Matryoshka Dolls
Congratulations to Finalist and Winners. In this little village of Mandrogy they hand carve and paint Matryoshka Dolls (translated little matrons) also called Russian Nesting dolls. Today the dolls are produced much the same as by the original toymaker. Each hand-carved with the smallest first, then the artisen works his way up to successively bigger dolls. Another artisen paints the doll. The smallest fits into the next largest until all are inside the largest.

We purchased a set of these dolls in Mandrogy for each of my employees and these are for display in my office. I will later present the ones we got for our home. Contrary to popular belief, Russian nesting dolls are not a traditional form of folk art, are not pagan relics or even fully Russian although Russia has made these intricate dolls is own. Legend has it that the original Matryoshka were inspired by a doll brought from Honshu, Japan over a century and a half ago.

Excellent image. Even though these were made in Russia they do seem to have a Japaneese influence to them. Thanks for sharing.
