Obon in Miyazu

BetterPhoto.com Photo Contest Finalist   Obon in Miyazu
Obon in Miyazu
08/16/06, Miyazu, Japan. Spectators come from afar on the final evening of Miyazu's Obon Festival to watch the fireworks display over the bay, and the launching of hundreds of floating lanterns. It is said that on the days between the 13th and 16th, souls return to visit their homes and families on earth. On the 16th, when they are to return to heaven, lanterns are set out to guide them on their way back.

Thanks Janine and Cherylann! Cherylanne, as to the event working out... I will copy and paste here the story of what happened at this event, that I related in another photo's discussion thread...

Actually, the event was eventful in more ways than one. Briefly, when we arrived there was almost no place against the railing over the bay--people had staked out their places with mats well before. I found about five inches and apologized for squeezing in--and the family was very nice and eventually offered to share their space with me and a friend. Everything was set up--bulb, f8, tripod, remote release and was taking preliminary shots of other things. Then at the very moment the fireworks started, I looked closely at a disturbance behind me that I'd vaguely noticed out of the corner of my eye for some time, and was amazed to see the elder man of the family had collapsed and medics were there trying to revive him. I felt horrible that I hadn't noticed and was there cooly shooting while he was on the ground, not two meters from me unconscious. I abandonned my camera just as the first fireworks appeared. I got their phone number as the family left with the stretcher, but wasn't able to get through, so don't know what happened to him. Did get a few shots of the fireworks at the end and at least know that all that advice worked.

Oh no! It was great to capture the shots you did ... but that poor man and his family! I hope all goes well for them.

Thanks for the encouragement, Eric. I'm afraid mine aren't either anymore since I moved away from Miyazu!
