Todd

Thanks Cynthia! I am glad you like the children photos, using the one light and reflector helps to keep a natural non-strobe look. Todd

I'd forgotten about this Todd, but so I have this right, 6'Octobox in front facing the subjects, just out of the way of the lens with diffuser in place & reflector to the side but very close, just out of frame right? Let's see: Subject Octobox Reflector Camera I hope this comes out right, so looking straight though from lens to subject. The lighting is so perfect that I want to get this. If this doesn't get it right would you mind emailing me or Commenting on my most recent blog entry so we can further detail this? Thanks Todd Rich
