Knowing its a spider is enough for me, Ms.V. Yikes, that's awfully close! What a fantastic macro of this critter and I love the dof you've used.

Ok, I now have the heebee geebees trying to find this spider, Val! The closest I can come is the Western Black Widow from: http://bugguide.net/node/view/97804. Your capture is beautiful, as usual, and your depth of field is perfect! I predict we will see this again! (I can't get it out of my head!)

I hate that Texas has such big spiders! :-) But you've made it look beautiful...really hope it's not a black widow!

Yikes, I think Kathy is right. It's a western black widow. Altho, I did research to discover the type of spider, all the black widow photos had a more bulbous body and no markings on top....thinking maybe this was a male or a juvenile. Glad I was wearing jeans when I tromped thru the field I found him in - happier still that I couldn't get as close as I wanted to! :) :)

Great little macro here! The markings can vary quite a bit on black widows- so maybe you are right in that it is a juvie! Anyway, keep it in Texas!

I was unhappily shocked to learn last summer that black widows come in a wide variety and not just the classical black shiny shelled ones with a heart on the belly. Different regions have different looks to their spiders! One thing I found in common while researching, however, is that they do not make pretty webs. They make complicated sticky messy ones that are not easy to break away from.

Thanks everyone - appreciate the stop by...and LOTW, thanks for your well-received info. Believe me - anytime I see red on a spider, I'm heading myself and my camera in the opposite direction! Love your animation!! Thanks so much!
