Yes, timing IS everything. Ironically, it never rained on me, luckily as I had left the umbrella in the room having so much gear with me to photograph things. I just loved the way the light breaking through the clouds created such a contrast between the bldgs and the dark, ominous sky. Somewhere east of Florence, they got nailed with a violent storm that night!

Was this taken from your hotel room? Which lens were you using to capture this? I was never able to move in this close. Great shot!!! I love the lighting and the clouds. Really enjoyed Italy and would love to return when I can walk better and carry my EOS 20D, instead of point and shoots.

Thanks, Bunny - no, I wish it was a hotel room, but the hotel that is nearest this is too expensive for my budget! There's a little porch, a gap between the hotel and the restaurant/bar. It's the main road down south side of the river. Don't know the name of the hotel, though. I was walking around and the storm came up and gave me great, dramatic light to work with!

Thanks for responding. Which lens did you use? Also, did you use filters, such as GRAD filters or polarizers to add to the drama? My husband studied Italian in Florence last year and his house stay was near this bridge. I would have loved to go, just to photograph, but had to stay at home and do rehab. I love shooting in dramatic light with an approaching. I just cannot move quickly once the cobblestones get wet because they are treacherous!

I'm guessing it was my 24-105 or the 70-200mm lens, on a tripod. I don't recall using a polarizer, and no grads - the light was just as you see it - only even more dramatic than this jpeg on BP shows...I'd love to have studied Italian there! I'm working on it from my home in California - but not too many around me that speak Italian here.

Thanks, Brenda, for the information. No one speaks Italian here, but he found his background in learning Spanish helped. :-) Actually, I think the whole thing was to return to Italy alone and use the trip as an excuse for a valued educational experience. While I stay at home, go to rehab, purchase a badly needed new tripod, to take classes at BP, so that when I can walk better, I can travel with my SLR on a light weight, but sturdier tripod with a trustworthy tripod head. Thank you for your advice and sharing your work with the world.
