Thanks Ron. This moth came fluttering into the kitchen one night and sat on the white tiles. I gently moved it to some african violets and it sat still for long enough to get some good shots.

Thanks for your comment, Mike. The identifiction of this moth was not easy. I scoured the internet and did'nt see any other images of it, except as a drawing on a South African commemorative envelope from 2002. It is mentioned in a lot of European scientific databases but never any pictures. Eventually I got feedback from the National Collection of Insects at the South African Agricultural Research Council. The moth belongs to the family Thyretidae and genus Automolis. It is probably Automolis lateritia lateritia Herrich-Schäffer. Quite a mouth-full. It seems to be uniquely South African. The ARC did not have any information on the food source of the moth, so I will be trying to do some caterpillar hunting in the field.

Since this is such a rarely photographed moth, you might want to send it around to some publications who may be interested in including in their magazines, etc. You never know!

Hi Irmgard, I just checked out your gallery and this picture really stood out. It is so unusual and you did a great job of capturing it. I agree. You should try to submit it to a magazine. It will be fun to see what you submit in the class. We were in South Africa a few years ago and really loved it. It has become one of my favorite trips. Carol
