This is a fantastic shot. But I hope you see why studio shots usually use f/8-f/11 normally. The inch or two your baby is behind the daddy has put him a little soft. At the same time, I hope everyone else sees that with a little planning you can make amazing photos on a low budget.

This is such a cute shot Jennifer. You've done an excellent job with the lighting equipment you had on hand. The shot looks very professional.

Thank you all so much for your feedback :o) Josh, I am pretty new to photography in general...and definitely new to portrait photography in a controlled setting, hence me using garage lights...LOL I am also just learning to use my camera in manual mode. I really know nothing about the basics of studio photography even..LOL It seems when I used a smaller aperture, and slowed my shutter speed, I was getting so much blur because my boys do not sit still...LOL I used ISO 100...I am concerned that if I used ISO 200+ I would get noise in the background. Any pointers and/or corrections on my thinking is greatly appreciated! I did add a soft effect to this photo in PS, but I do see what you are saying about the sharpness of my husband compared to my son. I greatly appreciate your advice! Jenn P.S. Since I took these pics, I did add another set of garage lights to work with and was able to increase to f/4-5 or so. Still not close to f/8 or 11!

Well, you did well for being new to photography. It is a great captured moment with good use of the tools you have. With the Digital Rebel, you won't really see any noise problems till you get into ISO 800-1000. If you are going to use a low ISO and such low level lighting, you really need to get that camera on a tripod. But at 1/200th of a second you should be able to hand hold. It is really just the f/stop. And a F/3.5 would have taken your shutter to 1/100th which is fine hand held too and would have doubled your depth of field. But really..the DOF is the only think that could be improved on this pic. It is really an awesome capture.

I appreciate it Josh :o) Thank you for the info. I think I will look into learning more about when you can handhold a shot and at what f/stops. Thanks for taking the time to help me! I wont be so afraid now to increase the ISO now...LOL I have a fear of blur and noise!

The normal rule is that you should never handhold less than the focal length of the lens, but remember the 1.4 multipler of digital. So you should not handhold less than 1/85th of a second. And now that I have said that there will be lots of people who say they can hand hold much slower. blah blah... I hand hold down to 1/8th for film and 1/15th for digital. But I have LOTS and LOTS of practice at it. And that is for a normal lens, lightweight lens. I would never think to do that with my 4.5 lbs 80-200.
