I don't usually take landscape shots, but I loved the patterns the ice was making on this pond. Any feedback is welcome! I'm trying to branch out a little.

Thanks!

Outstanding shot, Pam! The lone bare tree really makes the shot! Excellent composition on this!

Rather than comment just yet, I have a question. What time of day did you shoot this?

Thanks.

  Thank you, Dan and Paul!!!

Bob, this shot was taken around 5 pm, which was an hour before sunset. Looking forward to your comments.

I asked about the time because the angle of the light does not really show that the floating stuff is ice. Perhaps a different time (anything before 9 a.m. and after 3 p.m) would have helped illustrate that better.

You may also want to try slightly different crops, getting rid of either some of the sky and or some of the foreground material. Can't hurt, you can always go back to the original way.

If you can shoot something similar again, try getting lower, even at the water lever, so the tree is against the sky, not dirt. This may also help accentuate the ice you want to display more prominantly.

Good luck and keep shooting.

Thank you, Bob! I'll try to keep those things in mind... I'm used to shooting wildlife which tends to leave if you ask them to wait for better lighting...

I'll play with the cropping a little when I get home and see what I come up with. I was on a slight rise and the area right by the water was restricted (wildlife refuge) but I think I could have gotten a bit lower. I'll keep that in mind when I have another object on the horizon shot.

Thanks again!

As Bob suggested a different time could help.

The three is the most interesting part of this image to me, but from this angle is hard to make it stand. It blends with the background. So I think that a more interesting image can be achieved by zooming to those patterns of ice in the water surface.

If going for the details perhaps a different white balance might be needed.

Thank you Protacio! I'll try cropping it down some to focus more on the ice since I didn't get low enough to make the tree stand out. I think morning would have been better because of the sun angle, but also it was cloudy behind me, so the sun was covered.

I'm not sure that my camera actually has a white balance adjustment... Can I do something about this in Photoshop? I think I know all the functions on my camera and none of them are white balance. I'll check my manual when I get home, though.

I'm not sure about your model but the C-2100 Zoom has the following settings:

Manually adjustable white balance with five settings: Auto, Overcast, Daylight, Tungsten Light, and Fluorescent.

I'm not that good in Photoshop to suggest a procedure, but if a white subject where in the picture, levels cold be an option, but not the best one.

Hmm... I'll have to check that out.

I did change the contrast a little. I'll post the original when I get home...

Hi Pam! Maybe you could lighten up the photo some like this to bring in more detail; or retake the shot from another angle & time.

Thanks, Kip! I'll try lightening it up a bit... The problem is that ice doesn't stick around very long in New Mexico... If you see it, you really have to take the pic that day! The next day, I went to this same area and everything was melted...

I'll post some remakes of this shot in the morning... I'm going to try playing around with the ideas here... You guys have all been really helpful! Thank you!
