On Pearl Harbor Day

On Pearl Harbor Day
On Pearl Harbor Day

-----
For the third consecutive year, I attended the Pearl Harbor Day Memorial Ceremony aboard the Battleship New Jersey, yesterday, hosted by NJ First District Congressman Robert Andrews.
----
For the last two years, the weather has been inclement but the ceremony was held outdoors anyway. This year heavy rain was expected, so the event was conducted in a tent on the ship's rear deck--though the rain had stopped minutes before its start. Much of the poignancy was lost, I'm sorry to say.
-----
The New Jersey was launched on December 7, 1942, on the anniversary of the catastrophic attack at Pearl Harbor. She had a remarkable war record (earning 19 battle stars) through many wars, but was finally decommissioned in 1991. New Jersey is now a floating museum, moored on the Delaware River in Camden, cross river from Philadelphia.
----
This is the ship's fore deck.

Do you really go by Mickey sometimes? I didn't know that. There's something kind of overwhelming about the perspective here, the size of the chains in it for one. I can't imagine actually handling those or dealing with the reality of being on this ship as it carried out its mission.

Note: Weather conditions made this photo SEEM to be black and white at quick glance. This is truly a color photo, hardly "touched." -Michelle

  Thanks for that excellent information!

In my opinion though the weather has added a great deal of drama and mood to this scene and coupled with your excellent composition and capture, it looks like straight from a real war scene! Outstanding work and a fav.!!

These ships have always facinated me, Michelle. We had the good fortune to spend a little over an hour on the USS Missouri in Pearl Harbor and count it a real privilege! A great capture!
