Fern Symphony IX

BetterPhoto.com Photo Contest Finalist   Fern Symphony IX
Fern Symphony IX
04/22/06 Donghu Park, Jiangmen, China. First ventures into manual focus. Have had issues with my first DSLR and glasses and, afraid to trust my eyes, always relied on automatic focus. But was so enchanted with a telephoto lens I was trying out for macro, and the effects it gave in focusing, I ventured off the beaten track--and from now on, it's manual focus for me!

Taking the chance paid off... I love this series of shots! They have a "sublime nature" kind of feel to them.

Thanks so much for all your kind and encouraging comments and sorry for being so late to thank you! Think that the comments people make provide great opportunity to visit others' galleries and usually wait until I have before responding--but this time it has taken me a while!

Susan, I was just cruising through your gallery and am amazed at the beautiful macros you are getting...including this. Can you tell me what kind of lens you primarilay use for these? And congratulations on "manual"...I've just gone to this with my 100 macro lens (canon)!

Hi! Thanks so much for the kind comment! Briefly, I didn't have a macro lens, it was just an 18-200 Sigma which I had borrowed and then bought myself last November. Most of my "macros" then are mostly magnified images which makes it more difficult to get enough pixel count to sell. In March I bought a 100-400 Canon L for birds and macro and it's all I use now. But I see that I really, really need a dedicated macro lens! I'll explain more in an email tomorrow night (and will have a look at your gallery!)--it's 3:00am here now and I'll be surprised if I've made any sense!

Just one extra comment--I recently bought the Canon D500 closeup attachment, and so a couple of my recent images are with that, and that's really macro! But the DOF is terrible!

Thanks for answering back, Susan(though why you would at 3 AM is beyond me!...it probably is again!!)...I want the 100-400 lens...I'm saving up for it..it's good to know you can get such lovely shots with it. Canon's 100mm macro is one of the first grown-up lenses I got when I got the 30D camera. The DOF can be a problem with the macro, and I'm afraid I'll have to invest in an appropriate flash to go with it to get enough light for the DOF neccessary. But you have beautiful stuff, anyway!!
