OK - its really a translucent plastic picnic plate, backlit for this shot. The hue was changed in PS to dark blue, and the teal glow added with lense flare filter. The thickness of the plastic causes the diffusion of the rings and the imbedded flecks to appear as 'stars'.

LOL-When I first saw this I seriously thought you took this in outer-space. LOL! I was amazed at first until I read what it really was. It's an awesome picture, and I bet you could fool a lot of people with it!!!

This has always been one of my favorites! It was an experiment that came out much better than I ever expected. Photography is so full of surprises. Thanks for sharing your reactions to this composition ... maybe I'll have to make up a story about taking digital photos from satellites ... LOL :)
