Lurking

BetterPhoto.com Photo Contest SECOND PLACE Winner

Lurking in Venice
Lurking in Venice
This is a photoshop creation from a photo of an alley I took in Venice earlier this month on vacation. I liked the simplicity of the alley, and used PS to create the dark effect. I also added a subtle motion blur/zoom effect to create the feeling of being drawn into toward the door at the end of the alley.

I am interested in receiving critiques and constructive criticism on my "Lurking" photo, which was creating using this photo. Specifically, I'm interested in perceptions of mood from the altered photo and how you "see" it.

Thanks in advance,
Chuck

Initially, I thought I was in someone's basement looking at a trap door with something menacing on the other side. Good job.

I think this is beautiful. Doors can be so compelling, and your moody effects leading up to the door are really effective. I would like to see a hint of the doorknob--I see it has a bit of a highlight in the original. I think it would "enhance" the viewers interaction with the image. Just a thought--I love it the way it is,too.

Thanks for the feedback. Gloria, I actually debated whether or not to bring the doorknob more into light, but decided that the very subtle hint visible now led to the uncertainty of the image. I paid careful attention to making the corners on either side of the door fade to black so that even though the eye visually recreates the corner, as hard as you look, you can't actually see what's there.

I would love to see this as a print, Chuck. I completely understand and agree with your treatment of the image--I think its just a little darker on my monitor, which prevented me from seeing the doorknob at all. Its a stunning image, and very effective in portraying what you describe in your comments.

The shadows and feel of the new warm photograph are almost ghostly. Brillant eye, because even the unedited photograph is beautiful!
