Thanks for the wonderful comments Dr. Silly, Larry and Linda. These Mexican Sunflowers (so I was told they were) have been attracting lots of butterfly varities at my Mom's house.

Placing the butterfly a little more left in the composition would make it even more interesting (rule of thirds). The depth of field is a little too short, having the entire butterfly in sharp focus would improve the image. The background color may not be the best. It seems to compete with the butterfly and flower. Experiment with other colors to see the differences and if there is a better color to showcase the main image.

Thank you for your comments!! I'm always so tickled with these little photo honors. Someone asked what the green background was...The green is actually the grass on the ground. This photo is pretty much exactly as it was shot. This posted version is truly not far off from the original shot. It was sharpened slightly and I may have adjust brightness/contrast. Anyone who has attempted butterflies knows the challenges they present. I was pretty happy with the overall shot...and I must agree with most of you, the colors draw do draw you in. There is a whole series of shots with these flower in my Deluxe Gallery at www.onceinalifetimephotography.com If you visit the Galleries and the 2005 New Additions for September you will find more butterflies and bees with these flowers Thanks Again!

Hi, Julie-- I also checked out your web site (great!)and the other recent butterfly shots. Your tete a tete bees are too cute...really made me smile...and so sharp. Super work! Congrats on your POD. I agree somewhat with Ed that you could crop the left a little, but the DOF looks fine to me. I just wish butterflies would hold still for us so their wing tips didn't get "clipped"! :-) Judy M.

What lens did you use? I'm a film person and usually use a macro but you have to be unusually close to capture these shots. I have a few shots but most are blurry in places.

Thank you all again for the additional comments. The only reason I didn't crop the image as suggested is because I was trying to maintain appropriate proportions for prints. I imagine for web display, I should have considred going through with the crop. Thanks for the suggestion. I am using a lens that I carried over from my Canon EOS Elan II. I just started shooting Digital in January and love it! The lens is a Tamron AF Aspherical XR 28-300mm. Most of these shots would have been done at 300mm.
