WHOLE FOODS has these strange looking beets on display (and of course, for sale). On the outside, these vegetables look TERRIBLE. In fact one of the beets in this frame was SO UGLY that I couldn't leave it in the photo, and I replaced it (the one in the approximate middle on the far right--it has a dark top).

But look at the one that is cut in half...NATURE produces such things???

Ugly, yes. Alien things. Do you suppose we've just lost our connection to the "real" look of crops and know only the shiny, cleaned up variety in the supermarkets? My, John, a cheese and beet sandwich??? really????

Terrific capture, Michelle! I love beets! We have a traditional Polish soup made of them called red "barszcz". We have just had it few days ago with sort of ravioli filled with mushroom! :P
