The Johnson Street Bridge (aka Blue Bridge) is a bascule type bridge which spans the harbour of Victoria, BC.
This beloved icon was built by Joseph Strauss in 1924. He also built the Golden Gate Bridge.

In this image both the rail and the vehicle lanes are raised to allow a ship to pass underneath.

The JSB is being replaced with a new sleek & stylish bridge. I wish she didn't have to go but ocean air and water has corroded the structure and she needs to be replaced. The new bridge will be built to today's seismic standards which is necessary as we are located in one of the most active earthquake areas in Canada.

Since this photograph was taken, the rail portion (on the right) has been removed but the vehicle lane has remained open. It will operate throughout the construction of the new bridge which should be completed in March 1916.

I have many memories of this bridge but one thing that will always stand out is the sound vehicles make crossing the structure. Cars, buses and motorbikes crossing the steel grid decking create sounds, which resemble insect buzzing sounds. You can hear it and feel the vibration in your body as you're driving or walking across it.

The JSB will be sorely missed and the landscape of the city will be forever changed. I am one of many who have the Blue Bridge Blues.
